It's official. 4-way network-connected physical pinball is in the books.

4 machines, 1-player per machine, network-connected, and racing against each other... Cosmic Cart Racing on the P3.

In addition to growing its library of traditional-style pinball games, Multimorphic continues to push the envelope and deliver new ways to have fun playing pinball. Experience 4-way pinball yourself at the Texas Pinball Festival next week. Shoot the shots... win the race!

Addressing some email questions:

Cosmic Cart Racing has 3 gameplay options:

1) Standalone play - Up to 4 players can join a single game on one machine. Each player races a heat. Win the race to move on; otherwise your game is over. Circuit races alternate with time trials. Fastest times are tracked in high score tables for time trials.

2) LAN play - Up to 4 machines can connect to each other over Wi-Fi locally, allowing 4-way head-to-head racing. Just like most race-based arcade games, LAN play is a single-race.

3) WAN play (coming soon) - Same as LAN play but over the internet. You can either register a new race with a server or join somebody else's race.

Gameplay is what you would expect a cart-style racing game to be... high pressure shot making, smooth flowing shots, and strategy with use of powerups. This is NOT a traditional 3-ball game. It's a racing game... hit your shots and go faster. Miss your shots and slow down. Drain the ball and spin out. Race until you complete the track or you run out of fuel.

We'll get some video of 4-player racing at TPF.

Cosmic Cart Racing is extremely fun. I was able to put three games on it late last night - the playfield layout is quite fun with several looping shots.

Finding the speed up shots and items are key - the first two games I ignored the items (to my detriment).

gstellenberg - I haven't forgotten - we still have to battle! Thanks for bringing the games! The LAN play is seamless! Very, very impressed.

Thanks for bringing the multi-bingo and for walking me through some games. Such an amazing project.

Happy to do so - this was my first experience playing CCR, and I was able to play a couple of single player and several multiplayer games.

First, I really enjoy the concept - the adrenaline rush of pinball with the drama of a cart race. It's a very neat marriage of the two.

The multiplayer is really quite seamless - each player presses start, the game will determine cart #, and you choose your racer/cart. At that point, the game proceeds as normal - you want to speed up by hitting as many flowing, looping shots as possible while avoiding drains, scoops and other obstacles that serve to slow you down.

You can earn items by completing the lane change sequence or hitting the captive ball behind the glowing chamber on the right of the playfield. The items I have seen are helpful to your racer, but do not hinder your opponents - I'm not sure if those types of items exist. Each player is racing towards the goal, as in the single player game, but instead of playing against 'bots', you are playing against the people beside you. This gives you the ability, as in couch competitive cart games, to taunt or congratulate your foes/friends, and I really enjoy that aspect.

Traditional multiplayer pinball games require you to utilize 'hotseat' to switch players. I'm not a huge fan of that, because you spend most of the time waiting to play.

This networked implementation solves the waiting game issue, and I'm thrilled I was able to sneak away for a while and blast some carts through space.

I wish I had more time to battle it out with @gstellenberg, @ryanclaytor, or three other random folks from the festival. It's wonderful.

"Good job, it's beautiful." That's some seriously good praise coming from a developer. I fired questions like those at BJ for a whole weekend, and by the end I was ready to place my order.

Game stats on CCR during TPF:

4 machines averaged 553 plays each.
216 of those were full 4-player games!

Flippers were activated about 20k times each, slings got about 1k hits each.
