Hi,

I'm restoring a Williams Lucky Strike. A previous owner has painted over the coin door, I'm thinking of stripping (or grinding it) and repainting the original color. Does anyone have an idea of what that would be?

Also, can the Williams Coin door decals still be had? Pinball rescue had them, but can no longer sell Williams trade marked products.

thx

Coin door stickers (new United), just scroll down that page:

Saint Louis Ball Bowler sells the coin door decals. You can buy direct from them or look on ebay as they sell on there too.

As to the paint color, it was originally a silver-gray Hammerite paint. You'll find the paint color on your door now is either "faded" or is permanently discolored from cigarette smoke.

I use Rust-Oleum "Hammered" Silver # 7213 (barcode 020066721381) and it is perfect for this door. You can buy it at both Lowe's and Home Depot as well as Ace Hardware stores.

Thanks Ken,

I've ordered the name plates, now I guess I'm committed to redoing the door!

The problem with this one isn't that it's faded or discolored, but someone painted over it with a copper / bronze colored paint. It just doesn't work for me.

Are you sure that these doors were silver hammertone, I thought they were more of a brownish (Tope maybe) color like this Top Hand or Bowl a Strike from ipdb:

Those pictures show faded silver gray hammered paint with rust showing through. Remember, that paint is 50 years old.

On the 8 Ball coin door I restored, I took it to a local guy that did bead blasting. It came out perfectly clean and smooth and ready to paint.

I think some of the doors do have a touch of copper/brown/tan or something in that silver. I'm restoring two Williams pitch and bats and (66 Pitch and bat and a 66 Double play) and the 65 had a very nice door with the 'off -color' silver (inside and outside paint matched). The 66 had concealed areas that matched the 65.

Thanks guys.

I was thinking of bringing the door to my local auto body shop.

yeah, I'm pretty sure it was some sort of tan. maybe a mix of the silver and another color, there's a thread where someone mixes silver hammertone with a blue, while it's still wet, and swear it comes out like the original Stern doors. Maybe there is a similar process that will work for the old Williams doors.

Replace all of your rusty coin door bolts on a pin for less than 50 cents. Enough to do about 30 coin doors.
