Hi All,

Not only am I a 1-day old pinside baby but I also am new to EM pinball altogether. For good or ill, I got my hands on a neglected Klondike and I'm fairly lost already. I just want to do the bare minimum to see what is working and what isn't so I can do more research about where to begin. The main issue? The previous owner accidentally ripped the power cord out and I am stumped about how to connect it.

The work I've done so far is minimal. I have the manuals and wiring diagram (which I don't know how to read yet) and I can take the playfield off if I need to but I'm such a total noob that I can't even turn this bad boy on. As you can see from the photos there is a component that has nothing connected to it that mystifies me and some bare wires for what I presume was for the old-timey 2-prong non-grounded power cord. If there were wire nuts connected to that they have probably rolled under something.

Any advice would be truly appreciated. I've searched through the forums here and older posts but my pinball vocabulary is so lacking that I'm not even sure what to search for.

Thanks,
Adam

Ok. First question - do you know how to use a multimeter? You will need one.

To answer your first question - that is the credit knocker - that’s what makes the pop sound when you win a game.

You are going to have to replace the power cord. It goes to the transformer - the heavy square thing near the front of the machine. If you follow the cord you have in your hand, you will find the transformer. The cord will need to be fed out to the back of the machine, which usually means removing the head (which is where the scores are displayed). There are usually four bolts that hold it down, and wires going to rectangular pieces that unplug. Under no circumstance should you have to cut any wires to remove the head.

You will have to remove the Backglass to remove the head. Search UTube on how.

Visit Pinwiki to learn about EM (Electromachanical) machines.

Welcome to an addicting hobby - there’s nothing like the feeling you get when bringing something back to life. This should be an easy repair for many, but since it’s your first, it may seem daunting, but you can do it.

Ask questions so you can do this safely and correctly. Search this forum for replacing power cords. There are several threads about how to.

Good luck

Thanks @billc479!

Have multimeter. Will travel.

Regarding the credit knocker, is there a reason the previous owner would have disconnected it? I got the impression that the power cord was violently ripped from the machine and I was worried that was involved somehow. I haven't found any other loose wires but I haven't looked very closely yet.

As for taking things apart, I've already figured that part out. I moved this bad boy in pieces into my basement by myself and then reassembled without issue.

I guess my project for the weekend is replacing that power cord. I've already read through a few of the threads and I know what I need to get. A little more intensive study and I should be ready to go.

Thanks for your help!

People disconnect knockers all the time. Usually a bother the neighbors in an apartment, wife sleeping, scare the cat, etc reason. But all bad reasons as one of the greatest thrills of pinball is that knocker sound when you win a game.

Bill has you on the right track. I was you 4 years ago, and with lots of help from some very nice and knowledgeable people on this site. Have now refurbished about 25 games, owned 36, and currently have 10. Is very addicting, and they breed secretly in the night. Like rats and humans. But there is nothing quite like having a dead game, then bringing it back to life.

Judgement call. I never do because every time you take it out risk rises and it's one of the most valuable parts of the game.

Here's some pics from my Klondike. The power cord was replaced at some point and you can see the wire nuts that attach it to the original wire harness. I also included the transformer. Mine is high tapped so yours may not be exactly the same. Lastly, you can see the wiring going to the knocker.

This is a really fun game and a good first pin. Congrats and welcome to the club.

edit - rotated pics

Ps, sorry for the rotated pics but I can't edit them to fix 'em...

Great clean looking game. btw: if you hover the pointer over pictures when you upload them before posting, three small square control buttons pop up. One is a rotate button. Just learned that myself. Think it works when you edit a post also.
