Be sure to use a very opaque paint. I initially used some quick dry, red nail polish my wife had, and it didn't block enough light. I ended up carefully cutting black duct tape to apply to the tabs on my Star Wars. Whether paint or tape, be sure that what you use won't peel or flake off. For instance, I would NOT use electrical tape.
