    Gottlieb credit stepper units do step up and step down, but aren't all the parts pretty much standardized between the different stepper units. I know, for example, that if a credit stepper units is gunked up and not working properly, you can get it to "accidentally" reset to zero instead of stepping down.

    We're mostly in agreement. It just depends on what's gunked up.

    But step-up/step-down steppers aren't fundamentally different from step-up/reset ones. For manufacturing cost reasons, they tried to reuse parts as much as possible. How a stepper works just depends on what actuator arms and levers and coils it does/doesn't have.
