Because the old holes are loose - could fill them but then you’re nailing into filler - I’m moving the rails back 1-2mm so they are nailing into fresh wood.
I have had good results with drilling the screw holes out much larger & filling them with epoxy. Place the siderail back on & drill small pilot holes for the nails. Works great.
