How is it? I'd like to get a Barrel Strength Bourbon from Michter's at some point. Tried their Toasted a Barrel Rye and was not impressed

I'm not a rye guy but this ranks right up there with theThomas Handy sample you sent me. Nxt time I send you up some samples i'll include this one and I promise you'll be impressed.

I have seen it a lot on the shelf but hadn’t heard a trusted viewpoint on it.

It isn't horrible just not great either. To me it's just one of those glasses if someone put it in front of me I would drink it but definitely not go looking for it

I think he is running around somewhere licking door knobs

    #455 2 years ago
    Quoted from kcZ:

That is one messed up family that you have, Christmas dinner aught to be a riot. Did your uncle ever get another Pinball machine or is he still rocking that one crappy game? You should really hook him up, I feel bad for the guy.

I thought for sure santa was going to hook him up but I guess he was a bad boy this year. I'm sure you have something laying around that you could hook him up with.
Maybe a store pick of cask strength Old Crow or something would be a nice gift.

    #457 2 years ago
    Quoted from kcZ:

Last time I talked to your Uncle he tried selling me one of those old paint cabinets, said my bourbon should go in there and to ignore the smell of paint. Seemed a bit off his rocker

Well he was a bit off his rocker and was getting a divorce at the time and losing his auto body shop. You sure know how to beat a guy up while he is down he was trying to hook you up. That old cabinet would have looked sweet in your gameroom!

    #482 2 years ago
    Quoted from Blackbeard:

Can i ask why? They all seem to taste kinda the same to me.

You have corn based bourbon, wheat bourbon and ryes. You also have different char levels in the barrels which impart different taste profiles also. The Beam products to me tend to be more oaky and tannin tasting. The Buffalo Trace products tend to be far less oaky and more floral based profile. The Old Forester products are somewhat oaky and full bodied and tend to be more brown sugar/carmel tasting.

    #485 2 years ago
    Quoted from Blackbeard:

    Thanks fellas
And i'm definitely guilty of using ice.
    Noted.

Careful Captain kcZ is the head of the anti-ice squad and will issue you tickets for using ice. I think he had some bad experience once with it or something

Hey Aaron looking forward to getting your thoughts on the Coopers Craft. IMO it is some really good juice for $38.

    #573 2 years ago
    Quoted from kcZ:

I thought that I grabbed my bottles in FL for half that price

If you found it for $19 you shoulda bought every bottle they had. Cheapest price i've seen on it was $35, now the lower proof one is cheaper.

Anyone else get this magazine sent to them in the mail yesterday? Apparently the Garden and Gun club is a club in the Stizer Weller distillery in Louisville, Ky. I guess they are trying to solicit people to come take tours and buy their products. Only thing I know they make is that Blade and Bow and i'm no fan of that one but apparently they do have a 22yr old version I would sure like to try.

I think it’s pretty good. My brother in law brought a bottle over one time. I’m all about a good lower priced bourbon. For instance Early Times BIB….. delicious and $25 here in Ohio

Early Times BIB is so good for what it is and the price point. Plus it comes in a 1 liter bottle.

Ice in the coke or coke in the whiskey? Come on Scott you were to vague with that one

    [quoted image]

Come on Scott your dealing with pro's here we see that bottle is sealed up with the plastic. This isn't amateur hour here pal we are seasoned vets

    #773 2 years ago

I think it's awful also and really has nothing to do with proof. Has everything to do with an overwhelming attempt to hide a subpar bourbon in super heavily charred barrel. Age statement is 5yrs but drinks more like a 2-3 yr old young bourbon. Hard to get over the heavy oakiness and lingering tannins that overpower it. There are far better Bourbons on the market that can be had at a much older aging as well that are far less than $180 a bottle. It seems to me that if you're from Texas you are taught that this is the greatest thing since sliced bread unfortunately once you cross that border that same idea does not carry over for the rest of us. If that juice is your thing and you enjoy drinking it then by all means drink it. I will say again though for $180 a bottle the payoff just doesn't seem to fit the bill.

    #785 2 years ago
    Quoted from Green-Machine:

Could you explain the taste of tannins in bourbon? There is a taste I get in some bourbons that is a real turn off for me. I always describe it as pukey. It has a taste that reminds me of stomach acid or a sour taste maybe.

I consider heavy tannins to give a real overwhelming oakiness that takes over the whole profile. This leads to a bitterness and almost dry mouthfeel. A lot of Beam products are this way too me which is why I don't own many.

    #787 2 years ago
    Quoted from SirScott:

I see what you did there.

One that comes immediately to mind that has a taste profile I can't stand is Wilderness Trail. Whatever it is that's in that mashbill is in other bottles also that I can't drink.

    #804 2 years ago
    Quoted from kcZ:

Prof Bourbon threatened to flunk me from Bourbon 101 since I did not post a review last night...
Well, I hate to admit this cause I tell everyone to grab a Yellowstone store pick anytime they find one but these bottles are falling out of favor for me. The bottle in the back ground was a store pick that I picked up a couple years ago and was outstanding but these two here are just "Meh". These two tasted very similar and were barreled about a month apart. Too much rye notes for me in these two.

Hmmm... I picked up another bottle yesterday from Binny's. Looks like i'll be doing a nice 2 o'clock tasting today and see if I come to the same conclusion as you.

    #807 2 years ago

Ok so here we go. Well they are both 115 proof and barreled 3 months apart. 1st pick is from a great store in central illinois and 2nd bottle is from Binnys in Springfield Illinois.

Nice to see a working clock there for you.

I had to display it after all you did send me your favorite clock that must have been very difficult to part with

    #813 2 years ago

Ok so the 1st bottle pour was just splendid it hit all the right notes for me. Nice controlled burn not overpowering the bourbon at all allowing it to speak clearly. A nice subdued oakiness that doesn't overpower it goes along nice and smooth. The taste is really nice with some raisins and a carmel apple nuttiness and something else I can't quite pick out. This pick is very good and I wish I had bought about 10 more bottles.
Moving on to the Binny's pick now the nose doesn't seem to be as fragrant as the other bottle. 1st noticeable thing is there is less burn on this bottle than the last which is strange. There is a completely different profile on this one definitely more oaky and leathery. This one is more oily than the last and has more of a almost earthy flavor almost tobacco leaf taste (yes I actually know that taste I used to harvest tobacco on my brother in laws family farm). This 2nd bottle really reminds me a lot of Bookers Country Ham. You cannot go wrong with either of these 2 picks but I definitely prefer the more floral/fruit profile of pick 1.

I'm working on a Buddies Puck bowler and it's all kinds of jacked up. I wasn't planning on having any drinks today but that all went out the window a few minutes ago

    Quoted from jgentry:

Fresh crack. Typically I find all the Turkey special releases pretty underwhelming but this one is unique and pretty tasty. The front is fairly typical turkey but with enough rye blended in to kill most of the earthyness, mid is disappointing with not much character, monster finish out of knowhere.
    [quoted image]

Not sure where in TN you are scoring those bottles unless you are a store owner or know one. I just got back from pigeon forge and then a few days in Johnson city and I never saw anything worth buying. Seems as though all they want to push is Tn moonshine or small Tn distillery products.

    Quoted from jgentry:

Won this one in a local raffle. It's the 2022 release. It's not any better then the previous ones and maybe worse imo. Not a bad pour but not at all worth chasing or paying over retail for. Rare breed and the RR SiB's blow this one away. WT just cant figure special releases out. Imagine RR SiB with all of the earthy tones overpowered by oak with more oak. It doesn't even fit the RR flavor profile.

    one.
This to me was the most overhyped bottle of 2022 and I found it to be awful. Tasted like burnt shoe leather

Had to run down to wichita so I did a little shopping. Apparently special reserve Weller is no problem for them to get but they don't get anything else. Luckily for me I'm a big fan of the special reserve so this will fill up my stockpile for a little while.

Anyone have an idea of the age of this bottle?

Looks early '70s to me but it could be late 60s also

Hey Green-Machine sorry bout that butt dial the other day. I was teaching a class and had phone in my pocket no idea how it picked you to call. On another note I got a call from a liquor store manager they did a barrel pick and I went over to grab it.

Football pours. 2022 Burthday bourbon. I was drawn for the old Forrester's raffle last year. No luck in 2023. Great full flavored bottle, really appreciate the mid proof. Seems like everything is a flame thrower these days.
    [quoted image]

I've put in for their raffle the last couple years and have never been called.

    Quoted from meSz:

One of my favorites is the Blanton’s Straight From the Barrel but I refuse to pay secondary price for it. My daughter picks me up a bottle when she goes to France. A bottle hard to get and overpriced in the States is sold in France off the shelf and for MSRP.
    [quoted image]

Never have tried that one. Nice score!

Thankfully my family came into town for Christmas on a resupply mission. Green label is my absolute go-to to get started so I have to keep it well stocked.
