Pinball and bourbon go hand in hand

    Quoted from DBLM:

Very nice collection. I notice most of them are sealed. Which of those do you drink on the reg? Old Carter is a pretty regular drinker for me.

I only let myself have 40 bottles open at a time. So I have to finish one to get to open another one.

EHT SB or SiB is pretty much always in the decanter
Other favorites that are open right now are EHTBP batch 6, Lux Row 12y Double barrel, BBCo triple stave, KC12 120proof, and 2022 Handy.

Old Carter varies greatly depending on the batch but all that I've had are good.

    #1200 1 year ago
    Quoted from DBLM:

Nice. Old Carter in my opinion is one of the best you can get. It has ranged from great to beyond. Candidly, I have it ranked their American Whiskey, then their rye, then their bourbon. American Whiskey Batch 5 is in my opinion, one of the top 3 pours I have ever had. Granted, I am not a fan of any of the BT products (too florally for my palate), but I would put it up wi5 any of the allocated tater bottles. I would say Heaven Hill 17 is maybe a notch above. If you have one of those, crack it open. I think I have a few more bottles on my boat. Will have to crack those open when I cut open the shrink wrap in another week or two. [quoted image]

Very little distribution to TN for any of their bottles. I still have family in central KY that have grabbed me a couple of bottles and I got the TN 2022 batch. The TN batch is a bit disappointing but the other few I've tasted are very good. It's as allocated as anything in these parts though. Pretty hard to come by.

    #1212 1 year ago
    Quoted from DBLM:

The DC area is one of their main distribution areas. People are catching on to Old Carter but fortunately, I can get it fairly easily at MSRP. Sadly, MSRP has gone up.

Yeah, don't see them for much under $230 now. Bourbonflation.

OGD114 here. Can’t beat it for the price.

Heard a price increase is coming with the possibility of that one going allocated. I bought 6 bottles the other day to stock up a little as it's my main old fashioned base. Great stuff, getting harder to find though.

Fresh crack. Typically I find all the Turkey special releases pretty underwhelming but this one is unique and pretty tasty. The front is fairly typical turkey but with enough rye blended in to kill most of the earthyness, mid is disappointing with not much character, monster finish out of knowhere.

    Quoted from PinDeLaPin:

Not sure where in TN you are scoring those bottles unless you are a store owner or know one. I just got back from pigeon forge and then a few days in Johnson city and I never saw anything worth buying. Seems as though all they want to push is Tn moonshine or small Tn distillery products.

Nashville has a great bourbon community. Lots of great barrel picks and events but allocated stuff is hard to come by. Most of my family is still in Central KY and I have family that work at HH and MM. I have family in Bardstown also and they are always kind and pick me up stuff. One of my cousins always goes to HH before visiting me and grabs whatever the opening release is. Probably 75% of my bottles are coming from family in KY. I have a great relationship with my local store owner also and always get some good stuff their as well. TN in general doesn't get great allocations though. Some of the TN products are really freaking good though and are completely overlooked nationally.

    #1233 1 year ago

This is already a very diversive bottle. Lots of bashing online. It has one of best noses I've experienced in a long time. The bourbon doesn't live up to the nose but vanilla is prominent with nice layers of flavor. It's is light, delicate, and extremely delicious. It is however pretty over priced. It will receive a ton of hate because everyone is proof crazy right now but I really like it. The finish leaves the most to be desired.

This one is such an absolute banger. Hits on every note for me. Near bourbon perfection.

    #1236 1 year ago
    Quoted from Green-Machine:

    Would love to try this!

Hit me up, we can trade some hand shakes. Some people dont like the mild licorice hints in this one but for me it's just about perfect.

    #1240 1 year ago
    Quoted from Green-Machine:

I haven’t had a Lux Row product I didn’t like. Licorice notes are encouraged in my pallet I’ll definitely get with you.

They are highly underrated imo. You can walk into the distillery most days and find one of their sought-after bottles sitting on the shelf with no lines. The 12y double barrel is better than this years Parker's Heritage and people are lined up every morning at Heaven Hill at 8:00 am hoping they drop some of it that day. I've walked in and came out with one of Blood Oath, Rebel 10y, Rebel 12y (the closest thing to stacking up with btac wlw on the market), and the double barrel 12y just about every trip. With them being bought out their prices have recently skyrocketed though which is disappointing. It's always funny to me to see the lines at HH and BT. 300 people waiting at opening to get an Eagle Rare, I just don't get it. At least at HH there is a chance at one of their premium products but they have raised prices so much it's like paying secondary already. Meanwhile you can walk into Lux, Beam, BBCo, MM and always find a good bottle without the hassle.

    #1243 1 year ago
    Quoted from woody76:

I grabbed one of these when I bought all that EHT last week. Little pricey, hope I like it.

I like mine a lot. Definitely overpriced but good bourbon.

    #1244 1 year ago

Picked this one up on a whim. The oak over powers everything. It's not terrible if you like really heavy wood (girlish giggle) but it's not my thing.

Now this one on the other hand is delicious. Nelson's is a Nashville distillery and they have been killing it. Love their products.

Won this one in a local raffle. It's the 2022 release. It's not any better then the previous ones and maybe worse imo. Not a bad pour but not at all worth chasing or paying over retail for. Rare breed and the RR SiB's blow this one away. WT just cant figure special releases out. Imagine RR SiB with all of the earthy tones overpowered by oak with more oak. It doesn't even fit the RR flavor profile.

They have a VIP membership club where you get one bottle a month and early or extended access to their really high end or fast selling stuff. It's your actual VIP number which they match up with you account so anyone can't just order it unfortunately. If the membership is available to your state it's worth trying though imo. Great company and you get a cool gift with each bottle every month. It's not cheap bourbon though. Pretty much $89-$170 for most bottles. It is extremely well done and their folks picking barrels are really good. I've probably tried 150 of their barrels and disliked maybe 10. If you are local you also get a free flight every week which doesn't help most people but it is pretty cool for those in the area.

    Quoted from Green-Machine:

They’re something about Weller Antique that just hits me in all the right places.

A lot more spice and traditional bourbon flavor imo. The others get really grain forward.

Another absolute fire local release. This thing is heat and cinnamon for days. It's like a red hot candy is using your pallet as a punching bag.

    #1270 1 year ago
    Quoted from Green-Machine:

How are their other products? It’s looking limited to these here in Ohio[quoted image]

Where they really shine is on their special release single barrels but they honestly don't have bad products. I know they have an out of state VIP program where they ship one bottle a month to subscribers along with some merch but it's like $200 per month. Most of their best bottles never make it out of the gift shop unless you are an out of state VIP member. They have a facebook group and typically post a very few of the premium bottles only for their out of state VIP members. The others all hit the floor of their store front and typically sell out in anywhere from a morning to a couple days. All bottles are also on the high side since you are buying hand selected sourced products that they then continue to age in house or finish in another barrel. Typically $80-$170.

I do the instate VIP program and get 1 bottle a month, some free swag gift and a free weekly flight at their bar. This months bottle was named night cap and it was a left over barrel from the 2022 bookers program that Fred Noe ended up not using in the -03 batch. So essentially a bookers single barrel under a NBC label.

    Quoted from FantasticPinball:

    Ok don’t laugh (too hard)
I am looking for a bottle of BTAC because I owe a favour. I don’t have the slightest clue where to start but I have learned all online sales are fake. If one of you can legit help, please send me a PM. I will pay the price and remember when you go looking for a playfield.

Which bottle? Probably looking at 800-1600 USD depending on which one you want.

Yeah, those were great. I only got one and didn't open it until it was too late to get a second. Great bottle. Pretty amazing to me how good some of the stuff they are pumping out it is. The founders series is pretty mind blowing. Probably going to be worth a fortune down the road but I can't help myself from opening them.

    #1285 12 months ago
    Quoted from FantasticPinball:

Understood. Do you have any of the five?

I have several of the GTS and Handy's and a couple of the WLW. All are good but not close to worth secondary prices. None of them are close to my best bottles either. It's largely hype related. I've yet to get a E17 or Saz18 but I don't like the Saz18 at all so that's probably for the best.

Most of the sellers on this site are pretty reputable. There's a Handy for an ok price. Not sure if any would ship to Canada.

Will be traveling to Tennessee in a few weeks.
What are good local bourbons not able to pickup in Northeast?
Available at liquor store or pickup only at distillery?
Keeping in mind my typical price range is $40-$50, might go as high as $80 for something special.

Main distilleries in this area are Jack, Dickel, Wheeler's Raid, Nelson Brothers, and leipers fork. Barrel houses are Southern Collective and Nashville Barrel. You can get some base products in the lower range from most of the distilleries but you won' touch many special releases for $80 anymore unfortunately.

Back from Kentucky & Nashville trip pick up a few bottles of bourbon
While traveling visited Buffalo Trace, Four Roses, NBC, Nelson Greenbrier.
My favorite tour was Greenbrier, great history of two Nelson brothers bringing distillery back to life, plus really enjoy their products. NBC has some awesome bourbons and Rye, just out my range.
Four Roses interesting process of blending ten different bourbons together
Pictures of bourbons my sons and I pickup
Other thing I notice bourbons purchased in NH are a lot cheaper compared to Tennessee.

Nelson's is great imo. It gets trashed a little locally but I have always been happy with their products. Their Honey Cask release is this weekend. I'm looking forward to it. Looking forward to their restaurant opening in a few weeks also.

I celebrated with lunch at BBCo

Picked up the BBCo Scout and Scholar distillery only colab

Stopped in Lux row and was happy to see both the 12y Double barrel and Bload Oath 9 out so I grabbed one of each.

Stopped in a small store in the town I grew up in and grabbed a Makers BEP and a Blantons unfiltered/uncut for $150 which is pretty reasonable.

This poor Nelson's Honey cask isn't going to make it much longer. After last night's over indulging it's down to about a 3rd of the bottle left.

    Quoted from PinDeLaPin:

Not sure bout that Nelson bros stuff othe than some Greenbriar bottle I tried which was not very good.

The Rye is Double Gold in most award contests and if it was more readily available would have a good chance of winning Rye of the year.
Honey Cask is the best pour of the year for me and I can't see how anything coming is going to change that. It's simply incredible if you like a honey finish
Mourvèdre finish is a little hot and rich for some but it's also an excellent pour, just not up to the honey casks standards
Black Briar is a stout beer finish that is really good for what it is if you like more chocolate notes in your bourbon but it's not my favorite

For me Nelson's is about as good at blending and finishing bourbons and anyone in the industry. Their flavor profile won't be for everyone though and their specialty bottles have gotten real expensive. Their big remodel is almost finished and their restaurant will open soon, definitely worth a visit for anyone going through Nashville.

Very nice! You have an amazing bunch of bottles!

Been very fortunate to have several connections in the industry and I've wasted more time and money then I'd like to admit standing in lines. I pretty much don't do the releases anymore though. I have a big collection and whatever I easily get I get at this point. There's always another special release coming. The only other thing this year I'd really like to get my hands on is a Maker's Cellar Aged.

    #1388 6 months ago
    Quoted from Green-Machine:

Yes to the comment about the lines. I gave up waiting too. I was like an addict for a while there…….thrill of the hunt. I realized that most of the people in the lines were just there to score a bottle to sell, same guys and gals over and over. Like it’s their job or something. I’m in a controlled state so the prices are good and people take advantage of it. That doesn’t sit well with me.

I hunted pretty hard for 18 months then I finally realized I'll never have them all and there is always more coming. I've got plenty and don't need that many bottles a year now. Plus half of the stuff people are so obsessed over really isn't that good anyway. And yes, always the same people in every damn line. I could drive 3 hrs and you see 50% the same people. Bourbon production is finally starting to catch up to demand. Bottles that used to sell out instantly are starting to sit. I think the craze in dwindling. Will be nice to be able to walk into your local store again and see allocated bottles without lines and people fighting over them.

    #1394 6 months ago

Good article showcasing why no one needs to be paying secondary prices for a lot of these bottles. There will be plenty of MWND for everyone. All of these seem to be in much larger batches with much lower quality across a lot of the distilleries. Prices skyrocket while quantity made skyrockets and quality drops.

Had the regular 46 and wasn’t a huge fan. Good but just missing something. I might have to give the cask strength a try

Different world for sure. Makers 46 regular is a decent mixer, not much else.

Couple of local products. Southern Collective sources barrels. They finished these 2 ryes in Honey and Maple. Both very good.

Sorry to ask such a silly question but how do people come by Pappy? I'm always trying to find one of the 23yr bottles but have yet to find a liquor store that admits they get any in the yearly allocation much less who's palm I have to grease to get my grubby hands on one... So... I figure I'd ask here to see if anyone has any insight at all. To be clear, I'm not spending $5K on something that retails for like $300 and even if I wanted to, I'm never sure if I'm looking at a scam website or one that actually has it actually in stock. Thank you in advance to anyone who has any ideas for me.

The 23y you will need to win a raffle for the most part. Lots of stores raffle the rarest stuff and often you don't even have to be a real frequent customer to enter. Many stores don't even get a 23y and those that do either raffle or sell for 3500+ to someone that cost doesn't matter.

With all that said the 23y really does suck. It's like drinking a piece of wood. The 15y is by far the best imo out of the 3 pappy's and is much more attainable.

    Quoted from pch3727:

I've yet to see Blanton's at a reasonable price in the past few years down in Houston. Heck I get excited when I see BT or Weller SR at MSRP, which unfortunately is rare.

BT just raised the price of Blanton's again. Stores are paying $55 cost for a bottle now. So I wouldn't expect to see it anywhere very cheap anymore. They are starting to do Blanton's Gold store pick though, several of those dropped in TN recently.

    Old Fitz…yum! I like
Believe it or not after sampling all the Pappy’s at the same time I preferred Pappy 10 year.

The Old Rip 10y if very solid. I actually like the 12y Lot B a lot. It's a touch smoother then the 10y. The 15y is a lot thicker and more viscus then those 2 with some deeper flavors. Some people will like it, some will not. The 20y and 23y are not very good imo. Which is funny because people pay fortunes trying to get them. I'm perfectly fine never owning either of them. If I win won in a lottery cool, I'll sit it on the shelf or trade it for several bottles I do want.

    Quoted from Green-Machine:

I firmly believe many people are influenced by the product name. I love blind tasting with fellow bourbon drinkers. So so so many times I have witnessed people love a blind taste sample, when in the past they conveyed not liking the same exact bottle. Yes, the palate can change multiple times a day but the eye can surely influence your thoughts on something.

For sure, people are so biased based off branding. Most people don't even know the flavor profiles and think they should only buy stuff from the monthly allocations drops. Nothing better than Rare Breed or ECBP beating GTS in a blind or doing a wheated blind with Larceny BP, Makers 46 cask, Weller BP and weller brings up the rear. People are always shocked to find out their Wellerzzzz are not the best product out there lol.

For anyone gearing up for the BTAC releases do yourself a favor and find a ECBP C923. Another shipment of it just dropped and there is simply no way that GTS is going to beat it this year. The secret is already mostly out so it will not sit on shelves but for $90 it is likely to be bourbon of the year. Incredible bottle by HH. I'm on my 2nd one and have 1 more unopened to save for down the road. It's somewhat available, affordable, and doesn't require waiting in a line or selling a kidney.

I also recently opened a Makers Cellar aged and this years BEP release. For me the BEP wins and is a fraction of the price and is available. Grab them up at stores while you still can, its a great bottle. Every store in KY is has several still while people walk in and pay $800 for the weller SiB behind the counter

Jgentry - Can you share anything re. Flavor Profile on that EC Barrel Proof (C923)?
I can usually find those local, but am wondering what you think a great bottle has to offer in the way of taste. Some people like the Cinnamon others the Vanilla / Brown Sugar... so, what does this batch bring to the table?

With any of the ECBP you get heat but some really strong complex flavors. C923 everything is just perfectly balanced. Heat, cinnamon, dark fruits, rich and complex. Straight fire imo. Best batch in several years.

    #1445 4 months ago
    Quoted from Green-Machine:

Just finished sampling them both! We really enjoyed them both!
Thanks for the suggestion of the Maker 46 cask strength.
We definitely share similarities in liked flavor profiles.
    Very Tasty

Glad you enjoyed them, the cask 46 I'd pretty hard to beat for the price. Not a lot of good $50 cask strengths available anymore.

First off his lists are always pretty biased based on sponserships and who gave him what each year. There's always just some insane stuff that doesn't belong on each top 100 but overall it's still a decent list.

I haven't had Larceny C923 yet so I was surprised to see it so how. The A123 is excellent though. 2 Different products from Nashville in the top 5.

That HH BiB is one of the best out there for the money. Even better when it’s the $39.99 msrp

There’s a shop an hour from me where I still get it for $40, but I’m not gonna lie I’ve still paid $60 locally just to have some. Old Tub has gone up too.

What’s your guys take on high west and weller?

High West has some very good bottles but imo it's pretty overrated. Same feeling about the entire Weller line. There are some amazing Weller store picks but overall it always comes across extremely grain forward for my preference in wheated bourbons. For me Larceny BP beats Weller BP all day every day. David Nicholson imo is better than Weller SR. Tastes can be extremely subjective though and people love flavors that I do not. So it really comes down to what your tastes prefer.

Been 14 years since I've had the gold rush from HH. I was very surprised to find someone with 6 of them. My brother brought one back from a work trip in Japan. We drank the whole thing in one night. Got absolutely trashed. I don't think many people collected or held on to a lot of bourbon back then. We bought a bottle and drank it. Rinse and repeat. Different world back then.

    Quoted from pch3727:

Anyone following this 13th colony drama? Basically people are claiming 13th colony is putting additives in their double oaked bourbon to achieve the dark color. Also they are claiming that they are being deceptive about their labeling and sourcing their whiskey/distillate. Regardless on which side you fall on, it's an interesting deep dive into how these companies can play games with labeling versus what's actually in the bottle.
    https://thebourbonculture.com/whiskey-essentials/a-lot-of-people-had-opinions-about-my-13th-colony-sourcing-article-heres-my-response/

It's overrated imo. Whether it's fudged or not who can say. Only the people directly involved. Their base bottles are solid, decent bourbon for the price. Double barrels in general tend to be way to oak and bitter forward for me. Lux row does the only double barrels that don't lean that way that I really enjoy. Even the Woodford doubles hit some flavor notes that I think just don't blend well with bourbon. Some people love them though, there's something for everyone.

Great line up. My goal in 2024 is to acquire a MM Cellar Aged. Those shelves behind you though... a man could die happy with that selection. Bravo

If I'm not careful I might die trying to get though them.

From February on I'm only going to buy 12 bottles this year. So I'm gonna have to be picky as hell. Need collection to shrink a little each year so I have a chance of enjoying it all. I fear my little shits of nieces and nephews will end up drinking it when I'm dead . Gonna try to limit myself to 12 bottles per year from now on. It's gonna be real hard though.

Most of the smokewagon releases are pretty easily got in middle TN. It seems like it was a craze about 18 months ago but it has died down a lot now and it's on most shelves. I'm not much a fan of it personally. I get some off flavors, almost a quartz like note or something. Must be something to do with their water source.
