Mostly all the mechanical stepper units with levers suffer from binding at the hinge points. They get lubed or greased and it turns to guck after some years causing things to not move freely. They need to come apart and get cleaned, you'll be amazed at how much they will free up after a good cleaning. The bonus count issue if BH uses this unit could very well be caused by this.
