Still repairing the (missing) metal ladder that rotates back and forth.

    IMG_5322 (resized).jpg

    #352 1 year ago

    Final to do list:

    Paint chrome 25 cent plate
Paint blue and red beach ball
Repair and clear coat ladder, install
reapply a few decals, instructions on inside
    Fix 2,3 credit coil/assembly

    Everything else is working:

Elephant picks up ball, blows ball over hard, releases ball.
    All switches and buttons working
    Ladder motor working
    Vacuum working
    Corn up working
Sound working although the sound has a lot of crackling.
    - Have the music digitized so might be able to find someone to clean it up and create a new tape)

for some reason i have the dahhm dahmmm dadaa dahmmm dummm duhmmm dumm circus song in my head now... Sad Ringling Bro's. Just recently had their last show.

    #354 1 year ago

well luckily that's not the music this thing plays.

The generic circus music is one of the reasons i don't like Cirqus Voltaire.

The original filthy beach ball had small sections cave in when i tried to clean it.

    The original is .40MM
The hobby stores in the US only have 38MM or 1.5 balls.
    Which are pretty close.

Also I bought balls from China on Ebay that claim to have .40MM balls but they are actually .38MM

You are probably thinking .2MM won't make that much difference but it does.

.38 MM ball doesn't have enough surface area to lift it high enough to hover over the elephant trunk and into the ladder. NO matter how high i increase the flow from the vacuum, the air just rushes by.

But the .40MM flies! In fact it launches the beach ball WAAAAY up. I have to put the vacuum on the lowest setting AND paint the ball to get the correct weight to hover where i need it. Its THAT precise.

Also the ball has to be the exact weight to trigger the very sensitive switches.

I had to order actual .40MM balls from the UK.

Here's the original .40MM nasty ball vs. .38MM US/China ball.

And a pic of the .40MM painted ball.

    More progress...

Finally fixed and painted the ladder assembly. It was broken in several places. Will probably bend it up a bit. Its too perfect.

    Just needs flags attached.

Might redo all the flags. The vinyl ones i printed out seem to be pulling apart already.

Next up. Try to fix this stupid 2-3 plays per credit assembly.

I didn't think there was such a thing as too perfect on this restoration.

    Still simply amazing.

So the flags i made were printed on vinyl so that i could plotter cut them. They looked good but the vinyl didn't stick to itself.
Next, i printed the flags on paper decals like the originals which turned out great but i had to hand cut each and every one - ugh!

Now that i had good decals i needed to figure out how to get the flags to point down. If you apply the decals to the string laying down, the flags go all over the place when the the string is installed. Crap!

So finally, i decided to install the decals with the string in place, draped like it would be in the machine. It worked!

flags all over the place (resized).jpg

Finally after about 5 tries, this last piece is done!! Trying to paint chrome with such fine detail is not easy. It's not perfect but it's pretty close.

Man that is seriously sweet !!! What a conversation piece it must be. Would love to see a video of it fully working some day.

    #395 6 months ago

what's the estimate as to how many of these still exist?

    #396 6 months ago

Conventional wisdom is that only about a dozen or two have survived. That estimate is consistent with several of the scarce Sega titles. This estimate includes both Sega Jumbo models.

    #397 6 months ago

    There’s only 5 that I’m aware of.

    #398 6 months ago
    Quoted from PACMAN:

    There’s only 5 that I’m aware of.

I too am aware of only a half dozen or so. Nevertheless, it's probably a safe bet that another few will surface in the future, especially since the game's recognized value is so high.

I hope that a few more are out there because I would love to add one to my line-up, in the future. Perhaps a more accurate estimate for this title is a dozen or less worldwide; but, nobody really knows. Only time will tell.

By comparison, for decades, only a dozen or fewer Rockola Army Navy games were known to exist. As the game's price tag escalated dramatically, the last decade has uncovered about a second dozen.

There’s probably a few collecting dust in some old lady’s basement whose deceased operator husband held onto it for some reason.
