I can't figure out why more people don't count Stellar Wars up there with many of the early 80s machines. This is a great machine that is well balanced and fun to play. I get that the artwork isn't the best, but overall, the game is great. I thought it was probably time to create a club for people who appreciate a machine that Steve Ritchie says is still one of his favorites.

I've documented some repairs I did to my machine, including some playfield touch-ups and a game play video here: https://canoncitypinball.blogspot.com/2018/12/1979-williams-stellar-wars-pinball.html

Lets open a discussion of what you like most about this game.

Picked one up cheap, thought about restoring it.

Missing blackglass, pf glass, displays, boards, cabinet is tweaked.... Unfortunately I am giving up on it. If anyone needs a part I may have it.

I'd be interested in the whole thing if only you were closer. Anybody heading towards Illinois that could haul this? Mike

That is too bad. That many missing parts, it is probably of more use as a parts machine now. There is a playfields wanted thread here on pinside. You may find some interest there. If you had a rottendog board in your firepower, you may be able to get it up and playing by borrowing some parts.

#5 5 years ago

I have a couple of mostly working boards on ebay right now if anyone is looking to restore this machine. I'd certainly give you a pinside discount.

Started to work on my center insert.

I've created a new art filed of the outer and inner art. I'll put the outer on white decal paper and the inner on clear. Here are some pics of me prepping the insert.

The other day I noticed the leaf switch behind the Left 3-Bank Drop Targets was missing wires so the switch never closes when the ball hits it. I tried wiring the correct wires to it based on the switch matrix and it now registers but now the game no longer awards you the letter T no matter how many times you hit all the drops. If some one could snap a few good pics of the wiring for the drop target bank and post it, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Hope this helps - PS if anyone knows how to replace the center decal/mylar - please let me know

Are you talking about the large circle? I replaced mine with some custom made decals. I made it in two layers. a clear layer and a white layer.

I just picked one up and even though the PF is pretty worn it plays good. I'd like to replace the decal on the center insert. canoncitypb would you be willing to print one and mail it to me?

Thanks!

Looking to diagnose a ball release coil. If need be what kind of transistors are on the driver board? I think the pinwiki said I could use 1n4004 for the coil diode.

AH, I did read someone said if you replace the transistor, to also do the pre driver and transitor. I would then also probably do the coil diode or at least test it.

Gahh the drop targets on this era of Williams games is such a pain in the rear.. Some were not registering when they knocked down. So I tore mine all apart tonight and deep cleaned them

Mines coming along nicely though. Playfield is blown out bad but she plays really nice TBH. Maybe Outsidedge will hardtop this one eventually.

I had some really gross colored GI and moved some stuff around to make it more friendly when playing in a dim room. Pics before and after, what do you guys think??

Joined the club. Backbox lights come on flippers did work. Sat for the past 15 to 20 years. No acid damage at all surprisingly. Got it for $300. One plastic piece cracked and one warped, otherwise good shape. Will go through tomorrow to see what’s going on.

Thank you! Popped up on Offerup today. Seller was asking $800 and he didn’t know anything about pinball. I offered $300 and he said he would take it if I picked it up today.Yeah it’s missing. Good thing I got a bag full of pinballs. Was surprised my wife let me get it and she’s excited for me to get life back into her. Widebodies are just too cool.

I didn’t post up. So the repair was interesting. The kick out coil lug was grounding out to the metal screw in the pf. This was blowing the fuse.

Anyone look at their coil to make sure it isn’t touching the screw?

Recently picked up an "in-progress" stellar wars playfield which we intend to finish and swap into our stellar wars. Its had additional inserts added into the captive ball lane, which I saw in some photos of an HSA playfield restoration a while back.

Just curious if anyone has seen this mod in action somewhere...and what people were doing with these inserts... adding some chase lights when the captive ball insert is lit? Something else?

We can figure something out I am sure, just curious as to what others have done with a mod like this.

Hi Guys, I just joined the club. Picked up a Stellar Wars and although I am a ways off from starting a restore I am researching what I need. It looks like the center circle graphics are an issue, I think mine are half gone??center graphicscenter graphics

I see by other posts that most people have worn centers and that there may be a printable graphic floating around. Can anyone send me a link?

That looks like a great mod. Its a strange area of blank wood on the otherwise painted playfield. Are most people just leaving it as-is or adding some graphics to it? It seems like a great spot for some kind of lazer beam graphic or something.

I noticed these guys changed the playfield a little bit by adding 9 lights under the captive ball area. I wonder if its just lighted or the lights go on as the ball goes up the track, that would be cool.

I've only seen a couple posts on here, it might be worth reaching out to HSA to see how they went about doing that. Was the playfield constructed in that way? Or was this done afterwards with a CNC router?

I'd love to figure it out and create something similar for mine. But im not sure the right way to go about it.

#36 2 years ago

Those inserts are not present on un-modified games. They would have cut new holes for the inserts and added them in. Clean job, and looks pretty cool, but definitely a later modification

I picked up a playfield that had that modification done it it as well. I'm still not quite sure what to do with those lights. We have setup (as a test) a little bit of aduino code that could activate them as chase lights when the captive ball shot is lit... other than that I'm not sure how we'd work it into the game.

Thanks in advance for the help.

I have been just putting white LED's in everywhere from my stock. I use cool white as most games like warm white and I had a bunch of cool whites left over from a big buy, plus it seems to work in the theme.

I have a question also. While putting in a LED, I noticed the rubber goes literally right on top of the bulb, it touches and it seems really strange, so I am wondering if my rubber is in the wrong place. Here is what mine looks like under the plastic, can someone post a pic of theirs?

I don't have a kit to suggest, but I think I modeled my color selection after one of the TNT youtube videos. I think it was mostly this one, but I did make some changes.

Hey guys, I was wondering about lighting and posts. My Stellar Wars came with all blue posts, but I notice that the original flyer shows red posts and guides everywhere.

I am experimenting with lighting using the under-post lights from Comet and I am going to try a below the drain strip light and I was curious what others are doing.

Hello. I recently picked up a Stellar Wars and I'm enjoying it so far. Ive had to disassemble and clean the drop targets, and pinside has been a wonderful resource.

I have noticed that the triangle S-T-E-L-L-A-R inserts on the playfield (pointing to their respective targets) are always on and appear to be part of the GI, as opposed to the the circle S-T-E-L-L-A-R W-A-R-S inserts at the center of the playfield, which are switched and show the player's progression towards spelling out STELLAR WARS. At first i assumed this was a lazy hack job (primarily because WARS on the outlanes is obviously switched, so i assumed the STELLAR triangle inserts also would be), but looking on YouTube and reviewing the lamp switch matrix, it seems this is how it was designed. Boo.

In a perfect world i would want the triangle inserts to show the player their shot progression, and also participate in the light show instead of just sitting there on all the time, which is boring and dumb.

Has anyone else noticed this? Have you considered a solution? Can I link the two "S" inserts, the two "T" inserts, and so on so the triangle inserts mimic what the circle inserts do?

Interesting idea. The lights would flash in sync with their counterparts. It might give some extra excitement to the middle of the playfield. It should be easy to test by using some clips

I have dismounted, disassembled, cleaned & polished, re-decal'd, reassembled, remounted, and tested 2 of the 3 drop target banks. After i finish with the last drop target bank I'm going to do some testing with the lights.

I did run into a strange scoring issue with the left drop target bank, maybe someone can point me in the right direction. Per the rules, clearing the left target bank the first time awards 5k points, then 10k points the second time, and then 5k points each subsequent time cleared for the remainder of the ball. On my machine, the first clearing always scores 5k, and the second clearing always scores 10k, but it seems to be a bit of a grab bag after that. With the glass off for testing I started several games and cleared the targets about 20 times and tracked the points awarded, and it's all over the place. Every time it scores 10k, the score display ticks up one at the 10k value, not 10 individual 1k ticks. If it was scoring 5k twice, I'd think it would tick 5 times at 1k twice, so I dont think it's a switch issue. I havent seen a similar scoring issue anywhere else, although i also haven't tested the right drop target bank as extensively. Any ideas for troubleshooting? Any theories? Does your Stellar Wars do this?

It works fine. I disconnected GI to the triangle inserts and isolated the ground chain, then split off each letter before the diode and wired in a new diode before heat shrinking it.

Customer of mine with a stellar wars had an odd issue.
Ball 1 works, drains and the. The game doesn’t recognize ball 2.
After a couple days it worked again.

I haven’t gone on site yet, but thought it may be the drain switch.

However I was curious on one of my posts, there was a coil lug under the apron that looked to be grounding out, did anyone take the apron off and find how the coil was oriented? Anyone have similar issues?
