If you guys want a 4K **GoPro** to record your pinball tournaments, Aldi has the Maginon 4K cameras again for $70

This time they include a dual battery charger and a wristband remote control.

A zillion mounts come with it (bicycle, underwater, belt, tripod..... , and 2 batteries.

I bought one last year and it records dim pinball games with no problem.

If you lower the resolution to 1080p, you can record 60 frames per second; so you can do slo-mo playback.

It also has an app for your phone where you can view and control.

Is it as good as a $500 GoPro 6 ? Nope. But it's better than the older GoPros, and plenty good enough for pinball

What ISO settings does it have, especially for lower light rooms?

Without changing any settings, here is a frame grab, from a sys11 game in a completely dark room.

    The lens is @ f/2, at 0 gain, 4K, 25fps:

Well, this is a strange state of affairs. I am getting so used to wanting to go buy something and the local store (take your pick, Cabelas, Home Depot, Sears, Lowes, etc.) and all of the stores are trying emulate Amazon with buying online and having the item shipped in with no local stock. Sometimes I do like cash and carry.

And here is this Aldi link and you can NOT buy online, as far as I can tell. So now I have to make a mad rush to see if one the the 3 stores in my town have any of these that I can buy.

EDIT: It looks like the sale starts on July 18 and it looks like my local Aldi's are stocked up. I know where I will at 9am on 7-18.

With no online buying it looks like if you live in Bum F Egypt you are either in for a long drive or just SOL.

Is this the same thing? If someone needs to buy it online, it looks like it doesn't even sell for $44 shipped on eBay.

I have a similar device, you can't stream with them and pulling files off them, at least mine, is a PIA as you have to physically connect to a PC to do it. Not ideal when you are out. My Pixel xl2 does a much better job.

Prices for these cameras are dirt cheap. They really only seem to be useful for action shooting and as alternatives to a gopro, not really for stationary pinball video.

You must have something completely different.

This one has WiFi streaming, wirelessly connects to your phone for remote recording & remote viewing, has HDMI out, has SD memory card you can remove to move your clips to another device (if you did not want to use WiFi or were still using the camera with another SD card).

    Quoted from Lermods:

My Pixel xl2 does a much better job.

The Pixel is a great $800 cellphone, but it's too heavy, fragile and expensive to strap to my dog's neck while it kills a racoon, or put on my fatbike's fender when I hit the trails.

For Pinball use, $1600 is a lot of money to have one Pixel on the playfield and one focused on the backbox

    #12 5 years ago

This is the one I have, not really happy with it. I can connect to my phone via WiFi, but it doesn’t work well. Maybe the one you show is better. I see the price on mine went up, I got it for $49.

    Thanks for the heads up.

They are PERFECT for recording pinball video.

The f/2 lens records in low light without having to artificiality crank up the gain settings.

They are lightweight enough to use the included handlebar mount and install them on a regular microphone stand to record the playfield (or you could use your playfield rotisserie with slight modification).

They are lightweight enough that you could stick the mount to the ceiling with 3Ms Command strips - and cleanly remove latter without removing paint.

Simply looking at your phone's screen tells you that the image is centered, and allows you to start the recording without touching the camera.

At only $70, you could easily buy 2 of them and do the backbox coverage with 1st, the playfield with the 2nd.

The phone app allows you to control 3 cameras, so you could also cover the player's face, or "ball's eye view" from the apron with a 3rd camera.

The fact that they are wireless allows you to quickly move from game to game, no dragging around cables or power supplies.

Right now I can't think of a better way to record pinball video.

It officially goes on sale the 18th, but many Aldi stores have them out on the floor right now for purchase.

I grabbed one and it rang up for $69, so it's already in the computer at the sale price - you just need the manager to put them out on the floor.

    #16 5 years ago

I picked one up today. It was the last one on the shelf. No idea if they are going to re-stock or not.

That would be funny if they sold out before they officially went on sale...

    #18 5 years ago

I checked with my east side store this morning and the employed said "tomorrow".

I checked with my west side store this afternoon and walked out with two of them. From what I could tell they had 12 units on the shelf with empty space behind. When they are gone that are gone.

Thanks for the heads up, Vid.

I got one yesterday at the Morristown, Tn. Aldi. About a dozen in stock. Rang up at $69. Thanks again Vid.

Hey. The boxes my little cams came in say on the side that there are 2x 850mAh batteries included. I bought two of these cams and there is only one of these batteries in each box.

I should have 4. Anybody who bought 1 cam should have 2 batteries.

To those of you who bought, how is your count?

Where can we buy these little suckers, anyway? Google ain't being very friendly.

Correction: I have three. I forgot about the battery when I opened the 2nd box. No loose battery in 1st box.

And where can you buy replacements? A Google search does not look encouraging.

I do good at making myself look like an idiot. I found battery #4 laying under something else on the floor.

And I am not having any good luck with the apps from the Apple store. There are 3 apps that I see: AC777, AC400, and AC-800W.

I have downloaded all 3 apps onto my iPhone 4S.

When I try to add a camera I keep getting the message
"Connection Error. Wi-Fi connection with devise not found."

Anybody have an idea what is up with that? Is my iPhone too old?

I have no ideas. And there re no instructions.

    Thanks

EDIT: When all fails, find and read the instructions. The oldest iPhone that can be used is the iPhone 5. I like my 4S (sigh).

    #30 5 years ago

Try turning off your mobile data. Took me a while to figure that out. I have a different camera, but it is similar.

Also, i use the finalcam app.

    #31 5 years ago

Also, remember to turn on the wifi of the camera first, then connect to your phone.

The wifi was off by default (probably saves battery life).

Even if your iPhone is too old, you have the included wrist-remote that can start/stop video recording, or take single shots as a conventional camera.

Every Android user has a drawer full of last year's phones, so ask around at work, someone will give you a free phone.

I use my old Moto phone as my bedroom TV remote, after the real one disappeared.

I stopped at aldis again today, since they usually restock on wednesday, but no cameras in sight.

Though, I did get some parts containers for $3.49 each, and some sort of collapsible bin cart.

I'll be interested to see how this camera takes pinball video and the feedback on it's use. i have an Aokon, which is also 4k and I think is similar, and it's kind of glaring. It also only takes movies in .MOV format, which means I have to convert it to MP4 to get it up on youtube I believe. downloading from the camera to my phone also takes a long time and if the phone goes into sleep mode while you are doing the download, it stops and you have to start over. What I have to do is download it to my pc and then use third party software (freemake) to convert it MP4. Below is a sample of the video I took this morning.

The fastest transfer is to pull out the SD card, and plug that card directly into your computer.

Same as a DSLR Camera. It takes too long to transfer a day's worth of shooting to your laptop by WiFi. Swap memory SD cards, and do a fast data dump.

Same with DSLR Cameras, they also only shoot in MOV for hi-rez video.

Don't worry, Youtube accepts all these formats:

    .MOV
    .MPEG4
    .MP4
    .AVI
    .WMV
    .MPEGPS
    .FLV

I didn't realise you could record the whole pinball machine with LCD/DMD display with one overhead cam. I should have picked up the Aldi. If anyone has purchased one, I'd be keen to see a video recording of one of your machines.

I used a tripod extended to its highest level. My camera (and Vids) come with a tripod mount.

Thx Vid. As you can tell I am green on using it. I can’t figure out how to remove the camera glare from the leds. Any thoughts?

    Quoted from Lermods:

I can’t figure out how to remove the camera glare from the leds. Any thoughts?

It won't be a single solution, but a combination of things:

Take the glass off. Dirty or scratched glass will diffract light.

Make sure your camera lens is clean, dirty lenses will diffract light.

Make sure none of your LEDs are visible directly to the lens. All LEDs should be defused by playfield plastics, discs of cloudy milk carton plastic or aiming away from the lens.

Note on the screenshot of the Comet above, you don't directly see any LED bulbs.

    https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/vids-guide-hardtop-restoration-comet/page/2#post-4485234

Shine bright lights up on the ceiling, and let the light naturally reflect down on the playfield.

Turn on all the room lights.

The absolute best is if you know a photographer, borrow a "softbox" and stand. Set this up above the game and you will have shadow-free even lighting. The softbox will scatter the light, so you don't get a shadow from the camera itself.

Flood the game with light from the sides pointed down on the game.

I use these on a stand next to the game.

If you want to do pinball streaming or recording, grab some c920 webcams. They are about $50 on amazon and do a great job.

    will these do 1080p/60?

In my view you really need 60fps.

If you want to be super cheap for diffused light, I saw an artist's setup for photographing her art and she a few cheap clamp lights in a couple of cheap, translucent Rubbermaid type type tubs. She got GREAT results.
