With what we pay at the Von's down the street from us, I might have to hit up that stand.

Sucks having avocado tress and actually having to buy them doesn't it?

That's what started me on my mission. My property has one of the very old Fuerte trees and was always a great provider. Then one year it had none and I decided to plant other varieties so I could have them year round.

Well some years they were all very productive and other years not, but now finally I have a group of trees with a good crop and another group that is flowering like crazy. All that hard work is finally paying off.

Would you believe shortly after high school Billy Barty opened up a roller skating rink just a few blocks from my house?

#255 1 year ago

Creepy name for a roller rink, particularly now that we know what the proprietor looked like. If you had a shot of him sitting under the sign, that would be perfect.

More importantly, did you make it to "Metal Madness"? I can make out RATT and Metallica, should have been a fun show!

You're showing your age sir. billy Barty was an 'merican treasure!

Here he is in Skatetown USA if that will do.

No I never made it to any of the concerts there but there were a few pinball machines and I played them.

The other roller rink in town, the Galaxy had punk rock shows like Black Flag, TSOL, and Circle Jerks and that was more my style at the time.

eventually....eventually. Without my new house, I can't get all my babies in the same location anyway. Hence why i'd be willing to sell all, start over with the room to do it right.

Oh snap!

I just did a little research and that Metallica show at Billy Barty's was in 1982 when Dave Mustaine was still in the band and they world premiered Whiplash that night. I'm sure the local boys were tearing the place up.

And Motorhead too? Sheesh, me and my punk rock...

I remember seeing Rick Derringer at some hole in the wall bar in
Orange County in the late 70s or early 80s
wonder if that flyer was part of the "All-American" tour's promotion.

Was it at Ichabods in Santa Ana? I was at that show.

Unfotunately his band Derringer had recently disbanded and was not as good as the time before I had seen them, but it was still a good show.

I think you are right, sounds about right.
Who knows we might have been there together
unbeknownst to each other.
It was pretty jammed packed, like sardines, if I remember correctly
surely more than the fire marshal would have allowed.
And seem to remember Rick being late or about an hour delay to him taking the stage,
but that time is pretty much a blur.

The stage was right in the middle of the place on the left side as you walked in and the bar was a little further back on the right side. I was front center at the stage that night. Saw a few shows there, but the original Ichabods was a few blocks from where I live now and showcased a lot of bands in the early 80s.

Can't believe how good we had it with so many small venues in the area.

I'm not finding much info on the place and it became something else after Ichabods which was very short lived, and to tell you the truth I can't even remember where it was.

But there is a bit of info on the one near my house which is now a Burger King. But at the time it shared the same parking lot with a bowling alley and one of our favorite arcades, Dragon's Dungeon. It was quite a happening spot any night of the week.

but no real conviction or certainty with my memory

Well I can tell you it was either 1979 or 1980, because that is soon after the Derringer band broke up. But there are even no records of either show I saw him do. I can't think of any place in Garbage Grove that we used to see shows at. Google or the internet isn't going to help us at all figure it out.

But the first one was in Woodland Hills at a small theater with the band intact, probably mid 1978 and that show was smoking!

#271 1 year ago

You said garbage grove. I can't even remember all the punk bands that played at a Mexican restaurant in downtown Riverside. Long live the I.E. valley of the dirt people

No, my work week is now done.

Waiting on Nimblepin to get home or give me a call as his Total Nuclear Annihilation arrived today and I have not played one yet. He also mentioned something about fish tacos.

Living the dream. Oh well some other time, stupid work always getting in the way of fun.

I think I'm going to put a bad review on yelp that you don't work enough. LOL

Speaking of which, nimble was out golfing and got home late. We're gonna do it tomorrow. lol. No hurries, no worries.

If I hadn't spent 20+ years living in San Clemente where the last thing on all the surfer's minds was working, I'd probably still be working my own ass off.

Nothing like getting home from the slave box after a long day and your roommate and another buddy are on the balcony hanging up their wetsuits saying-

"You missed it dude, it was epic today!"

#281 1 year ago

For sure. One hour just waiting for a wave on the water is like 5 years of therapy. I definitely took a wrong turn somewhere between Albuquerque and Rancho Cucamonga. But have an exit plan. I hope it works.

#282 1 year ago

Waves are definitely epic down south.

Funny at 25 I tried to show some kids how I skated pools and fell in instead of dropped in and now at 46 this weekend I will take a long board and a 2 ft roller at OB any day. I have a nephew who is blessed to live in Oceanside and trashes almost everyday. Man I wish I could switch spots but still have my pins. I hope to one day be a 56 yr old beach bum with a bad ass garden. Every weekend my mom would take me to the beach and was raised very free and organic. I hope to get back one day. I had buddies that would do Mexico all summer for next to nothing. It's sad I sold out but I can recognize that and that's at least a start in a better direction.

#287 1 year ago

Truth is the glory days of So Cal beach life are more and more a thing of the past. From greedy developers knocking down all the old bungalos to build multi level condos, to water quality that will barely support marine life, let alone human. Even as recent as the 80s I remember clear blue water.

But it's busier than ever out there now. Just not the paradise I remember.

Honestly you should take your money and higher a chemist to make some old school blodder. In South America there are places that use natural psychologicas to help people. They say it's very useful to go on a spiritual quest to balance the soul. And then add in some pinball.

You've been keeping up with the show "Hamilton's Pharmacopeia?"

Best $2 (in my time) investment yo could make. Now where did that moody Blues record go....

#290 1 year ago

You ain't lying. All of CA is not at all what it used to be. I remember the 70's into the 80's as the best times that show cased this state for the beautiful place it is. At least in the southern part.

Nah, I'm just waiting for rotordave to give the go ahead to load up the old shipping container to NZ, and then all will be right with the world.

Talk aboot Mr toads wild ride.. That shit is crazy. 8 did learn a lot of things from it though. There is still 1 company in South Africa that produces quaaludes, and it seems PCP doesn't make you crazy and it's a media myth like reefer madness.

#294 1 year ago

Those waves are to big for my old ass, but beautiful. I only smoked a dipper once and didn't go crazy, but had cool orange visuals from the shadows of a tree and felt very heavy and sluggish.

Hockey game was very cool with some edibles. Could only imagine pinball and hockey with some visual stimulation.

Sounds good to me! I can load up the family and chop saw and we can get to building the Ford PINTO of gamerooms! (since Escorts are too highbrow for our tastes...)
Bring some lime trees with us open up a Farolito South and retire in style!

This threads great. Great picture of the pier before the damage. Down the beach at t street morning glories grew wild. So we got tasty buds, narly waves, rainbow sandals, and a plant that surfers have told me got them higher than any acid they dropped. San Clemente Dude. Only the water sucks nowadays compared to when Odin first moved here. Odin, I bought a Breakshot, so you can come by and play it sometime.

That's easy, open own pinball bar. Let the addicts support your habit, plus Beer always on tap.
