My 70 Srike Zone is a great machine; the only real cosmetic issue is the the lower play field apron. I took it to a graphic artist that does vinyl transfer images, he says one week, and will replicate the graphics. I’m also doing the plunger gauge, figured what the hell, he has both pieces to get measurements, might as well get them all looking good.

I am supposed to get the first mock ups Friday (7/29). The only change will be the “Williams” and “Flipper” fonts will be red.

Is this the way to do it ? Or did I just screw up ?

Here’s a before: (after will be next week)

Following your pics, I wonder how this will come out. Great idea, not really permanent. I just wonder when you remove it if all the original paint will come off with it.

That apron is in sorry shape. The original art was screenprinted onto these aprons, but vinyl decals should make a nice substitute. You will want to strip the old paint with a citrus-based stripper, sand away the rust, and repaint the baby-blue base color.

Thats exactly what I'm going to do, my friend of a friend runs a bodyshop, they will bead blast it and paint it baby blue (sorry they call it robin egg blue lol). I couldn't really think of any other way to replicate the graphics, no way I could do it myself, and I didnt want just a repainted solid color apron.

Strike Zone doesn't get a lot of love, so when I get in pinball fixing mode I tend to address everything. I figure anything will be better than what I had, the paint on the apron was flaking bad and would end up on the playfield, I'm in the middle of a 10 year service (clean and wax playfield, new rubbers, new ball, new bulbs, and fixing some other issues), I will keep you all posted as how it turns out.

Strike Zone doesn't get a lot of love,

It has that Mustard colour on the cabinet and that doesn't help. But it can be frustrating to play. It has that I almost had it, I'll push that dam button again!
It does that animated backglass, that lights each pin as they are rolled over, which is different. That Down Post Button just above the post is maddening as well.

Don't let PPS know you're doing this, LOL.

He can do it as long as it is to his own game. Now if he were to try to sell additional copies of his vinyl that would be a different story.

He can, but Rick seems to think anything Williams is his and his alone. But on this issue, what you say is correct.

Ha, yeah the cabinet color ain’t purdy, but I actually enjoy playing it, and you’re right, the Down Post will really catch you off guard. It has enough strategic game play to keep my friends and I engaged, but not so much to over welm newbies. It’s a great “beer and a buck” pinball.

I’m guessing someone has already done this ? I searched and searched and couldn’t find anything, figured this would be a easy fix to make the machine a little nicer. I definitely don’t want to step on anyone’s toes, and yes it’s just for my machine.

Pinball Rescue used to make apron decals for WMS games, but they had a falling out with Planetary Pinball, the rights-holder.

Just got the mock up pics emailed to me and they look fantastic ! I really think they came out nice, I’m glad I changed the pink fonts to red, it matches all the red on the play field and back glass. The photos are screen grabs so the resolution isn’t the best, they blocked me from downloading the full res mock up pics, I guess they don’t want me to start printing them off myself.

The wrap is done; I got the apron back from my art guy; I stripped and primed it, and will paint it tomorrow. I think I got a good color match, though the wrap will cover almost everything that shows. I also cleaned up the #6 1-3/4 screws.
