The day is here, I finally got number 2. It's a DE JP. Same year and manufacturer as my TFTC. It is in bad condition. The previous owner did not know anything about pinballs. It doesn't work, the backbox is broken, translite glass is in pieces at the bottom of the cabinet. The owner did not know how to put the glass on so it has 7 years of dirt. I lifted the playfield and the guy said, I didn't even know that did that. The worst is I found a mouse nest the size of a basketball. (I'm sure there are a few chewed wires in there.) The boards actually look okay despite backbox damage. No leaking batteries.

Even though it has all of these issues, I'm okay with it because I payed $0. The owner said it did not work and it was filthy. I asked if he had checked fuses, connections, and solders. He said he didn't know it had fuses so I told him I would be down Saturday. Not sure how to fix the backbox, going to start cleaning it Tuesday, then it is time to troubleshoot.

Give me some positive vibes...I need them. Here are some pics

the play field looks good. no wear in the scoops. everything can most likely be repaired. trans lights are available. and you got it free. at worst you can make some cash to put towards another pin by parting it out.

#3 12 years ago

looks totally restorable, I would have carted that home all day. I bet i could get it playing within 4 hours

#4 12 years ago

That's the kind of challenge I love - and for free!! Nice pick up.

#5 12 years ago

First off, you can't beat free!! Just clean it up,and start checking things out electronically. I am sure that you will have it up and running in no time. This is my wife's favorite so I have to track one down some day. Congrats on a great pick up!

JP for free?! Awesome score!

That's the nice thing about broken machines! They don't get played (until you fix them, that is).

#8 12 years ago

Play field should clean up real nice!

Lucky...

Good haul and Good Luck!

The head isn't a big problem. A couple large clamps and some gorilla glue will fix it. As long as the artwork on the sides isn't damaged no one will ever know. Black paint is easy to match. The sheen should be satin.

The electronics are going to be another matter. I would suggest disconnecting the pf for the time being. If you had mice and they chewed wires then you are in for some fun. Disconnect the pf harness. I would go ahead and pull the pf. It will be easier to see if anything is chewed up. I would also go over every inch of wiring in the cabinet. Do this before you attempt to boot it up.

You need to find out what the bare number of plugs to boot the cpu are. Then add the sound card back in. Next add the dmd and then the pbb. After that, disconnect the sound and dmd boards. You don't want to risk frying them if you have some bad wiring.

Put the pf back in and connect things in sections. If you plug everything in and something is bad, you may damage more. I would expect issues regardless, but with any luck you can avoid adding new ones.

You will want a tumbler for this game. Harbor freight has a cheap one that comes up for sale. If you were closer to Indianapolis I would let you drop the stuff and tumble it for you. I would suggest cold blue for the ramps unless you have access to a rivet press. You can pick cold blue up at a gun store, gander mountain, etc. Sand the ramps clean and follow the directions. It won't come out as nice as new ones, but it is much better than rust.

The pf should clean up nicely from what you posted. This will be a project, but for free it will be well worth it.

Can't beat that price. It's looking like 2012 is going to be a good year for us pin-pickers. I'm heading out to get a new machine this afternoon. Not free, but a pretty good deal.

#13 12 years ago

Looks like a diamond in the rough. Like it was left in Jurassic Park lol, but congrats and I think you'll be showing off the after pics soon enough and nobody will be able to tell the difference after some hard work.

#14 12 years ago

I bought a beautiful JP yesterday. Never knew a restored pin looked so good. Nice pick up for free. You'll get it running. Us pinheads are a determined bunch. I see that rough looking pin, and all I think is "wow, you got a JP for free!!!"

#15 12 years ago

Sorry this was a double post, I have two of these going on now. The playfield looks great other than mouse shit and kitty litter and 7 years of dust. That is the first thing, I will be cleaning that up. The owner had dropped it against a wall so that is why the backbox is shattered and no translite. Luckily he didn't know how to get the glass in so at least I only have backbox glass on the playfield. The boards all look fine, actually better than fine despite the backbox damage. I am not going to plug it in until I check every wire. I am terrified of frayed wires touching.

Can Armor-All work on cleaning up the apron?
What is the best way to clean plastic ramps short of flame polishing? (they don't look worthy of a flame polish.)

Way to rub it in...

#17 12 years ago

Don't flame polish until you have broke ramps to practice on! It is very easy to ruin plastics when trying to flame polish.

I would just use novus 3 followed by novus 2 on the ramps. You would be surprised with the results.

I would do the same with the apron. I would skip the armor all treatment.

#19 12 years ago

Free is a good price! Have fun with the restore.

#20 12 years ago

nice score - good luck with it

#21 12 years ago

I'd love a restore to be my second pin. Certainly can't beat free, enjoy the process.

Ah I emailed this guy right after he posted it on CL on Thursday early evening and asked if it was for real or if he was just collecting emails, he said yes it was for real. I said, when can I pick it up.. no reply. Oh well, at least it went to a pinsider!

That's hilarious he told me about you. He said and some guy actually called and asked if I was just collecting emails.

I figured I would hear that at least once.

#24 12 years ago

The most positive vibe is that awesome price tag!

#25 12 years ago

Free Pin!! Thats all that needs to be said. I dont think i can ever expect that kind of luck.... please ..please pinball gods.. I have been good all year.

#26 12 years ago

What a score, congrats

#27 12 years ago

Nice score....now get to work

#28 12 years ago

Free is the best way to start on a project, especially a good title like JP, nice score & good luck!

Oh well, he didn't have a phone number in his ad and I see "free pin, email me" and I'm hesitant. Then when he didn't respond to my second email for more info and asking him to call me I figured it was just a scam. Perfect project pin, the one I've been looking for all winter. Good luck with it and let us know how it goes!

#30 12 years ago

Congrats! You might luck out on the playfield. I had a similar experience with a BF, though it wasn't free by any stretch, but technically worked. The playfield was so gunky that the filth may have protected it. It cleaned up nicely and then I hit it with a Treasure Trove polishing kit and it gleams now. Hopefully your mechanized dino and ball launch gun work okay. Good luck!

#31 12 years ago

JP is a really fun pin and even though it is goin to cost some cash to get it running, it looks like it will clean up really easy.

#32 12 years ago

UPDATE: I need someone to take some up close pictures of the front left scoops coils. Especially the one on the right. I had some chewed completely off. Diode missing and I need to know what kind it is. Would appreciate someone sending me those. jdneible (AT) gmail (dot) com or here if you want. After using about a roll of electric tape on exposed wires I was ready to plug it in. I stopped and decided to check the fuses. One of the big boys was bad so I replaced it and plugged it in. It fired right up but said missing ball. Took out the ball trough and realized there was some kitty litter under one of the switches. Cleaned it out and that was solved. Found a roll over switch that is bad (or dirty) and I found a ramp switch that is bad (or dirty). All coils work except the upper flipper. And the DMD worked but all of the plastics that it is mounted to are broken off. I was so excited that it worked since they are pretty pricey and have had to buy one before. But then I noticed no sound. I looked every where for chewed off wires. That was when I realized that I turned it all the way down when I first got it. All of that said I will be mailing the guy $100. Its not much and you all are probably saying why he said free but that is just what I have decided. I will wait til after I have her shining so I can send him some pictures.

Nice gesture. I believe in karma.

Half the joy is getting it up and running. Good luck, and keep the posts coming as it comes along.

#34 12 years ago

He might want you to mail him $1000 when its done.

#35 12 years ago

Well....good luck with that POS Love to see the finished product if that thing can be rebuilt....

#36 12 years ago

Deal of the century, have fun getting her going, great find!!

#37 12 years ago

Going to go buy media for my first tumber experience, I have it shopped out all the way to the first scoops. It looks great. I have one insert that is coming up on the corner in front of the left Scoop. It says "C" I believer. Should I just take a fine razor and cut off the little section that is popping up?

#38 12 years ago

Starting backbox repair. Top left. It works, not gorgeous but def.player's quality.

Nice score FP!!

#40 12 years ago

That doesn't look too bad, just dirty. Also, you got free mouse pets out of the deal. You can make custom keyfobs with their pelts.

#41 12 years ago

Nice, I think, this is the real hobby, not just trade and play on them...
Respect!

#42 12 years ago

Great find. I'm sure it will look awesome when you are finished fixing it up. Always nice to see someone bring a machine back to life.

#43 12 years ago

Good Luck, i would love to try my hand at something like this. keep us updated.

#44 12 years ago

LouMatt I'd like to have it finished by the expo but we'll sre. I don't even know if they still have room.

#45 12 years ago

Playfield cleaning is complete. Everything works except one scoop is missing a diode and unattached wires. Have to fix the bottom corner of the backbox. I need to change hinges and rails put a new lock in the coin door, take stuff out of tumbler, reattach, clean out cabinet again. Paint backbox fix ups and then play. The game is 100% functional other than scoop.
by the way, I found the secret to mylar removal. It is years of exposure to mouse piss. comes off easier than a banana peal.
Oh I also need a new translite and glass and trim for it.

#46 12 years ago

Awesome, this just keeps getting better. Free and not too much to fix, how did you get so lucky?

Let's see some pics of the after, since we already saw the before...

JPs must attract rodents... I had one in my garage where rats had decided to nest in there... re-soldered the chewd wires and it was all good to go! A great find indeed, good luck with it... and I hope the smell's gone!

I wish I could fire up the dinosaur and let him eat one of those dirty b@stards.

Wow, great pick up. Doesn't look terrible and should be a cool project!
