Hello,

I've added a remote battery to my 1982 Bally Mr. and Mrs. Pacman motherboard like ive done a few times before. It seems to work fine, but the batteries seem to drain real fast. Brand new batteries are barely lasting 2 weeks??? This is the 3rd set in a month. I checked the voltage on the batteries before they are put in, all at 1.6 volts each...with in a week, they are all at 1 volt and its gonna stop working soon.

Any ideas?

What brand are those batteries? I don't recognize them. If they're from a dollar store, use something else. Dollar store batteries are junk.

#3 8 years ago

Harbor Freight...they are garbage. But, i figured even they should last longer...

Your RAM is not a low power RAM as needed for that board. You'll need to replace it. U8. Better to replace it with anyPin NVRAM Battery Eliminator and do away with the battery all together.

ok, so, the RAM chip thats in there is drawing too much and thats killing the battery? I've never had this generation of Bally before. My early Sterns never had an issue like this.

I've never heard of anyPin NVRAM before, but they seem cool. I'm not infront on my game right now, is U8 a socketed chip? how easy are these things to put in (anyPin NVRAM). Do they need to be soldered?

Borygard is right. You have 2101 ram in there. Those work like a 5101 but consume more battery current are not intended to be battery backed up.

If you want to do a no battery NVRAM solution, I have them that work in you game for $14

Is that a 2101 you are using as opposed to a 5101?

2101's are pin compatible with 5101's but are a super power hog and will eat batteries fast as you are seeing.

Check and make sure that should not be a 5101 instead. If so, put a 5101 in a you'll be fine. OR remove the batteries, toss the 2101/5101 and put in a NvRAM and be done with it forever.

LOL Andrew types faster than I do.

Yes, it's socketed. anyPin in this board is very simple. No soldering needed.

Thanks everyone (Andrew, Rob and Patofnaud)! I took a closer look and it is a 2101! Thanks for explaining to me. I love this website, really makes learning about pins easy and fun.

Ok, another question now. I'm potentially selling this game today. I want to get the anyPins going forward, but trying to make sure I can complete the sale today.

I have a 1980 Stern Cheetah. I checked the RAM and its the 5101. So....can i just take that out, swap into the Pacman and be done? Then, order the anyPin and stick in my Cheetah?

Thoughts?

Thanks again!

Yes.

Be sure to install the chip with its notch going in the same direction as the one you remove.

Yes. Just hang on to the 2101 for troubleshooting boards, and so on, on games where you don't care about the backup function. They are nice and robust compared to the 5101.

Cheetah is mpu 200 game. It uses two 5101 rams (that need to be a matched pair). You would need two individual nvram adapters.

Thanks again all!

And thanks Ken, ill hang onto it!

when you say "Matched pair"...does it matter that i'm getting rid of the one today...as long as i buy two nvram adapters its ok, right?

There's a combo NVRAM adapter here, which would be a bit less expensive than two separate NVRAM modules: http://www.pinitech.com/products/stern_mpu200_ram.php

Correct.

Remove the 2101 from Ms Pac VIDIOT board..
Remove 5101 from MPU-200 and put it in the Pac and sell it.
Then buy 2 NvRams for the MPU-200 and hang onto the 2101 for troubleshooting, and the second 5101 for spare parts.

Use Pinitech's MPU-200 RAM adapter. I have them and would be happy to include one with your anyPin order.

With it you'll remove U8 and U13 on the MPU, install the MPU-200 adapter with the anyPin in it at U8, done.

i changed the RAM chips and i noticed a few things. Mainly the sounds of the pop bumpers and sling shots have changed. They seem older like chimes now. No biggie. Also, the Extra ball now doesn't seem to work. It lights up, but doens't award it...weird. maybe a did switch?

And a few lights seem to operate differently.

Any thoughts?

Use the coin door button to change the sound options. These settings where scrambled when you changed battery backed RAM. The sound options will be the last 3-5 audit settings. Set them all to '03'.

U prolly have to go thru and do all the settings again...

#24 8 years ago

Ill do that...

Also, what happens if i put the 5101 in Cheetah...would it work? or does it need two 2101's?

Cheetah and all MPU-200 games needs matched speed RAMs at u8 and u13. If you have a 450ns ram at u8 and a 150ns ram at u13 you may experience odd problems. Most notable is some sound effects get wonky. Certain audits may also fail to save correctly with mismatched speeds.

I always recommend using matched pair of rams with the same datecode / brand imprint on MPU-200 games.

The 2101 would also just drain out the batteries in Cheetah.

I also sell tested good PCD5101P starting at $2.75 each.

Just did the sound adjustments, game sounds great! better than before at "3" with the background effects. honestly, never messed with that stuff before.

also, i have the original book and read that xtra ball is at number 16 and 17 so i did the adjusements there and it seems to be working fine as well.

The weird lamps were also a result of how the extra ball worked and one lamp was just loose...lol.

I will be ordering the anyPins for Cheetah very soon! Thanks again all for your time and knowledge!
