I think these expensive reports must be analogous to the reverse-engineering white papers some companies specialize in and charge similar (and much higher) prices. Presumably, the information contained is much more in-depth than can be readily assembled by a layperson, and is probably worth a lot more than $3k to its intended audience.

I'll do one for half that!
