This thread is to document a Data East Tommy machine I'm doing for a fellow pinsider.
We recently decided to do a thread on this, so I didn't take any before shots, but I'm just getting started.
Current status, removing playfield parts.

We will be using alternative art cabinet decals from Retro Refurb, which will really improve the look of this machine.

I think these cabinet decals will look great on this machine. I had local vinyl sign shop laminate a gloss clear over everything.

Original wood rail was junk. Made new one from 1/2" thick oak, sprayed semi gloss black.

Yes, he did a nice job.
Starting to populate underside of pf.
Rebuilt flippers (waiting on new coils),
New stapled lamp sockets/braid, cleaned reflowed lamp boards. I'll mount all mechs before I'm ready for the harness.

I'm going to see if WPC pf supports will work in this machine.
These were bad design from the start.

Quoted from pinballjah:

Great game to restore, especially for a Who fan. Be interested to see what upgrades are added.

Pinsound (with shaker), pinwoofer, pinstadium lighting.

New inlane guides, flippers, posts, rubbers, and pop parts from Zitt.

And once pf is out, I'll get started on cabinet.
I'm going to replace the bottom panel rather than try to sand/clean this one.

Back in town, and back in shop.
I replaced all of the rollover micro switches, and placed the harness.
I use the lamp board connectors and stand up targets to guide me.
This has got to be one of the heaviest harnesses I have dealt with. Feels like 30 lbs.
I should have it hooked up tomorrow, and will start in on cabinet repair.

Just picked up these custom apron cards.
Printed on steel, nice touch on a restored machine. I'll include these on every game I do from here on out.
Made by local buddy djsolzs.
Hit him up.

Cabinet stripped of parts, ready to remove bottom panel.

20210124_112946 (resized).jpg20210124_112946 (resized).jpg
#45 3 years ago

My main reason to replace bottom panel is because these sag over the years due to moisture and the weight of the transformer.
But it also allows me to replace the destroyed plywood edge at bottom of machine.

I cut 3/4" up from bottom of cabinet edge. That will put me right at top of mdf panel.

Following... what filler did you use inside cabinet?

Inside cabinet I use this.
You must use primer/sealer on top of this before paint.

Quoted from pinballjah:

Would you recommend this to touch up on the exterior paint around the head, etc? Thanks.

No, I would not touch up, because sheen would rarely match. Paint it all or nothing.

Ive always loved the gameplay. The sound and the cabinet artwork always held it back in my opinion.
We will address both of those issues.
Im going to let the paint outgas for 3 days before applying the decals.

Quoted from ToucanF16:

Is this your first experience with the RetroRefurb decals? What are your thoughts?
Looks like you’re getting close.

Not first time, I used these on an Apollo 13 a couple years ago. I think they do a nice job, especially with filling in gaps for machines that decals are not available for. I highly recommend the clear layer added by vinyl sign company. Looks and feels great.

Looks great, your not putting back the Union Jack speaker panels?

New ones are being made by modfather.

#145 3 years ago

This was put on hold for couple weeks while I finished up my 9ball.
Did some final troubleshooting today with help from Athens95, and found a couple diode issues, and a cooked transistor.
Should have speaker grilles from Modfather this week, and be 100%.
