So who’s everyone liking to win it all this year?

Germany. Who I'll be going for anyway, since U.S. is out

#3 5 years ago

Messi and Argentina for the win.

#4 5 years ago

I think Brazil will crush everyone if they can pull together as a team. What an amazing group of talent, even if Neymar isn't 100%.

#5 5 years ago

Which group is regarded as the "group of death" this year?

I'm picking the Germans to win it all.

#6 5 years ago

Saudi Arabia and Egypt in same group will be interesting. I’m rooting for a Saudi Arabia vs. Iran matchup if they can both sneak out of group play. Would be intense on many different levels given the current state of mid-east politics.

#7 5 years ago

Hoping the Argentines can finally pull it off again.

#8 5 years ago

It will be interesting to see the TV ratings in the USA for televised Mexico matches, especially in California and Texas markets. They might be higher than if the USA was actually playing!

Agreed, Messi is awesome and I would like to see him win one.

Bump for Iceland!!!

Iceland played with A LOT of heart, Argentina not so much.

Quoted from ImNotNorm:

Great game. I honestly felt Mexico ‘shelled up’ too early at the 60th minute but now that we see the final result, it paid off. A very heart filled win for Mexico - well deserved. I hope they cause a few more waves this WC.

#15 5 years ago

Felt quite a few of the supposed "favorites" took their opponents for granted. Lots of heart displayed by the underdogs! Bunch of great matches so far.

Messi has missed 5 or his last 10 PKs!!! Perhaps the coach needs to let someone else have a go for the next PK they get?!?!

England took care of business.....

I got to watch this match...while in Mexico!

Yes I was mostly surrounded by fellow non-Mexican resort goers but it was still awesome.

I think Belgium is a strong outsider for this one. Their build-up play was stationary and unimaginative at times. But they looked strong. And durable.

Russia too. Host nations usually do well. And they looked strong too. Although, both they and Belgium faced some of the weaker squads.

Germany vs. Sweden is going to be a killer match to watch.

I support Denmark and England.

Play on.

Columbia, red card, PK
Senegal up 1-0 over Poland.
that’s gonna be a cut throat bloody mess battle for the #1 & #2 seeds. I had Poland and Columbia going thru; but after today, no idea.

Group F is the Death Group....yikes!

Senegal wins and adds a little controversy into the mix

Mexico Baby! Representing North America!

that would be nice

Mexico Baby! Representing North America!

The announcer at the end of the game said it was "a historic win for the Central American side".

There's only 3 countries in North America, you wouldn't think it would be that hard to keep straight.

Is Mexico even considered part of central America? I thought not.

No, it's not.

Hence my comment about 3 countries in North America, Mexico is one of them.

Never seen anything like that injured Senegal player being waved in, jumping right on the ball, and scoring. Poor referee, it did for a moment look like it would be a harmless time to wave the player in, but definitely could have been more judicious on that one.

I was baffled by Germany's decision to not cross one corner kick into the box. What a bizarre tactic to do the short pass every time, would love to know what was behind that thinking. It even looked like they'd have a height advantage for possible headers, so doubly strange. They also looked way too casual like they were trying to let the game come to them: no sense of urgency until they fell behind. I still wouldn't count them out, I expect to see some batter strategies in upcoming games.

#35 5 years ago

Senegal....the ball started going the other direction when he was waved in but was quickly kicked back the other direction. Looked like the polish defender lost track of him on the side. I only saw a couple of replays but my question was whether he was onside or not. The goalie came way out to play the ball and missed, too. It was a crazy play! Shaping up to be a very entertaining Cup this year. Too bad USA not in the mix.

Spain and Iran looks like good match tomorrow. Spain is must win

#37 5 years ago

I going with the best player IMO, and that's Kevin De Bruyne and Belgium.
I really enjoyed the Portugal and Spain match. My top five picks:

Belgium
Portugal
Argentina
Germany
England

I’m starting to think that I’m the only American watching the World Cup this year.

#42 5 years ago

I would watch, but the games are on all day while I'm at work.

#43 5 years ago

You are not. But we are definitely in the minority. I can't get enough of it. Much less productive at work lately but hey, it's only every 4 years.

It really is unfortunate the USA didn't qualify. Usually this is an event even non-soccer people get behind. It's just not happening here without the USA team to ask questions about and root for. And even worse, this would have been easier for casual fans to see huge names like Ronaldo, Messi, Neymar & the England team.

Oh well, I'm still watching everything like most of the planet and enjoying every minute of it.

I love world cup. I'm watching or listening to most games, but not all. Still gotta work

#45 5 years ago

The parity so far has been interesting. I bet there's going to be at least one favorite that doesn't make it through. I'm worried it'll be Argentina. Croatia is going to be a tough one today, and I think it's a realistic scenario that it'll be out of their control in the final group game.

We're so fortunate to live in the age of Messi but imagine the knocks against him if they don't even make it out of the group stage.

I'm lucky enough to work from home so I've been tuning in, alot of great games so far. I cut my cable cord a couple years back so I have to watch it in Spanish on telemundo as the local air stations aren't televising it. My girlfriend came home yesterday and demanded to know why the tv has been left on the Spanish station for the past week. She even jokingly accused me of having some "latin slut" over during the day. When I told her I had been watching world cup in the mornings she rolled her eyes and told me "at least it's not anymore of your pinball nonsense".

I’ve been watching on Fox app through my iPhone at my work desk. Haha! Exact same as the TV broadcast

Argentina looked outta sort in 1st half. 2nd half the wheels popped off. If they don’t make it out of group play, it’s not on Messi. I would start with their coach. Then to the goalie. And then a number of other player before Messi takes his usual hits.

Kudos to Croatia. They played fantastic. Argentina lost their cool late in the game and Croatia kept playing hard. Very good game today! Can’t wait until Iceland takes the field tomorrow
