I'm a 3D artist by trade and by hobby, and take a lot of inspiration from the other subjects i'm interested in. Having recently (in the last year) gotten pretty heavy into pinball, naturally that has rubbed off on my creative side quite a bit. I really love old rusty vintage neon signs, and decided to create a series of designs based on some of my favorite pinball machines. Attack From Mars, Monster Bash, and Medieval Madness are some of my go-tos, and happen to form a nice little trio for a project series.

I started in 2D, borrowing various assets from the machines and re-designing them to form an interesting sign. AFM was the first one I did and was really happy with the overall concept of the UFO rays forming the support beams of the sign. I admit I got a bit carried away with the other two, trying to incorporate way too much into the designs, but I'm still pretty happy with the range of styles.

After I had the 2D designs down, I started building them in 3D and adding all the grunge and texture you'd expect to see in old aging signs. I use 3D Studio Max, VRay, and Fusion for my work.

I like to leave a lot of the interpretation of my work up to the viewer. A vivid imagination is required to create any type of art, and I like to create images that will jog other people's imagination as well (haha I dunno maybe that's the definition of art). To me these kind of feel like signs you'd find outside the entrance to a roller-coaster or something, but i'm curious what comes to mind when other people see them!

Make sure to view these in their fullest resolution if you can, as they're quite large. If you'd rather browse the images on my website rather than the links below, you can see them here: http://www.toddkumpf.com/#/imagined-neon/

    I'll take one Marsburger please.

Oh and as a bonus, before I created the pinball signs I did this N64 one as a texturing test!

Will you design a sign for me when I open my drive in restaurant?

    #6 9 years ago

Wow! Those are pretty incredible. Now if they could be translated into actual neon signs and used as pinball machine toppers, that'd be pretty sweet. Especially if the MM one would actually breathe fire!

I was confused by this but your files are kick ass!

Holy crap that Attack from Mars one from the side angle looks nearly photorealistic.

Great work! Very cool. Afm is my favorite.

    mini toppers with led strips

Thanks guys! Neon toppers are a great idea.

Good point, I agree it was oddly worded. I edited it slightly so at least people don't think i'm ripping apart pinball machines to build neon signs (although that does sound pretty neat too, to be honest. If you're going to hang an old playfield on a wall, creating a neon sign out of it would be a pretty rad way to do it. I wonder if anybody has done that.)

These are great. To me these look like casino/hotel signs from a not to distant post-apocalyptic Nevada city. Like something found in front of a themed resort in a desolate Reno from the future. They could be put into a game like duke nukem 3d and totally fit in with the feel of the world. Kinda just ahead of where we are; but paying homage to a time of long ago. Very good stuff

I'd love to see one as a full sized poster print with accent lights or el wire imbedded in the print. (Like the pictures of a car garage and all the cars tail lights, light up)

I'd offer to buy one, but I'm sure the licence holder would want a cut before these ever get made.

Very good work, I'd like to see more.

Fantastic work! Can you do nighttime versions of them?

It's one of those things it makes perfect sense as soon as you see it. The idea itself is so off the wall it wouldn't be easy to explain no matter what.

those would also make awesome wallpapers on my PC

    #16 9 years ago

Really impressive and awesome! To me it's got that post-apocalyptic vibe too!

    #17 9 years ago

    Very nicely done!

I'm amazed of the talent people have. Your signs are the coolest!!!

    #21 9 years ago

Friggin' awesome. Takes a creative mind to do that. How long did they take?

    #22 9 years ago

Amazing talent. I can't even draw a stick figure.

    #23 9 years ago

    Very cool

Can believe this hasn't been said...
Shut up and take my money!

    #25 9 years ago

Awesome! I'd love to see you do one for Creature, it already has the classic drive-in/neon sign vibe to it.

    #26 9 years ago

I don't know about toppers, and the dimensions would limit the size due to average ceiling restrictions, but they would make great bar/shelf/whatever displays. I'd buy them for that.

    #27 9 years ago

Excellent work! One of your signs should be your avatar.

WOW!!! You really know your programs well to be able to do this. In the future I could see you having big fine art prints done of these and having a showing at an art gallery with the actual games by each print. I LOVE your artistic eye and vision and look forward to seeing all you create so DON'T STOP. I can see your work the size of Wendover Will, wow would that be great.
