5 balls on EM's, 3 balls on newer games. It feels like that is how the makers intended. Then again it's all about the game. I have a Stampede that is pretty easy to max the score at 19990 on 5 balls, so I turned it down to 3. I try to set a game up as close to out of the box as possible, unless a compelling reason makes me want to change it.
