I’m a firm believer in something being worth whatever someone will pay but I’d like to hear some opinions about this game from people that have had it in their collections.

I’m looking to add one more pin to my collection to bring it to 6, which is all I have room for and I want an EM with multiple drop target banks. High Hand seems like a perfect fit and I have a customer that has a nice one in his basement that he’s asking $1000 for. I was going to offer him $750 and see what happens. The game plays like it should and the playfield is damn near perfect. I’d probably replace the rubbers and the ball but other than that, it’s in great shape.

Any thoughts?

Quoted from jrpinball:

I don't know if you've ever played it before, but "High Hand" is one of those drop target games on which the targets do not reset after they are made. It is sometimes derisively referred to as "the putting green", because all that's left to do after you've made all the targets is to try to drop the ball into the kickout hole, hopefully when it's lighted for special.
The add-a-ball version, "Capt. Card" is a much better game, but difficult to find, since it's production number is quite low. To each his own, but I don't really care for the game.

I’ve never played it before last week but I read on IPDB that people disliked the fact that the drops don’t reset. I wonder how many times during a 5 ball game I’d take all 16 targets down? I’d say I’m at the intermediate level on most pins.

It's worth $750, nice looking game, good art package.
It's one of my least favorite drop target wedgeheads for sure, mostly down to it's incredibly dumb ruleset, where you build up bonus and then pray you side drain (while the score motor isn't already running) so you can cash in the bonus.
Game really needs a code update.

I definitely didn’t know that. So I’m assuming that if the ball ‘center drains’, you don’t collect the bonus?

Thanks for all the input. The owner has a guy coming over this week to look at the machine and he’s going to try to get the $1000 for it. I think I’ll be a fall back option for him at $750 if he can’t get what he wants for it.

As others have mentioned here, it’s a very pretty machine and that’s what grabbed me but since this is going to be my final pin purchase for the foreseeable future, I’ve decided to let it come to me if it’s meant to be. Update soon.

I admire your outlook, but don't let it, LOL. After about 6 months or so, you'll look for another home for it. I rescued one, cleaned it up a bit, in hopes it would stay. I then played it quite regularly to see if I could get past the 'the drops don't reset' stage - and I couldn't. It would become almost painful just watching the ball float around the PF with all the drops down - especially so if I accomplished that on ball #1 (and yes, you can). I got it myself because I fell in love with the BG and art package. Take a deep breath, and wait for another title to come along. Really ... sometimes patience can physically hurt.

Thanks for the advice. I think I may pass after thinking about what you said, referring to knocking down all the targets on the first (or second) ball.

My last question is, why does Joker Poker’s EM version rank higher on this site that it’s SS cousin? I’m pretty sure the drop targets don’t reset on the EM but do on the SS. I understand that it’s a harder find than the SS version and has a slightly different rule set but why does High Hand get looked at so differently?

Ok one last question. Which would you pick to keep: Capt Card or Joker Poker EM?

I'm too lazy to do a search right now, but I believe there's a thread here somewhere where a guy in Europe rewired his "HH" to reset after making all the targets.
I believe he did similar mods to other games as well. Sharp dude.

I was wondering if that could be done.

I played the heck out of the Joker Poker SS back in my teen years and it’s a lot of fun with that cool layout but I’m curious why the EM version seems to get a pass on the drops not resetting. I suppose the 15 of them are harder to take down than the 16 on High Hand but when you do there is not any more to shoot for than on HH. On JP, a few rollovers and 2 pop bumpers and on HH, 4 rollovers, 1 pop bumper and the kick out hole in the middle.

Oh well, I’m sure a Mata Hari EM will come my way soon.

HH is worth owning. It has well placed drops, the "putting green" is actually one of the most challenging shots ever put on a wedgehead and the side drains are a welcome bonus when they could be worth a grand like on most games.
I love the look of the p/f and glass, one of Morrisons best glasses.
If you want the drops to reset get a Capt Card, or an Abra but I like the rule set and it remains one of my most played machines.

Thanks for the input. I’d still love to have it in my game room and it’s actually still or sale. The guy will take $900 for it now but I’m holding firm at $750 and so far, he’s not budging.

I’d love to have an Abra ca Dabra, Capt Card, Kingpin or either a Jack in the Box or Jumping Jack as my final Pin purchase but man, are they ever tough to find.

Quoted from JONESDS:

Is capt card on your wish list because the drops reset or you like an AAB? I thought I would like an AAB game but find I much prefer the replay games.

It’s a good question but like you, I’m a replay guy. It’s just that the resetting drops on Capt Card make it equally attractive, if not more.

I like seeing what’s available but most of the time, it’s the ‘out of nowhere’ opportunity games that you end up getting that you enjoy most. aka Space Mission for me.
