Quoted from alveolus:An official replacement supposedly in the works. ETA who knows. Price estimate $50
Is this an official replacement from arcade1up themselves? Or are you referring to the plug and play spinner that guy on YouTube is making?

I just ordered the Asteroids game yesterday from Gamestop. It was just delivered!
Apparently it shipped out of a warehouse pretty close by.
I'll give the stock spinner a try, but I was honestly probably going to modify this cabinet into something else anyway.
Quoted from Spyderturbo007:Ah crap. I guess I didn't read enough of the thread. What's wrong with the spinner?
The real spinner has a heavy flywheel, so if you give it a hard turn, the momentum keeps it free spinning.
The A1U spinner has no flywheel, so it just turns.
You can get a real Tempest spinner, but it costs more than the A1U, and you have to get an aftermarket bearing kit to make it REALLY fly.

The rotary encoder tech isn't even all that complex. It seems like something cheap-ish, keeping the same style of spinner would be possible in mass production. I guess they didn't want to mess with custom parts.
A diy solution could probably make use of an arduino to read the rotations and output to something usable by the A1up control inputs (with software-adjustable sensitivity programmed into the Arduino).
Quoted from Jason43:Does the 1up spinner have an encoder wheel, or does it use a pot, like a paddle controller?
It's a digital rotary encoder
Kind of like a pot, but it puts out electrical "tics" rather than resistance. Usually they put out 2 channels of data (A&B), so the circuit knows which direction the encoder is turning.
hqdefa;ult (resized).jpgI wonder if these enclosed Chinese encoders are any good: ebay.com link: 600P R Photoelectric Incremental Rotary Encoder 5 24V AB 2 Phases Shaft 6mm
I can only assume they're using an enclosed encoder disc due to the form-factor (otherwise seems like they'd be smaller like the digital encoders, but I honestly have no idea. If those free spin decently, perhaps a semi-cheap DIY option is out there.

That Youtube guy as I understand it is collaborating with Arcade1up to design an aftermarket replacement.

Cool, I didn't know that. From what I've seen of his videos, it looks like that spinner will be pretty nice. Hopefully he can get it working well with all the games.
Just picked up 4 of these at Walmart for $179/each. Asteroids, rampage, pacman, and street fighter. Going to keep them in box while I decide if I really want to start collecting these things. They look pretty cool, but the purist collector in me still struggles with not getting original cabs. At least I have them at the discount price before they're gone.
I "spun" the spinner at CES....JFC, it isn't a spinner, it is a knob that moves/clicks. it is bad, if the original games actually spun, this isn't anything like it.

nice! they are all full price with 1 or 2 at 200, near me :/

I'd think that the removal of the extra zero on the end would be enough for the purists to not care so much.
The one thing that I've had to get over is the crt. Not the scan lines, but the flat screen. I've played some original arcade machines where the monitor had been replaced by a flat screen. And it kinda bugged me that the game was so flat. Never realized how much a curved screen was burned into my mind with these games.

The price is obviously the hook. I think they look great over all, and can't wait to see the next couple waves. I need to get the Marquee lit up on each one though. Overall, these are cool, and I like that the footprint is smaller so I can still park my car in the garage easily.
those are pretty cool but for how much he probably spent in time and money to do that he shoulda just got a real big blue
Its about 750 bucks to do a full swap out with Retro Pi , full button and joystick swaps.....etc. Thats not including the graphix
Quoted from BoJo:Person on the forum scored 3 different models at his Wal-Mart in CA for $75 each. Wal-Mart's around me been staying at $299. If they drop that low it will be hard to pass on any of them.
Which city in CA? Can you find out?
Quoted from modfather:Its about 750 bucks to do a full swap out with Retro Pi , full button and joystick swaps.....etc. Thats not including the graphix
I don't think I came close to that for a Retropie install. Even at full price, I'm at:
$300 for the game
$30 for joysticks/buttons/usb encoders (buttons I got were no better than stock, so I kept stock buttons - could spend more on better quality)
I had a raspberry Pi, but that plus power supply + sd card is what $50?
$35 for LCD board
I kept the stock speaker and used the amplifier built into the LCD board, so no extra costs there.
About $415 for a basic RPi swap in, more for premium buttons/joystick and amplifier/upgraded speakers. I have no idea what custom artwork would cost, though. Seems like retheme kits on eBay are about $200. So if that's the baseline, maybe 600-800 for a full retheme?
Get a discount cab as a starting point and that price goes down even more.
Quoted from Luckydogg420:I called customer support today asking about getting the bat top joysticks for SF2, since they changed them in later runs of the game. The guy said that once their website is fully designed, they will have replacement parts available for order.

Ya, I can get them in 5-8 days, but they’re about $35 more then the eBay.ca ones. I can wait for them to come.

Crap -- the paint on my Centipede control panel has started to rub off. I've ordered a plastic protector, but I'm still a few weeks away from getting one. I thought I read that the protectors come with reproduction graphics printed on the back side. Is that right? If so, I'll feel a little better.

Just got 2 of 3 yesterday and today. Ordered SF2 and Galaga the same day. Got SF yesterday and Galaga today. Ordered at first of year.
They come with the protective Plexiglas, and a paper-printed control deck artwork. I thought maybe it was going to be a sticker, but it's just a piece of paper that you place over and then put the Plexiglas over. *EDIT* It's heavier cardstock. Not a sheet of paper. But still paper.

Got it. I assume it still looks ok?
It's amazing how quick the paint wore off. I didn't consider myself as having played a lot, but there is still a white spot under the area where my wrist rests.
I stayed out of the loop, any online deals? The best I see is $200 for sf2 and rampage at walmart within a hour of me.
However I’m thinking of getting sf2, putting a pi3 in it, upgrade controls and then look into adding light guns.... anyone see light guns added? Ultimarc has them for $95 and the old arcade shooters would be a blast.

I was purposely not really playing mine substantially because of the artwork, so my decks still looked good. I didn't use the artwork sheet. But did lay it over to see what it looks like.
I think it will be "just good enough." Just like the Plexiglas, the button holes are large enough to go around the button, so they'll be a little gap between the button and the artwork. Also, my speaker holes didn't line up at all. So the paper artwork actually covered up the holes of the speaker. So it's not perfect, but as long as you don't do a full inspection of it, you'll never notice.

Be glad you don't play guitar, your crazy acidic skin oils would probably go all the way through the wood.

Don’t laugh, there is a kid in my daughter’s band who plays with gloves which have the tips of the fingers cut off for this very reason.

They do, but the fitment is hit or miss. The artwork they sent me didn't line up to the existing cp very well. I'd try and protect what you have until the plexi overlay gets there.

It is only a little bit of wear at this point. Makes it look more authentic. The trick is going to be trying to keep myself from playing until the protector arrives.

Did you call or go through the website? I did it through the website on 12/26 and haven't heard back from them. My confirmation email said they would notify me when it ships, but nothing so far....

I did it on website around December 17. Did not received a shipping email. Got it Friday. Galaga and Pacman.

Through the website on 12/28/18. No other email from 1Up other than the confirmation from the form. I did however get an email from UPS saying that one of the packages was on it's way. I have it set up so that if a label is made with my address, I get an email notification. But since UPS doesn't know what's in the package, it only said the package was from Eagan, MN, United States. So I still had no idea it was from 1Up until I got it.
Still waiting on Pacman.
