Have option to purchase non working 1977 Stern Disco Pinball machine. Machine powers on, lights up, bumpers don't work etc. However, when the ball drains it will spit it back out. I've worked on a few Williams EM's but never a stern.

I guess I'm asking the community what you figure a good price would be?
Are the parts for this one rare (only 815 produced)?
What should I really look for before purchasing (aside from the common playfield/backglass paint issues etc.)?

Thanks,

Stern Disco is a somewhat rare machine, but it isn't popular with collectors. A backglass and playfield plastics would be hard to find for this machine. Basically, make sure the machine is mostly complete. Buying missing parts for the machine can be pricey. If the machine has good cosmetics and it's not working properly, you should pay no more than US$300. A machine like this would be a good buy at around US$200 in non-working condition...

Thanks Fresmythson. Talking to the current owner it seems it has exchanged multiple hands who have worked on it so I'm thinking a lot has been messed with. Never a good sign with EM machines. Hate to let any EM machine go but if the price is not right you sort of have to chalk it up as one lost I guess.

Got the pin after for $150.00. Pretty good shape but needs work obviously. It has one of the stupid sound boards wired in place of chime unit, some plastic broke and I'll have to recreate (if I can find images). Will also be needing to re-seat/fix most of the playfield inserts.

Device powers on, ejects ball but playfield action items are not active including flippers. So have to work through the switch problems, clean all score reels, ball count, bonus units etc. first.

If anyone has scans/pictures of the playfield plastics they wouldn't mind sharing...would really appreciate it.

About 25 years ago when I was building my collection one time I had about six machines for sale. All were similar vintage and condition and working perfectly. Being a hate disco guy, I didn't like the looks of the machine and priced it about half of the others. At that time I was the only collector in my area building a collection, so my sales went to people who never thought of owning a pin before seeing my swap sheet add. Some of the more expensive games went first but then a guy came and before I could show him which of the 20 or so games were for sale was drawn directly to the Disco. A better business person probably would have raised the price but I was happy to let it go for about $200, to have room to set up a game I liked. BTW one of the last to go from this batch was a Bally Play Boy in very nice shape for around $450. Most liked it but said their wife would never let them bring it home. My sales pitch for that was to pick out the girl on the girl most resembling their wife, point it out to her and tell her, "Look honey doesn't she look just like you, I had to buy it." It still was one of the last to go.

Thanks so much hwyhed! These should help out for sure. The one I need the most is 23A-101-1C (image # 4).

Any chance I can get an overhead shot of that one. I have to recreate the graphics as it is missing.

My Disco is not fully working and present. Start game button does nothing. Dropping coin automatically starts reset sequence and ejects ball into lane. Shoot ball and the only switches working are the drain and game in play (top of shooter lane). No bumpers, tragets etc...only lights.

Working through it

Again may thanks for taking the time to get those images. IF you can get any overhead of the 4th one that would really help as I wouldn't have to straighten it.

I can attempt to take a better pix for u, but I won’t b home for 6 hrs..so maybe 8-9 pm your time? I’ll do my best to help u out w whatever problems/questions u might have..

Jeez that would be great! No mad rush...just one one of many projects I'm working on. I'm in the process of cleaning the stepper units and switches etc.

Perhaps through that process it might eliminate some of the problems I'm having.

Again I really appreciate the help as Disco is so rear very few know anything on them let alone own one.

They are perfect! Thanks again.

Cleaned the ball counter last night and that works as it should. Still have the no switches/pop bumpers etc. issue (no scoring i guess its better called).

Also, game just starts with drop of coin. Almost like credit button does nothing nor does credit wheel. Drop coin and ball shoots over into lane and two player game active....really weird. Tracing through the wires and switches this weekend hopefully.
