Turn right at the porti-John. Or come in the back gate. Glad I'm not hauling a trailer this year!

    Quoted from Mk1Mod0:

Or come in the back gate.

They had the back gate closed to entrance last night around midnight. I had to come up a technically closed road.

I suggest everyone get their cars here as early as possible. The Texas department of transportation is using the hotel lot to secure their vehicles over night. I estimate there are 40 of their large trucks eating up spots. That substantially reduces the number of parking spaces. Should be fine if you get here early.

I'm going to say that the hotel has some funking explaining to do this time.
Not having reserved two bed rooms because "FEMA" and "TXDOT" took all of them is fu*king bullshit.
I heard way too much "we don't have two bed rooms".

I get that FEMA may have a priority ... because it seems like the right thing to do; BUT, so much that you can't honor your reservations? FEMA doesn't have emanate domain to force the hotel to honor a hotel full of vouchers.
And IDK WTF they were thinking giving TXDOT priority over paying customers.

Let me state up front that I ordered a king bed room and got it...
but had I requested a two bed room I would have been "housed" at some other crown plaza in town... which WOULD NOT HAVE WORKED. I don't believe the hotel offer any apologies or compensation to people AT all.

I *know* that the hotel deliberately Didn't inform their customers for the hope that we'd have no choice but to accept "substitutions" rather than demand a refund. That is some shady sh1t... but they just didn't give a crap.

Keith - Let me state right now to plan for the future:
If this happens (to me) again without warning; I'll happily pack my game back up and take it home at 3pm when I learn of it.
Not really a threat; just a fact.

    #160 6 years ago

    Ok Buddy,

You did party hard on opening night Fri night.
Let's shut it down for the night, so we can go full speed on Sat.
    20171021_013930 (resized).jpg20171021_013930 (resized).jpg

Swap meet in the back parking lot Sat morning.
Then on to guest speakers, more pinball tournament action, free play area, music playing, etc. Boom!

    #161 6 years ago

Don't even try to tell me all pinball machines are basically the same.
These two machines definitely qualify as different.
Example: Raven doesn't have a long neck. Farfalla is lacking military firepower.

Sorry to hear about the hotel hassles you had, Zitt --could be worse though, you could be sitting this one out like I am and missing the chance to hang with your TX pinball friends (or you could need the hotel for FEMA reasons)

Everyone there should make sure they get some games in on Heads Up! (the 2 player battle game) on the P3. It's super fun.

    Enjoy!

    #163 6 years ago

Did JJP POTC make it to show?

I agree...I played a handful of games on the two linked P3 machines...it was very fun/frustrating all at the same time. An awesome format and the display was clear and easy to understand

Been an awesome weekend. Put my initials on GB, Lexy Lightspeed and a few others. The real players must have stayed home.

    Was a good weekend.

    #176 6 years ago

Good fun for the boys and I. Thank you to all of the organizers, volunteers and people who brought games. I particularly enjoyed the Genie from Sun King, The Walking Pro from fish 1975tx, and the Star Wars from Joystix. My middle son was fixated on Galaga all weekend and the youngest played Xbox all weekend. That's the great variety of the Houston show in a nutshell. Despite the hotel really not putting its best foot forward this year, the show overcame and it was a great time.

Lastly, the Saturday night band, Consotium of Genius was perfect! They totally rocked the house for all ages

Well done from me as well. At the airport now with weax delays galore. I hope everyone gets loaded out safely. As far as the hotel goes, I think the elevators had a software upgrade. They were very fast and smooth and no one got stuck!

    Quoted from Nevus:

Hands down. Phenominal band and really fits in well with the spirit of HAAG. I hope they return next year for sure, glad they had them in the main room.

I agree. They will get through the construction issue next year. I like how laid back that hotel is, and gosh the elevators were great this year. Noticeable difference from years past.

Very cool that SunKing brought his Alien pinball machine.
Definitely was one of the highlights of this years Hou Arcade Expo for me.
    Find Jonesy!
Note: Harder to accomplish when drinking is involved, but was fun trying.
    Jonesy_cat-Alien (resized).jpgJonesy_cat-Alien (resized).jpg

Genie played well, and was like a tank in the tournament area.
No breakdowns over the weekend for Gottlieb Genie or Gottlieb Joker Poker.
Not bad for two machines from late 70's that are almost 40 yrs old.

    #182 6 years ago

Anyone play the Super Strike stand up arcade game in the free play area?

It used a cue ball for a bowling ball, had a wooden lane about 1 ft long with alignment arrows on it, and a video screen that would show the ball going down a lane and knocking down the bowling pins. You could push 2 buttons to put some hook on the ball.
After bowling/rolling the ball on the lane into the machine, it would return the ball to you for your next shot.
    253 was my high score.

Ahahahahahahaha!! I just tried to login, and realized that as a result of my antics at HAAG, I have now been crowned as the 'PartyKing'.

It's an honor I will strive to uphold in the coming years.

Oh, and I think my favorite game from the show was the beautifully restored and maintained Joust. I didn't get any good pics of it, but it was a shining example, and a TON of fun to play against someone head to head. Speaking of that, we also has some really fun drunken games on the P3 playing head to head.

    #185 6 years ago

Another legendary HAAG show in the books! Damn, do we know how to party! Thank you everyone who brought a game or attended, as well as the dedicated showrunners and volunteers that bring it all together each year! I think we had one of the best lineup of games to-date. Gotta agree with PartyKing that the Joust pin was gorgeous and a blast to play! I want one!!

I wanna give a shout out to a buddy who is not here on Pinside, but he brought 60 arcades (yep, you read that right!). Thanks Aaron!

So great to see all of the folks from Dallas, Austin, Corpus, San Antonio, and of course, our great friends from Louisiana, as well as others from out of state! Already looking forward to next year!!

    And now onto TPF 2018!!

Looks like everyone had a great time as usual. Couldn't justify the travel from Seattle for both Houston as well as Dallas so I had to make a hard choice. I miss my Houston buddies but I hope to see y'all in Dallas before too long.

Yep! It was my wife's favorite game of the whole Expo. She made me play it several times and she broke 200. If you casually lay a hand on the hook button, you can really mess an opponents shot up!

I'd probably have to pick Joust Pinball has my favorite for the weekend.

    #189 6 years ago

I didn’t do a good enough job advertising it, but we actually had a side tournament on joust Saturday night. It was a ton of fun! I agree, that machine was beautiful, and an absolute joy to play. Tim P did a great job with that game.

Others I snapped with a ColorDMD installed. WCS94 had a beta test file installed. damn, I totally didn't even see that f-14, alien room.
Is this where they hold the expo every year, or does the venue usually change?

The venue has not been changed in many years. Next year might be at a new venue.

    #197 6 years ago
    Quoted from PinballManiac40:

I know people were frustrated this year with the construction right at the entrance to the hotel, hurricane refugees, and Texas department of transportation issues. That said, all of those issues should be concluded for next year.

The hotel is pretty laid back. No one turning off your machines at the stroke of midnight or looking at what brand of beer you are carrying in your hand to see if you bought it from the hotel. Those seem like small things, but part of the fun of HAAG is its party atmosphere so I hope that if it moves it is to another laid back venue...that’ll let the party continue till 3am.

It’s nice having the run of a hotel. We have that at the current location (just had a lot of peculiar events this year complicating matters).

    #198 6 years ago

yeah, seemed like there were a ton of those harris county highway trucks all over the parking lot. Kind of a pain to find parking, one of there trucks was taking up four spaces.

    #199 6 years ago

I want to take a moment to publicly thank the many individuals who helped make the tournaments at this years show a success. Tournaments of that size and scope involve a ton of moving parts (figuratively and literally), and it truly requires a community effort for it all to come together.

Jesse Smith, Austin Knight, Marcus Trevino, and Brian Foytik for serving as defacto techs throughout the tournament. We all owe you a great deal of gratitude for keeping the games running.

Dick Curtis for providing the scorekeeper tablets, running the kid’s tournament, and for donating an insane amount of his time as volunteer.

Shannon Curtis for creating and donating the Kid’s tournament trophies

Double Danger pinball for donating the tournament plaques.

Rebecca Cook for manning the registration booth ALL DAY on Friday. That was a huge help.

Colin MacAlpine for lending his experience and expertise as assistant tournament director.

Chris Brooks for loaning his projector. (I still have it, btw!)

Austin Knight for loaning his wifi hotspot. It certainly came in handy when the hotel wifi became flaky.

Karl DeAngelo for supporting the tournament from afar with his amazing Never Drains software.

Brad Berryman, Tim Poffenbarger, Colin MacAlpine, Travis Lancaster, Dave Williams, Marcus Trevino, Chris Low, Aaron Sanders, Matt Quantz, Austin Knight, Brian Foytik, and Leon Moncla for bringing games to use. Obviously this is the most critical part of the whole operation, so thank you!!

Thanks to everyone who volunteered to scorekeep!

A final thank you to Keith Christensen for the support and trust he put in me to run the tournament!

    #200 6 years ago

Agreed with the above. Was a great run tournament that was a lot of fun. Thanks for your efforts as the TD.
