Lightning strikes again! Acquired a SEA DEVIL just a few weeks after finding a Killer Shark. It's a good thing too because the Killer Shark i'm restoring has a bunch of missing parts. Now i'll have a nice example of a working game to go off of. Besides the theme based on a Manta Ray, they are almost identical although they do have a few things that are different. Killer Shark is pretty rare, about five i know of worldwide. Sea Devil is even rarer - i've only been able to find three so far.

Threw this together to show some of the differences between Killer Shark and Sea Devil and what parts i'll be able to repro for both machines. Also highlights what operators have done over the years.

The Instruction plates i desperately needed for the Killer Shark are in great shape. I can also perfectly match the lamp and assembly now instead of guessing

A look inside the front: Manta Ray projector assembly, sound assembly

(I see that spot where that mystery bolt on the outside left of the cabinet is covering - may have been a power switch?)

A couple of spent starters lying around.

A look inside the back. Here's where it gets really interesting.

These are parts that are completely missing from my Killer Shark.

Ocean color wheel assembly: metal brackets, 2.5 RPM motor, shaft, washer, light bulb with lamp shade, and a near mint color plexi wheel. All stuff i'm going to have to remake.

Also missing were these 2 screens. These are like mini movie screens for the projectors.

And there is a white frosted plexiglass on the top that diffuses the bubble projector which shoots animated bubbles down from the top.

    Screen Shot 2014-10-16 at 8.12.05 PM.pngScreen Shot 2014-10-16 at 8.12.05 PM.png Screen Shot 2014-10-16 at 8.12.19 PM.pngScreen Shot 2014-10-16 at 8.12.19 PM.png

There is a large piece of smoked glass and a mirror that reflect everything to create an illusion of depth.

    Screen Shot 2014-10-16 at 8.12.41 PM.pngScreen Shot 2014-10-16 at 8.12.41 PM.png

And last but not least - The bubble projector.

This is a completely different design than the Killer Shark.

The Killer Shark uses the same etched circles on plastic. But its installed onto a cylinder with a motor that slowly rotates it while the bulb inside projects the bubbles.

On the Sea Devil the etched circles are kept flat. It has a motor and lights behind it as well but it projects small colored rectangles through another disc (like the color wheel). I'll get better pix when this gets pulled apart.

And the fluorescent light has blue tubing over it. Not sure if its factory but i'm sure it was needed to tone things down.

Made some progress, but will be finishing up the Killer Shark first.

Got some time to work on the cabinets. Yes that was plural. I 'm restoring 2 Sea Devils now and Killer Shark simultaneously.

Thanks, it's really something in person - the colors really pop.

    Quoted from PM_Jeremy:

    Most impressive

    #40 8 years ago

Wish I could have salvaged these cabinets but they crumble to the touch like a stale Triscuit. Even if I fixed the worst areas of damage, the rest of the cabinets pieces are super fragile and ready to topple.
The 2nd Sea Devil didn't even have a bottom left, it had to be screwed down to a pallet just to ship it. Plus paint touch ups would have been next to impossible due to the damaged areas faded to varying shades of blues and purples.

    Cabinets done, ready to populate.

Killer Shark is just waiting on the screen printed art.

    #49 8 years ago

Thanks! I'll be selling one of the Sea Devils.

    Quoted from radium:

Those things are killer man. Gun game plus crazy ocean theme = win.
Hope I can pickup something like this one day.

    #50 8 years ago

I know! It's taking a bit longer than I thought it would since I've got a few projects going on at the same time. Most of these are 90% done. Time Pilot 84, Willow, Frisky Tom, Space Harrier UR and DX, Empire Strikes Back, Atari Football 2 and 4 player, Taito Change Lanes, Sente Chicken Shift, Sente Snake Pit, Sente Snacks n Jackson, Sente Hat Trick CT, Tail Gunner, Life Force, T-Mek, Super Dodgeball, Dragon Spirit, Moon Patrol, Ms PacMan, Burgertime, BagMan, Jumbo, oh and a few pins; Centaur, Spirit, Sea Witch, Star Gazer, Space Shuttle....

    Quoted from EM-PINMAN:

Aw man.....I have been waiting to play that thing.......still not done.....................

    What's that?

    Quoted from dasvis:

What do you do in your spare time?

    1 week later
    #55 8 years ago

I am working on my website, should be done in a month or so i hope. KLOV has a lot of great members but a few very loud and whiney a-holes got the attention of the d-bag MODS and that was that. I pulled all my pix off there.

    Quoted from fuko:

Do you have a website where we can see more pictures of your projects in one place? The teardowns, the repro-ed parts, the artwork, the rebuilds, and the finished products? I'm blown away by the scale of it all, and yet the attention to detail is never missed. It's awe inspiring, and makes me want to push forward and finish some of my own projects that have gone cold. If I'm not mistaken, at one point you had a lot of the work posted over at KLOV, but it was all taken down after a blowup (don't know or care about the details)
Either way, congrats man on a job well done

    Some progress…

Sand Blasting the spear guns. 1 Is complete, the other was cut off so we will be fabricating a new tip.
These have such great lines/shapes. Reminds me of something Batman would have made in the Bat cave.

More parts ready, need a bit of dusting first.

That black coin return piece is actually plastic not metal so it will get a coat of cockpit spray to freshen it up first.

    Polished these plastic pieces up.

    8.png8.png

    #63 8 years ago

Chrome boat T-molding installed. The top 45 degree angles were a real bitch to cut and match at the corners. The Killer Shark doesn't even have T-molding up there.
