Love the symbols. Wouldn't change a thing. Go RD go! It's kick ass.

Finally the backglass is done - there was a hold up because the toughened glass place supplied the blank glass with a “toughened glass” engraving on it (even though they were asked not to..)

I haven’t picked it up yet, I’ll go get it Monday.

But nice to see it done! Picture is on the light box, but the guys say it looks awesome in person.

I’ll be working on the PF over the weekend.

Had a spare afternoon - and a roll of sandpaper - so away I go!

Out with the old ...

And in with the ... nothing.

That was an hour of sanding! 60 grit on my little orbital sheet sander. That old varnish was like concrete! My arms are still tingling. Haha

The backglass looks amazing.

Really has a 3D sorta look about it.

I can’t get the pics to do it justice - you’ll have to come to NZ to see it in person.

(It still has the protective backing paper on the back .. hence the score holes are white..)

I’ve had a few people who’ve wanted prints of the backglass artwork - I’ve had a chat to Brad and he can offer them up printed on archival paper (like the Zombie Yeti prints)

You can get a 16”x20” for $40 or a full size backglass sized one for $75. Plus some postage from Texas.

I don’t make any dough out of it! It’s all for Brad - it would be awesome to see him move a few prints.

Plus I’m taking him out for BBQ and beer next time I hit Texas. Priceless!

Check out his website and email him directly if you want something snazzy for your pin room wall.

I wonder what it would take to have CPR offer it as a real mirrored backglass.

Brad is awesome. I have his wooden pinball machine piece in my pinball room.

I may be wrong but for CPR to do it you would look at a lot as I can't imagine a deluge (enough to justify a run) of people ordering a glass just to have it. Also, doing this as a one off is one thing but to produce more for sale you would need license from Led Zepplin as well as Rick since it has the Bally name.

I just found this Led Zeppelin logo generator online. It might help make some rule cards or something.

The font remains the same!

Good find!

Interesting that when I searched for Zep photos to create some ideas of where I wanted Brad to go, that LZ official site never came up. There are some great photos there.

Interesting also that on that offical Warner Bros LZ font generator one of the pictures has the Swan Song label picture associated with the band logo. Certainly something you didn’t see “back in the day” ...

Right - just got back to Pukekohe.

Peeled the backing off the backglass, looks good.

NZ glass is metric size thickness, so the American imperial size trims are a little loose. I have put a few dobs of silicone on them to hold them tight, so I’ll let it sit for an hour before fitting.

Check out the gloss black lift trim.

So, I got all the cabinet together, and decided to put the standard coin door back on to see how it looked (not polished or anything...)

The original idea was to have a polished original coin door ... you can see the polished shooter knob I did ... but I’m sorta 50/50 on having it original polished stainless or gloss powdercoat black, like everything else.

Probably both would look fine ...

What does Pinside say?

maybe coin door black
with coin acceptors in polished stainless or chrome
or vise versa
Its looking great now or which ever way you are going. Love the look of the BG

What about a matt black door?

stock. Would look more original

RD,
Please hold while I blast some LZ after a monster team victory by the Warriors in game-6, and concoct a few mock-ups...
It's getting late and I will have to move quickly.

Quoted from rotordave:

Your current design is dictating the rhythm of this thing like a great LZ album with 9 songs.
(9 sides to a cabinet -- if we consider the 10th side -- the bottom is just a "filler" track, hehe)
It's gotta stay coherent. Each song (side) has to sound like it's on the same album.
You have 8 tracks already, here's the 9th, and it really has only 2 options:

Please hold.

What won't work? (Let's get all the wrong answers out of the way first)

The most obvious solutions won't work:

1. Black (often great, but not in this case)
2. Chrome (gross, almost always -- except on a EK, lol)
3. Stainless, unless there are plenty of stainless left on the playfield/glass channels, etc (machines are generally stainless or black, pick ONE) no stainless left, since you went black accents, so...

Here it comes...
-mof

#182 1 year ago
Quoted from mof:

Here it comes...

Stand by ....

#183 1 year ago

Two options:

[1]
White coin door is a must, with light grey (or stainless) accents to match the feel of the side-art, and to NOT overpower the black of the backglass: coin return push-button, 3 quarter slot borders, start button border (5 symbols — so to speak) — to match the cadence of the symbols on the side of the machine.

[2]
White coin door, with light grey (or stainless) coin door frame with matching bolts. It's an extra square, and is a rather commanding shape, it's a bit of a parallel shape to the backglass, but if it's light grey, it will be more subtle and it might help. Stainless might be too dark.

Pros and Cons to both.

(please forgive the hand-filled artist's renderings in gimp, I rushed it!!!)

Leaning towards 2
Keep it all in a white-to-near-white range and pick and choose what shapes you express on the front.
No blacks.
Less is more.
It's all about the backglass and the cabinet sides.
Don't hog the album on the coindoor.

MOF is jazzed after the Warriors win!

Ironically - I’m also watching the Warriors. Albeit a different sport - and on the other side of the planet.

White would work - but it’s going to be in a row of tidy all original 75-76 Ballys so something that fits that mould would be preferable.

I’m thinking the polished door would be the way to go. Same as the Evel Knievel... the good thing about the polished door is it isn’t really any colour. It’s just ... there. lol

Quoted from rotordave:

row of tidy all original

Totally inconsequential. This game is going to stand out like a one-of-a-kind machine in every way. No expectation for it to flow with any other game. It's unique.

Chrome/polished BELONGS on an EK. And I'm not sure what else...

Ok, think of it like John Travolta all-white disco suit in 1976, and the BG is the black shirt collar... THAT'S IT, Keep the rest WHITE with light-grey accents to define the other shapes... but no black hat, black tie, black belt... Black shirt collar, cuff-links, shoes, (and hair) is it.

Did John Travolta wear a BIG CHROME BELT BUCKLE in Saturday night fever?

No.

Look at my 2 proposed images, and cover the coin door front area with your hand.
Pause.
Ask your brain, what is it expecting there? (don't peek!!!)

My brain says: More side cabinet feel. Mostly white with a few simple outlined shapes, hopefully in medium grey or so, so that it's not too overpowering shape-wise or contrast-wise so that you stop enjoying the side art. Nothing loud. (Chrome is loud.) There's no chrome nearby to tell the brain, "Hey man, I'm just blending with this chrome over here, so I'm cool man!"

Quoted from mof:

Nothing loud. (Chrome is loud.)

It wouldn’t be chromed. That’s too bling for me!

It’s just polished. The EK one is too. Polished with my metal polishing kit. Dulls off over time. Probably looks like they did when they rolled out of the factory 40 years ago.

Just a thought... the cab art looks a lil repetitive with all the symbols.
Pick either having them on the backbox or side cab only, not both. Maybe use some art like this in its place.

I think I like mof’s second picture with the black trim on the coin door, but don’t white the coin door. Just polish it. That black trim is pretty cool looking, especially with the polished bolts offsetting the black like on the legs.

#194 1 year ago

Can't beat polished stainless......

#196 1 year ago

I'm all in on picture #2 from mof. That's a stone cold perfect solution that flows with the rest of the work and is fittingly unique.

#197 1 year ago
Quoted from cletus:

with the black trim

2) That's not black trim there -- that's literally original stainless, which means reflections (to a degree).

2nd image is perfect for the side of the back box

The cabinet is all finished.

I wanted a nice simple 70s stencil look for it.

The clean looking cabinet draws your eye to the sexy backglass. The playfield will also be reasonably straight forward, in line with the standard Freedom playfield and the 75-76 EM vibe.

If it was an 80s-later machine, maybe I would have gone more detailed.
