Gottlieb, 1975From what I can see - other 300s allow the ball to roll freely under the plastic between the two kickout holes. Someone installed a triangle rubber to block the flow. This is annoying because now there are holes in the playfield for these posts. Other machines seem to just have a 5/16 ring around one post in the front. Why would a past owner do this? Is it widely understood that the ball runs into trouble up there?
Most likely this was an operator modification to make the playfield scoring more conservative. As I remember from playing this machine, if the ball was directed to one of those kickout holes and it missed the hole, there was a high possibility that it would end up in the other kickout hole. I can see that blocking the path between the two kickout holes would greatly limit scoring. This was a simple modification for the operator to make more money...
