This thread is to document a Data East Tommy machine I'm doing for a fellow pinsider.
We recently decided to do a thread on this, so I didn't take any before shots, but I'm just getting started.
Current status, removing playfield parts.

We will be using alternative art cabinet decals from Retro Refurb, which will really improve the look of this machine.

Playfield restored and cleared by Neo.

I think these cabinet decals will look great on this machine. I had local vinyl sign shop laminate a gloss clear over everything.

Original wood rail was junk. Made new one from 1/2" thick oak, sprayed semi gloss black.

This project would be at a standstill if it wasn’t for at dallas_pin. He came through with a restorable PF that I sent to Captain Neo for restoration.

#10 23 days ago

Now that’s one beautiful pf....Looking forward to seeing more....good job...

#11 23 days ago

Great game to restore, especially for a Who fan. Be interested to see what upgrades are added.

Glad it’s being out to good use! Neo killed it!! Looks amazing

#13 22 days ago

Yes, he did a nice job.
Starting to populate underside of pf.
Rebuilt flippers (waiting on new coils),
New stapled lamp sockets/braid, cleaned reflowed lamp boards. I'll mount all mechs before I'm ready for the harness.

I'm going to see if WPC pf supports will work in this machine.
These were bad design from the start.

Stern Spike ones work on DE titles!

I just installed Stern Sam supports. I had to modify do some minor mods with elements of the door, but nothing major. Sounds like the spike may be better. Point is that it’s pretty easy and waaaay better.

Also, someone mentioned mods. Lots of great sound options, shaker, etc., but that aside, I liked the Union Jack adornments pictured

When I bought them he also sold the target stickers. Nice quality all around.

I like the translucent rubbers on my Tommy as well. Works well together.

#23 17 days ago

Those pops look great. I didn’t think they would, but they really do look great.

Pinball porn! Looking fantastic!!

The pops and rubbers are phenomenal! I can’t wait to see how this all comes together!

Most mechs and assemblies cleaned and mounted to pf.
Waiting on coil wrappers.

Looking to pull harness from old pf this weekend.

And once pf is out, I'll get started on cabinet.
I'm going to replace the bottom panel rather than try to sand/clean this one.

Populating top side of pf.
We will be getting the full Cliffy set of protectors, but he is swamped at the moment.

Those wrappers/other goodies look great! And the PF is coming together nicely

#36 10 days ago

Harness removed and cleaned (dishwasher). All micro switches will be replaced.
Relay removed before cleaning.

Since owner is going with stadium lighting, I see no reason to reinstall these spots, with the ugly wiring.

#38 10 days ago

That’s a great idea! DE light wiring is
God awful on my Tommy as well!

#39 10 days ago

Its like they made no effort to conceal any of it.

Back in town, and back in shop.
I replaced all of the rollover micro switches, and placed the harness.
I use the lamp board connectors and stand up targets to guide me.
This has got to be one of the heaviest harnesses I have dealt with. Feels like 30 lbs.
I should have it hooked up tomorrow, and will start in on cabinet repair.

New coindoor from Pinball Life.
$69! Includes pretty much everything. Even the damn lightbulbs.
Such a great deal.

Nice! Did the same along with a cabinet redo. Door is really a must do on a restoration. Did you see the guy who does the exchange on the ramps? You send yours and he sends some that have an almost mirror finish that is nice and not over the top. $150 for both. Thinking of doing it, but since your game is torn apart....

Just picked up these custom apron cards.
Printed on steel, nice touch on a restored machine. I'll include these on every game I do from here on out.
Made by local buddy djsolzs.
Hit him up.

Cabinet stripped of parts, ready to remove bottom panel.

20210124_112946 (resized).jpg
#45 3 days ago

My main reason to replace bottom panel is because these sag over the years due to moisture and the weight of the transformer.
But it also allows me to replace the destroyed plywood edge at bottom of machine.

Looks like the glass was shattered on this machine at one time.

I cut 3/4" up from bottom of cabinet edge. That will put me right at top of mdf panel.

#48 3 days ago

I checked that 3/4" measurement by drilling a hole at the edge.

Filler applied to inside of cabinet. I'll sand, prime, and paint the inside before I attach bottom panel to get clean paint line where the new unfinished mdf meets the sides.
