I have joined the Dark Side. I was offered to buy these forever ago and I guess I held off ling enough because they asked me to take them for free. I am giving the Surf Champ to my brother-in-law aince he does not have any games. The 4 Roses I am keeping. Neither works. The Surf Champ turns on but thats all it does. The 4 Roses just looks pretty and that's all. I have never really worked on an EM so this will be interesting.
Look at that manual from 1962. It was like opening a treasure map!

Can someone tell me how to lift the playfield on 4 Roses? There's a thingy in the way...

Very nice! Both cool games.

If you decide to sell Surf Champ, please let me know.

#3 9 years ago

Nicely done-a couple of really enjoyable projects there

#5 9 years ago

Please forgive me for asking this. But there seems to be no power switch on 4 Roses... ?

#6 9 years ago

LOVE the Surf Champ!!

It is good to see two new followers join the EM Darkside! We only get stronger with every new member!

Those are some great looking games. The surf champ is going to need a quarter or a fuse. The ax relay is also a major pain point, but you might get lucky.

I have never even seen the four roses, love the art.

#9 9 years ago

Those early WMS pins power up by either coining up or hit the left flipper button.
You need to remove the screws along each side rail that hold the playfield down.
Early 60s EM pins power off by firmly tapping on the underside of the Cabinet,
to trip a weighted relay switch (kinda like a tilt relay)

bump switch on the bottom. Some folks retro-fit a later style push button in the usual place underneath.
Nice score for the price!

What an interesting flipper/outlane configuration on the 4 Roses. I've never seen that before.

Enjoy,

I am very excited about the 4 Roses. I am 26 and it is 52, twice as old!

#13 9 years ago

Plays beautifully. Only a few things not working!

Surf Champ is one of the best Gottlieb 4 players IMO. Congrats!

#15 9 years ago

That four roses looks fun! Lots of stuff to hit!

Surf Champ....I've worked on two and I don't know why, but it was a tough one to get just right. Can't remember if it was the AX/BX relays or just the 16 score reels!

#16 9 years ago

Very nice score! Surf Champ is a classic one of my favorites.

#17 9 years ago

Free is awesome! Well, you've done something that I've never done in all my years of being an EM pinhead. I have never played a Williams "4 Roses". That game will be superb with a little TLC.

#18 9 years ago

Love the artwork on that 4 Roses. Enjoy!

#19 9 years ago

Thanks guys, it is killing me not to start diving in but I really want to give these two the love I think they deserve. I am currently working on 3 other projects that I need to complete before I really get going with these.

Here is what is currently wrong with 4 Roses as I see it.
No lights at all on the playfield. Left flipper doesn't work. Two pop bumpers don't work.

The rotating target circle in the center plays perfectly and the two saucers on either side really really surprised me. As soon as the ball hit the metal plate at the bottom of the saucer, they dissappeared. This game has 2 freaking subways in it. I am new to EMs but for a 52 year old game this thing was way above its time.

They're called 'gobble holes' and were popular on games in the 50's/60's.

That is a perfect name for them. When the ball dissappeared I about jumped out of my shoes. Just gobbled em up.

4 Roses IMO, was actually a pretty decent game. I've had 3 of them over the years, played a few others. It seems to have fallen in the period where Wms cared about their art work, nice playfield. Yours appears to have a very nice backglass, and amazingly, a center plastic that is not cracked or broken. First one I've seen like this.

I think the game lacks some popularity for 2 reasons: 1) The ball can not be trapped for a precision shot, and 2) The earned specials require a sacrificed ball. The rotating target special is obtained by completing both sequences, which is very difficult, much like the "All-Rollovers" Special on Gtb Sweethearts and North Star. I never accomplished it even once. No matter how well "Dialed In," I think this game commercially was too tough to beat, and never developed a following.

The game found a new home as I received another of more personal desire in trade. If I had this one again, for a little excitement I'd jump together the advance bumpers at the top with one of the rebound rubber switches below them to pick up the pace of both sequences. You can always remove them harmlessly if you don't like the results. I just happen to think the advance sequences need a little help.

Very nice acquisition, and you can't beat the price!

Well I have a Williams Touchdown (1967) EM

Surf Champ is one of the best gottlieb multiplayers in a decade full of great ones.

4-roses no idea, looks kind of oddball.

#25 9 years ago

You are one lucky bastard! Pins just seem to fall into your lap! Nice catch!

Surf champ.

Played one game, then the round wheel things just kept spinning I got the one on the bottom of the playfield to stop but the bottom one keeps spinning and that's all.
Also the backbox score reals are stationary. I have yet to drill the lock.

4 Roses

Yay, easy stuff. Left flipper has a wire loose. The broken pop bumper just has a broken metal thingy (honestly can't remember the name right now). And a burnt fuse on playfield lights. The 10 score real only works when resetting.
Several switches I hear a mechanical click but no score.

Is that what I think it is in that tube? Looks a lot like Mercury.

One of your score reels isn't making it all the way to 0 if it started when you went to play again. I struggle with this same issue on my Surfer.

Either that or the game over sequence isn't completing because of the AX/BX replay.

I think you're really going to like 4 Roses, a real player's game. Not sure about Surf Champ but hard to go wrong with a game designed by Ed Krynski.

4 Roses is a beautiful game with lots of great features. I was born in '62, and it seems that is the one year of that era that eludes me as far as pinball machines are concerned. But time is on my side. I will find one! Congrats!

I have had one EM and I loved the sound of them. Great reliable games.

Thanks, I have been doing research on how to get this guy running again and the three spots on the bottom of the playfield bother me so I have done research on Vid's playfield restore thread.

Yeah, metal flipper scrub is not pretty, but what can you do? The machine is over 50 years old! I recommend removing the metal bats and replacing them with plastic. You can send the old bats to me, and I will try to find a use for them.

#37 9 years ago

I searched for 3 years for a nice 4 Roses, and you get one for free?! Congrats, really one of my favorite games aesthetically, great game play too. I have one I'm restoring now, it has a beautiful playfield and glass, cabinet is pretty nice too. I have not had too much play time on it yet unfortunately as I tore right into restoring it.
Yours looks pretty nice, especially for the price! Surf Champ is a pretty fun multiplayer, but IMO cant hold a candle to the 4 Roses, you did well by keeping that one. Once you get that play field stripped, polished and waxed, those blemishes might not bother you so much, there are so many nice things to look at that they probably won't distract your eye as much. Removing those ugly woodgrain jet bumper protectors will improve the look too. I love these early williams games that you can't trap on, it makes the game more challenging.
