When I first started playing in local league, I had a problem scissoring on games of that era - and especially disliked Paragon . Then I came across a non-working one for $400 and brought it home to teach myself dead bouncing on a double flipper side and tap passing... I figured I'd play it three months and offload it. Years later, I'm signed up for the CPR playfield and it's one of my favorites. It taught me the above and so much more (patience, gameplanning and strategy, shot selection, technical board rework, etc).
