Just a quick note about the tournament copied from the Florida Pinball Forum:

We are looking for volunteers to enter scores at APE.

The Main and Classics Tournaments at APE will be using the latest version of the pinball score-keeping system from "It Never Drains". We are thrilled and very thankful to have an opportunity to use this software. Scores are kept using handheld tablets. Players can monitor scoring data in near real-time on their smartphones. The software also keeps track of the waiting lines for games using the "queue" system. Players will be able to move around rather than playing musical chairs and be able to keep track of their place in line using their phones. Bring your chargers!!

We are looking for some volunteers to help keep score and enter players into the queue. As a reward for your efforts, scorekeepers will be awarded three entries for an hour of score keeping or seven entries for each two hours of score keeping. Entries can either be used for Main or Classics play.

This system is set up to mirror the entry fees for the tournaments. $10 buys three games in the Main Tournament or three games in the Classics. We are introducing a new option to the APE tournaments; $20 will buy seven games in the Main Tournament or seven games in the Classics.

If you are interested, contact me via PM or volunteer at the show. I have a schedule that I can fill out. Please forward this message as you see fit.

Proud to support this event by putting my CFTBL on display... first time I've ever done anything like this.

Great! Glad to hear there will be a CFTBL there. I will probably be too busy with the tournament to play it though. Have fun at the show!

Enjoyed the show. Really nice to see all the effort that was put into it. Maybe I could bring in a Pin or 2 next year.
Anyways, the machine I enjoyed the most was this one

Just wanted to say that I have attended several pinball shows in FL over the years with good intentions to play in the tournaments, but never did because of long lines to the machines (and no patience on my part). I'm happy to report that I finally played in a tournament this year. I'm not so happy that I sucked at it big time, but it was fun to compete (and choke) against the best players in the world. Congratulations and thanks to John and Dan for their hard work in implementing this new and efficient (no long lines!) system at the APE show!

Glad you enjoyed the Joker Poker. That is my machine.

You are welcome! It was a lot of work and a lot of fun. I didn't get home last night until 4:30am after packing up all our games, computers and video equipment. I had to pull over into a McDonald's half way home and take an hour nap. The tournament worked out great, but there is always room for improvement. It was great to have some heavy hitters from out of town including Bowen. Watching him kick butt was really a sight to see. Getting to Kobiashi Maru on the first ball in the Finals was awesome. The Florida players put up a great fight; we have a lot of great players and great people down here. Bowen is a great sport and ambassador of the game. He helped out scoring and using the fancy new software and gave helpful tips to other players.

You can't talk about APE without mentioning that Marcel and Dilayla did an amazing job of setting up the show for success. Those two along with their support staff worked their butts off. Being at the casino was kind of cool too. I love looking out the window and watching the dogs racing. Not to mention plenty of free parking and decent food on site. It was also great to see the Project Pinball booth set up in its full glory in a prominent spot just inside the entrance.

Looking forward to next year.

Anyone play Lexy Lightspeed and talk to Gerry at the show? Would love an update.

I was so busy with the helping run the tournament that I only had a chance to play two pins all weekend outside of the tournament room. One of them was Fleet Jr. and the other was Lexy Lightspeed. Lexy Lightspeed was pretty cool. I enjoyed playing it although I am not a video pinball type person. I can't stand any virtual pin or even Pinball 2000, so I am not the right person to ask this question. What I can say it that I would take LL in a heartbeat over any virtual pin or Pinball 2000. The way the flippers and slingshots hover over the display is really clever and has a certain retro feel to it that I can't explain except that it was really cool.

Fleet Jr. was also really cool. Thanks to Jeff for bringing it.

I did. Cool concept, that is, to be like a console video game system and be able to swap out the upper playfield and change the theme of the lower playfield just by switching out the video. It's cool how the slingshots and flippers hover over the screen/playfield (as they must because the technology isn't here yet to have them pass through). My only gripe is that because one cannot anchor any playfield parts in the screen, all the action is in the upper playfield beyond the screen, which makes every shot a long shot. I didn't have a chance to ask, but my assumption is that future games will include targets/toys/features in the lower playfield, that will need to rest on top of the screen, much like the flippers and slingshots do.

The APE Show once again this year exceeded all my expectations. Marcel and Dilaya are simply the best. Thank you both for all your blood, sweat and smiles.

And I also REALLY appreciate the time and effort John and Dan put into the tournament this past weekend. The software implementation was super and made scoring, and scoring keeping, fast and efficient. The queuing system likewise was a BIG improvement. As everyone has already said, this was the first tournament that did not require us as players to wait in long lines all day.

Having a Classics and Main tournament also really helped to cut down on wait times, and allowed the tournament directors to offer 12 different machines to play. Having Bowen Kerins attend and play in the tournament was another wonderful thing.

Yes, I believe this is the plan.

That was the nicest Tron I've played. I really wish I was the winner. Great taste in the mods. They looked like they were factory and it was an LE. I don't know how you could of let that beauty go!

It goes to say it's common knowledge to anyone who follows the PAPA tutorial series what a great player Bowen is. I always wondered how much editing goes into those videos or how many takes or games it took to hit the breakout game that gets released. I looked up how many entries he played at the Ape tournament and when you look at the history, his first 5 games were high scores that put him at the number one seed for the finals. Amazing to think the way those games were set up and how quickly and consistent he was able to secure the number one seed. After seeing that I'm convinced he just shows up and plays a game and records the tutorial. Impressive! Glad he made it down, great show all around and it was really nice to be right at the casino/dog track if you wanted a little break from the show. I've never been at a smoke free casino, what a difference!

Why? You selling? As you well know, been there and done that.

Thank you for the props! I will miss it. It was just time. I had it for 3 years and it was time to rotate something else in.

Some news for anyone who played in the Classics tournament at APE 2016: The points calculation has been corrected and the tournament was awarded a TGP of 100%. This means all of the point values went up 20+ percent from the original points. Check out the points here:

Nice. Figured they would get around to it eventually. The 2x component for 4 player match play makes a big difference.

Thanks.

I'd like to see the APE show move north to maybe Tampa, Orlando or Jacksonville. I was really turned off by the $320 gas prices I paid in Boynton beach. First impressions of south Florida weren't impressive.

I know the the show has been cancelled for 2016 but will support it if it ever resumes.

#76 2 years ago

The APE is a South FL show. FPF is Orlando/Central FL and JAX is North FL. Works out nice.

I seriously doubt APE would move north.
