Friend of mine has a 8 ball just sitting and not working. Went over to see it and after fiddling a bit and a few fuses later she was running but the poor girl was worn out. Right flipper plunger was melted into the coil sleeve, plastics shattered everywhere, bulbs shattered due to missing plastic, rubbers worn out, and the play field missing a fair chunk of art.

The boards look good and the game does still play. The battery has not caused and board damage at all.

All the back glass glass is perfect and is still looking sharp even though it’s not in the first pictures.

Took on the project with the idea to clean everything, replace what was only busted, fill in the missing play field art and re-clear.

Today was go time. Started by looking over the underside of the play field. Som very interesting things here. Solder conventions on coils were very bad and most only had a few wire strand holding them on. Securement bolts for items were missing on almost everything, and things were rattling everywhere.

Found a few re wired areas, and a few new wires of solid colour re ran thru the harness and just looped around random things.

Thanks for the offer. Im going to repaint the drops. I already did a order for new caps, skirts, posts, rubber, flipper rebuild kits and other stuff.

I am looking for a plastic kit.

I have a 6L sonic cleaner with a built in heater. Fill with water and use dish soap or just a little Spray Nine and clean for 15 min. Any electronic boards needing cleaned are cleaned in water and dish soap only then fully rinsed with rubbing alcohol.

Don's use simple green as i found it actually causes a haze on metal parts.

The spray 9 if used at full strength will actual remove paint it you let it sit overnight, so it actually makes a good thing to use if trying to refinish drops and other plastic you plan to repaint.

And off we go ! Time to start cleaning.

This go around will not be like the Sinbad or Lectronamo. Trying to keep the cost and time down.

Removed the old pop Mylar with the “ I’m walking on sunshine” method and moved on to removing the left over adhesive. Bit of a flour malfunction in the process.

Found a few areas of concern. Wood filler was used prior and it was dust. These spots and others like it will get epoxy tomorrow.

After that moved on to trying to get that old cracked clear taken care of. It was bad in areas. I used some old 400 wet paper because I really needed it to be 573 grit. A simple check with the grit-o-meter and it was spot on. Gentle long strokes and constant checking ensured I never went too deep , I also did some sanding.

As you can see it went from cracked to a good even surface. Never even hit the colour layer once. Before and after pics.

The inserts need some love. Don’t want to try to re-clear over a old cracked surface that might be holding contaminated debris that will show thru later.

All inserts are hurting. Another set fixed up. All seem to be also to have hairline fractures all the way thru. No replacement this time but I’m thinking a cool dusting of translucent pigments over them will hide it all.

Shook the dust off and argued with myself on what direction to go with the colours.

Decided I would just use the opaque blue as is and not mixed to match the old blue. It’s a bit darker but after painting all the blue it will be the same all over the board. I started painting the left side blue areas as a test.

The whites on the field are yellowed something awful. I mixed up a custom ivory like a real cue ball. I will also use this colour on all the balls now.

Areas of the field are completely missing as seen in the pics. My little trick for filling in the blanks seems to work just fine. First you need to doctor up a image of the area needing repairs, then print it out to scale.

Next is to lay down some masking tape, lay the image and line it up. Next you need a material that transfers ink easily....... you guessed it! the Saturday Paper! The house for sale section is perfect as its loaded with ink. Place the ink side down and trace your top paper with a ball point pen. Lift up after and be amazed at your ability to do something that kids in kindergarten do!
