Going to start on cabinet today.

This era Williams has the heavy 3/4" plywood supporting the transformer, so no bottom sag here. I'm probably going to clean and sand, rather than replace this bottom. I'll see how well it cleans up.

Removing side rails takes some serious heat to remove. Work in 12" segments with light pull on a putty knife. Let the heat do the work, or u will bend a slight curve in the rail

Sanding thru that beautiful black paint applied over some pretty sketchy bondo work.
40 grit on orbital sander hooked to vacuum

This is the part I’ve been waiting for.

Me too!

Use disposable brush to apply xylene to rest of side rail tape to remove. Then scrape, and repeat. Comes off easily.
Using a heat gun now (without rail in place) will delaminate plywood.

So this machine is for your own collection? Looking great so far! Love that game.

#109 4 years ago

I am doing this with the intent to put in my basement. That can always change, if anyone interested. I restore machines on an almost constant basis, so selling one brings the next into my shop. And I only restore games that I want to own.

#110 4 years ago

Feel free to change it to my basement.

#111 4 years ago

Initial sanding shows me a way better cabinet than I expected. I will fill wood grain and prime tomorrow.
Time to hydrate..

Not since I had to sell half my collection to afford Stranger Things LE! Haha

I've been asked to show more detail of cabinet repair/finish. This particular box is in really decent shape, nice corners and little damage.
One spot under a rear leg has split here, so I apply Titebond wood glue while opening the split, and using low pressure, blow air into the gap to spread glue inside.

Then a tight piece of masking tape for an hour or 2 will make it ready for bondo.

I use spackling for filling grain. Use a wide blade and firm pressure on a 45 degree angle to grain lines.
This stuff is not strong enough for corners or large repairs, but for smoothing, it's great.

I'll let that dry for an hour, and use 220 grit on orbital sander to smooth.

I just did a cabinet corner repair the other day and used some glue syringes for the first time. Worked great to get to the really deep areas that the bottle can't reach. I like your air method, but figured I'd share my method as well.

Awesome thread and amazing progress.

#119 4 years ago

Thx. The glue syringes are a great idea.
After sanding with 220, the grain is filled.

Next step is applying a filler primer. This I'll block sand with 400 grit.

Is filler primer different than normal primer?

Quoted from Jjsmooth:

I wouldn't use Bondo on that corner, one tap during a move and it will come off. A two part epoxy resin will give a much more permanent fix.

How would you go about applying the epoxy without it being a runny mess?

#124 4 years ago
Quoted from Blackbeard:

Yes, it's a bit thicker, meant to fill tiny scratches. Easy to sand for smooth surface.

With the coarse surface, the Bondo will have plenty to adhere to.

#126 4 years ago

Since I didn't cut bottom off of this machine, I have the lower plywood edge to deal with.
I sanded and masked the cabinet bottom so I can repair this edge with Bondo.
This will have to be painted when finished.

Made a frame from scrap to give straight edge to push Bondo to.

Wrapped the frame with wax paper to prevent Bondo from sticking.

Cool idea I have not seen this before!

Using a sanding block, I can then sand back to a straight bottom edge, then prime and paint.
I am on the fence as to whether or not it's any easier than replacing the bottom and plywood edge, but it's an alternative.

Bottom masked, box sprayed with automotive single stage paint.
This color was matched from decal background color.

Why didn't you spray the yellow around coin door and a lot of the cab? Just not needed as decals cover?

She's a beaut, Clark, er, Jerry.

All covered by decals.

Haha. Thx.

Decal time. Trim excess off of decal, line up decal on cabinet, notch and tape one side of decal in place.
