I came across this almost mint 1989 Williams "Police Force" Prototype by pure luck yesterday not knowing that it was a prototype when I picked it up (I'm new to pinball). I have looked all over the internet and cannot find any info on this prototype or what exactly they were used for. I do know they where originally designed to be Batman themed but was changed last minute. Any info on this thing would be helpful as it appears to be the only known prototype to the internet and I don't want to mess it up if it's anything special as it is immaculate and untouched!

I have attached a pic of the Serial Number sticker and the playfield, it matches in multiple places all over the machine.

    Nice find

    Generally, the way production happens:

    1) Whitewood, the game without any artwork, used for designing the layout of the game.
    2) hand-built prototypes / engineering samples (very low, could be 1-5 games), used for finalizing everything for production
    3) Production prototypes (about 10), first off the production line, used for testing
    4) Production samples (usually about 100), used for testing on location and early release to distributors
    5) Regular production run

You have a production prototype. Going from the serial number, you probably have #6 of 10 (but if those other 9 still exist, is anyone's guess).

ForceFlow Wow, that's crazy. Are prototypes generally sold to the public or do they end up somewhere else?

Anything can happen to them, really. Sometimes employees ended up taking them home, sometimes they got sold. If prototypes ended up not being much different than regular production games, sometimes they ended up on location somewhere like any other production game.

GobbleHole I've never seen a prototype one before, has a lot of unique characteristics to it. Where did you see it at?
