With 2019 coming up, has anyone on here sign up for any of the races.

In April, they have Star Wars races down in Disney World.

Edit: got through the Dopey Challenge in January and just did the 3 Star Wars races this past weekend.

I must say, the Star Wars races are a must for anyone who loves Star Wars. I can’t wait to do it again next year. See below for my medals.

SIL is running the half at EPCOT this weekend.

    #3 5 years ago

My wife would be very interested in running Disney, however I’ve had to limit the number of races she is running in since she just finished running Berlin and Chicago and is entered to run in the Seattle marathon in a few weeks. Three marathons in 90 days just sounds insane to me.

    #4 5 years ago

I’m signed up for the Dopey in January and the Kessel Run in April.

I’m not a runner by any stretch of the imagination...just wanted to challenge myself.

I’m done with the 2019 Disney Marathon Weekend. My first 5k, first 10k, first half marathon and first full marathon.

I can’t move right now. First 3 runs were a lot of fun. The marathon today, I was pacing for 6 hours after 6 miles. Come mile 8, I lost all energy. I have no idea how I was able to force myself to finish the next 18 in the allotted time. I honestly thought I was going to get swept.

    #9 5 years ago

Grats!!! That’s awesome. I hope you iced the legs afterwards hehehe. I know the marathon is the ahieve, but the other medals look awesome too. How about the look of that 5k medal.

I assume the Dopey Challenge is for those like you who ran them all?! Lol

    Nice achievement, congrats!

    Yep...completed the Dopey Challenge.

I am totally paying for it. Just woke up...knees feel a ton better, but my feet are still in a lot of pain.

I’m not going to pretend that I’m a runner...I’m not...but I figure go big or go home. This is one and done for me. If I do the races again, it’ll be the 5k, 10k and half marathon...which I’m actually doing in April for the Star Wars races...I don’t need to do another marathon.

So is that 5k, 10k and two half’s? Dopey run is crazy, this seems to be close to that. I can do a half marathon but couldn’t imagine doing that over 4 days, respect and congrats!

Race weekend is 5k, 10k and half marathon.

The R2-D2 medal is a virtual half marathon...basically, it’s the honor system. The Kessel Run Medal is for doing the virtual half marathon and the half marathon.

I found the half marathon yesterday much harder than when I did the Dopey, and that had a full marathon. I was in a walking boot 10 days ago and had 2 cortisone shots in my heel the last 2 weeks. THEN, a few hours after the 10k my right knee flared up to the point that I couldn’t walk on it. When I woke up in the morning, I could walk on it, but it still hurt. So I ran the first 2 miles, then the knee couldn’t take it anymore. I ended up power walking the last 11 miles...I didn’t train at all to power walk. Just had to push through it.

And running with heel pain isn’t fun either. It’s now time for a 2 month break from long distance running. Before these races, the longest I ever ran was 3 miles and that was in 1996 when I was in high school. I want to do Dopey and Star Wars again next year. Need to heal up first.

Here’s a shirt I bought too. I love this thing. The Falcon is the front of the shirt.

I can't be the only one on here with interest in running on Disney...anyone else do it?

    #20 4 years ago

My first 10k, half marathon and full marathon were all at Disney (10k was land, the others were World). When I did my first marathon I did Dopey at the same time. I'm taking a break right now from them because they are so expensive. I plan on going back for Wine and Dine next year, and then Marathon weekend in 2022 (for the 50th anniversary of WDW). This is the first I've seen this thread, otherwise I would have posted earlier.

    #21 4 years ago

I’m guessing the Wine and Dine will be the first 50th anniversary race.

I’m skipping wine and dine next year to do NYC 2020 Marathon. I have no interest in doing NY, just seems cool being 2020. Plus, it will have me ready for 2021 Dopey.

    Are you doing Dopey 2022?

    #22 4 years ago

I ran the Disney marathon back in 2012 and finished 6th overall. For competitive runners, it's a different and kind of strange experience from what they advertise. It was mostly in the dark, very few spectators, and the parks were empty. Just kind of a weird race. I still enjoyed it, though.

    #23 4 years ago

    6th? WOW!!!

There were around 12,000 finishers in 2019...I was around place 11,600. Most of the race in the sunlight for me. 8,000 attempted Dopey...only 5,000 completed it.

IMO, I think what makes it enjoyable is that it’s not a serious race...not saying a marathon isn’t serious, but a majority of the runners aren’t good at running...I'm one of them.

On Sunday, I probably lost around 30 minutes on my half marathon time cause I stopped for pictures.

    #24 4 years ago

Good thread. My wife and I enjoy the Disney Races, I was perfectly Dopey for five years. It just got to be a bit like Groundhog Day with Disney not changing anything up. We gave it a break for a couple years but are planning to race the 2021 Dopey with my nieces. I also enjoyed the California races before they stopped for construction. So true what you say about the difference between the full and the half marathon, it’s night and day.

    #25 4 years ago

All the January races are sold out.

Last January, Marathon, Dopey and Goofy didn't sell out.

    Quoted from Trekkie1978:

    Are you doing Dopey 2022?

I haven't decided what I am going to do yet. I probably will do just the marathon (I've done a couple of Ultras, and Dopey is still very hard due to waking up so early so many days in arow).

Anyone run the marathon today? OMG!!!!! That heat and humidity today was unreal.

My wife and I are planning to sign up for the Goofy if we can get in. Reserved a hotel a week ago when we heard that there is a chance this year. We don’t have the pay to get in front of the line pass, so we will have to wait until the 27th. Good luck to those trying to sign up, should be fun.

    #33 2 years ago

Don’t think I’ll make any races in the next year but I have done a few of the full marathons at Disney in the past. Once my kids are a little older I would love to go back for some races. My wife said she would like to do the half marathon there.

I was registered for the 2020 Star Wars challenge that got canceled. Was going to run for my 50th birthday—ended up doing it here at home to mark the occasion, sigh.

Anyway, I still want to go back down and run a race but I’m going to let them go through a season before I bother with it. I want to see what changes they make (if any) before I commit the $$ to go. I’m also super bummed that I missed out on running SW, so I’m having trouble feeling motivated to pick a different one.

Star Wars was the best one. I geeked out so much that it felt like I never put a mile on the legs.

I don’t get why they are changing it. The wine & dine races were the surprise race each year.

The very least, they could’ve held onto Star Wars for 1 more year.

This is smart. I'm sure Florida is doing better than California, but Disney here in California is clearly having trouble getting back into the swing of things and I'm sure the first events will have some logistic issues to work out.

I used to run a lot of the races in California before they stopped doing them, and ran the WDW marathon once. They're such complex events logistically that I would probably wait until they get past a few before going all the way to Florida for one.

Went on it twice this summer. Next level immersion and fun! Easily my favorite roller coaster in all of Disney World or any other theme park. My 5 year old had the biggest smile on her face the whole time and was running and jumping around after with excitement about how awesome it was!

There is something about it that my body doesn't like. No other ride does it at WDW, not even Mission Space - Orange. But when I ride Galaxy, I get put into a bad place. Rode it last week for the 3rd time, and it was a bit better as I watched the track ahead of me as much as I could.
