Quoted from o-din:

Say your house is paid off and likewise your truck and child support. And the kid is well on her way to making her own fortune. Social security and your part time job are covering all your bills with some leftover.
That IRA account you have been so diligently socking money away in can soon be raided with no penalty. What to buy with the money?

How hypothetical is this question?

#186 6 years ago
Quoted from o-din:

Well, the house was paid off 15 years ago, and my daughter is getting straight 'A's in college and already has a decent paying job. My part time job already covers all my bills with money left over.
I just turned 56 so I am 6 years away from being able to collect social security and three years away from IRA withdrawals with no penalty. Now if I hadn't already raided the IRA account some when I got into this hobby, I'd really be farting thru velvet soon.

So, not hypothetical. Congrats, man!

Quoted from o-din:

Nah. Those high taxes are only for the immigrants and other new arrivals around here. My property tax is $1k a year.

You're welcome.

Quoted from o-din:

If it wasn't for Prop 13 I'd probably be back living at the beach working as hard as I used to. The neighbors in the same house pay probably 8 grand a year. It makes it so you want to stay put.

We're on the other end of this. Neighbors who bought in the 70's bought their houses for, essentially, what we pay over two years in property taxes.

There has been extensive research on both the positives and negatives of Prop 13, so I won't re-litigate the issue here. What I will say is that nobody forced me to live where I live (ha...mistakenly typed "love" here; this is accurate) and I bought knowing full-well what all the costs, benefits and downsides were.

I'm grateful that we have dynamic neighborhood comprised of families from various generations. Going forward, I do see the housing issue as being a major obstacle to equity, inclusion and economic growth for the region. This was a trending topic on Twitter yesterday:

http://www.businessinsider.com/san-francisco-bay-area-residents-moving-away-increase-u-haul-rental-prices-2018-3

http://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/opinion/the-conversation/sd-how-much-cost-to-move-out-of-san-francisco-california-20180306-htmlstory.html

BUT for now, California is booming as evidenced by things like:

https://la.curbed.com/2017/7/13/15966156/los-angeles-crane-count-construction-development

and

http://www.sacbee.com/news/politics-government/capitol-alert/article161472333.html

Just so this isn't too deep/heavy,

Quoted from o-din:

So you make the best of it and plant avocado trees everywhere

I'm having issues with my two avocado trees. I can't seem to get the watering right. Sigh.

Quoted from o-din:

If I can live comfortably on the $400 a week I earn now, social security will actually boost my standard of living.

I'd be happy to provide at least one meal a month for access to your games! And, not even crappy fast food.

#204 6 years ago
Quoted from o-din:

That will work too!

Boom!

#205 6 years ago
Quoted from o-din:

Best avocados in town.

See, I have some brown tips on my leaves too...doesn't seem to be hurting your production, though.

#207 6 years ago
Quoted from o-din:

Leaves fall off every year. A couple summers ago that long hot streak of over 100 degrees took it's toll on all of them. I had to cut off all the burnt branches and they are just now recovering.

This is why I love Pinside. I get retirement planning, gardening advice, all of my health questions answered...

#213 6 years ago
Quoted from o-din:

Water thoroughly once a week in the summer and occasionally during dry spells in the winter.
At the end of summer add fertilizer, compost and gypsum and by right now they should be flowering heavily and the bees should be swarming.
Earlier flowering if it is a Mexicola, and later if it is a Reed Variety. I have six different varieties including those two, a Fuerte, Hass, Pinkerton, and Bacon.

My two trees are both Haas. I'll get crackin' on this plan.

Quoted from TheLaw:

You Cali guys and your reefer

Yeah, AA is a filthy with marijuana prudes.

Quoted from Pinballology:

This thread is still trending? Fml.

We've covered a wide range of adult topics here. My bad.

#217 6 years ago
Quoted from o-din:

So reality is this is my retirement plan.
Sell 212,000 organically grown avocados at a buck apiece at a stand in front of my house and live like a king!

At $1 each, you'd be throwing money away.

#249 6 years ago
Quoted from o-din:

Yeah well, I have to compete with the foreigners down the street that would like to undercut me.

With what we pay at the Von's down the street from us, I might have to hit up that stand.

o-din when you make your decision on how to spend your money, are you going to mark this thread as "resolved"?

First I gotta get the money. My good looks only take me so far anymore.

Taco Bell Is Fucking DisgustingTaco Bell Is Fucking Disgusting X 212,000

#369 5 years ago
Quoted from fosaisu:

Why is it that Taco Bell cannot make a commercial where it's food doesn't look like total dogshit? I say this as someone that would probably pick Taco Bell over McDonald's in a pinch, but c'mon guys.

I mean, it's a $1.00 burrito. The photographers aren't miracle workers.

Fine. Rubio's. Fish Taco Especial (adds guacamole):

Rubio's is legit-good for fast food Mexican. But now this isn't funny.Rubio's is legit-good for fast food Mexican. But now this isn't funny.

X 106,000 using their Taco Tuesday pricing

or

x 70,903 @ regular price

#376 5 years ago
Quoted from o-din:

I used to love Rubios as they had a cool salsa bar and good food, but at the one near us the prices went way up and the quality way down, so we don't go there anymore. Baja Fresh was another good one, but they are disappearing one at a time.
Still do Wahoos once in a while, but the new place Baja California blows them all away. And they stay pretty busy.
https://www.yelp.com/biz/baja-california-fish-tacos-fullerton-2

The Wahoos by me in Pasadena is now closed. Their rice/beans, supplemented with a generous helping of freshly squeezed lime and some cilantro, got me through some lean times in my 20's.

My local Rubio's is still solid. Franchise strength varies. Your dollar doesn't go as far there as it does other places, but they seem to have better ingredients than other fast food joints.

#378 5 years ago
Quoted from o-din:

It wasn't that hard to decide what tacos to get on the way home from work last evening.

How many of your 184,347.82 tacos did you eat last night and how many are you saving for later?

#380 5 years ago
Quoted from o-din:

I bought three with the possibility of eating two and saving one for later. But I ate all three.
It was good!

Does Pinside allow OPs to edit their thread titles?

I feel like this should now read: "$211,996.55 To Spend. What To Buy?"

Mods?

It was fun to get the Pinside notification about this thread.

Odin what made you dredge it up?

#388 78 days ago
Quoted from o-din:

Some dude just bought $250,000 worth of pinball machines on Pinside in a day and it looks like both parties won

Lol. Missed that.

I guess I need to spend some time on the forum tonight and get caught up on today's "news."

I don't know. That's why I turn to Pinside for all the answers.

Feels like this thread needs a poll. We've got you!

Quoted from o-din:

Poll's been active for 5 years, and the only one crossed off the list so far is move to New York and buy a Hellcat.

Damn. So it is...and I voted five years ago. Cambodia. How's that looking?
