1969 Gottlieb Airport pinball machine.

This machine had significant age damage, flaking, faded paint on the cabinet, back glass was in rough shape and playfield was split and had post damage at both vari-targets.
Entire machine was disassembled, repaired and restored back to its original condition.

-Cabinet artwork was scanned, cabinet stripped, repaired and redone with Pantone matched oil based paints and HVLP gun.

-Playfield stripped down to bare wood, repaired and repainting using a flatbed scanner, photoshop, illustrator, a large format stencil cutter, Createx colors and airbrushes before getting 5 coats of automotive clearcoat applied.

-Backglass had pretty significant crazing, delamination and paint oxidation over the past 50yrs. Damaged areas were scanned, stripped and repainted with stencils, airbrushes and color matched Createx colors.

Plastics were scanned and redesigned in photoshop and illustrator and then screen printed with Nazdar inks and cut out on a CNC machine.

The restoration took over 150 hrs to complete and involved several skill sets that I really enjoy. This game was one of the first pinball games I played 50+ years ago (Gulf Stream was the first) and was one I always wanted to restore!
Hope you enjoy!

Wow, very cool

Tremendous, another member of the bare wood repaint club! Would love a lesson on screen printing your own plastics.

Airbrushed all the detail too? What stencil material do you use.

Bravo !!

Very inspiring!!

Enjoy !

Stunning work. Super jealous of the skillset on display here.

Screen printing - 230 mesh and Nazdar S2 vinyl ink. Lots of time in PS and AI doing design work. Indexing 2 colors… simple. Indexing 6 colors… experience might help.

Airbrush - Badger 2020

Stencil materials - Oramask 810, 810s and 811

You sir are a magician!
What a masterpiece!!

Awesome work! Really beautiful.
I tried to screen print plastics for my King Pin, but with water-based ink. The black lines went down OK, but the larger areas just didn't stick very well on Acrylic, PET or polycarbonate . But I couldn't justify buying the proper Nazdar inks for 100's of dollars for just one plastic set.

Did you burn your own screens or use a service?

I'm going to do another bare wood repaint on a pitch & bat, with all new wood to boot. It's definitely simpler than a pinball machine so that should help.

Thanks! I get into doing restore jobs, the more challenging the better! As for screen printing, on PETG you would need to use a solvent based ink, I chose Nazdar due to the adhesion properties. There is a similar product from SunChemical but the costs are right about the same.

I burn them in my shop. I do most everything in-house, if the quality is off I can’t blame anyone else then.

Thanks, great to hear for sure!!

The back glass repairs are also amazing! I’ve never tried but know it is notoriously difficult to do convincing repairs…well, I’m convinced!

Incredible work.
You shouldn't have given it all away in one post, this thing deserves visibility! I would have followed for weeks!

Love the thought of visibility, but suspense is better in a great movie! I had a good time doing this so I wanted to share it. Next time I’ll try to hold back a little for later.

Your restoration work is incredible! If you don’t mind, what were your techniques used in restoring your back glass?

Thanks

Thanks, appreciate your interest! Back glass is tricky. How I treat them is separated into 2 categories, solids and translucent for lighting. Other than the basics of cleaning and prepping the glass that’s being restored, art scans, stencils, color matching and airbrushing the repair. Solids are pretty simple since light isn’t passing through them. Like the Pilot, no light passes through him so color matching is straight forward. For translucent parts that light will pass through, the easiest method is to remove the artwork up to either an edge or something that is dividing the colors. If you try to just paint over an area that light passes through it will be adding on top of older material and the build up will show when light is introduced. It’s very difficult to “layer” paint like this and get the desired results this way. With the stewardess in Red most of the repair was done to an edge or color change. The challenge was with her face and trying to blend colors and still retain the translucent results that were necessary. I had clear scans to work with so if this would have gone south I could have cleared the rest of her face and repainted it from scratch. I also use a lighted table to “see” the results while I’m airbrushing.

With the gentleman at the counter, his arm was damaged with the tape that was put there when originally assembled ( this is very common on just about any Gottlieb EM, something in the tape damages the paint and discolors it, pretty easy to spot ) For this solid, the dark blue had a metallic look to it that was impossible to match so it was best to clear the paint all the way to the edge of the desk so that an difficulty in matching the color perfectly was diminished with there being a boarder. 28B34C30-7592-4DEB-B6C2-25BBC7EB41E0 (resized).jpeg28B34C30-7592-4DEB-B6C2-25BBC7EB41E0 (resized).jpeg942E4F68-8F79-4A0F-8489-0779D0293557 (resized).jpeg942E4F68-8F79-4A0F-8489-0779D0293557 (resized).jpegD4757500-5226-4A47-A1EB-7DAD4CCFDC40 (resized).jpegD4757500-5226-4A47-A1EB-7DAD4CCFDC40 (resized).jpeg9F192547-0D00-4240-8D26-802426C60554 (resized).jpeg9F192547-0D00-4240-8D26-802426C60554 (resized).jpeg Same scenario with the Gottlieb name. 34DCA747-7E50-49F5-930C-4129A5038745 (resized).jpeg34DCA747-7E50-49F5-930C-4129A5038745 (resized).jpeg7EC0A5FC-AA97-4042-ADBE-45DD0A3CEF38 (resized).jpeg7EC0A5FC-AA97-4042-ADBE-45DD0A3CEF38 (resized).jpeg82EDCE09-DB7B-40F1-8BCA-D230648168BF (resized).jpeg82EDCE09-DB7B-40F1-8BCA-D230648168BF (resized).jpeg

What do you use to clean and prep the glass?

Quoted from mricks1960:

isopropyl alcohol and q-tips. This can cause damage to existing art so use sparingly with caution.
