Thought you guys would get a kick out of this as there doesn't seem to be many of these machines about and it looks like to have a variant of paint on the head I have not seen yet. On with the story..

She popped up on CL several weeks ago and the seller was erratic... I'd get a single e-mail reply, try to setup a date to look it over.. and they would go radio silent. Tried using a different e-mail address... a requested day would come and go without contact. I think I took it at this point as a personal challenge to land the beast and last Thursday finally had an address and phone number.

It had spent 35+ years in a basement, before that it was in an arcade at Riverside Amusement park in MA which later became Six Flags.

Dad had been a cop and for some reason the park was getting rid of it (park was changing hands?) and he brought it home for the kids. At some point the son painted.. everything maroon. Why? Who knows. Back had never been opened, they had no clue the keys were hanging off the coin door.

First thing I did after unloading it from the Thursday was crack open a beer, pulled up a folding lawn chair and started picking the lock. 10 minutes later is was open and the glass was out and the back open. I tossed some elastics in it, about 40 light bulbs, threw away the ball the was literately covered in rust and fixed one of the flippers with a broken rollpin for evaluation.

Had bad solder joints, weak large gong solenoid, some hacks to the credit wheel, lots of dirty contacts, reset solenoid falling apart... 2 days later she was running at 100% and the paint stripper and sander came out the toolbox..

The paint on the head unit really surprised me, its now the third variant I have seen of a Grand Tour and the only one with a red triangle on the top. Very impressed with the cabinet workmanship, all the joints are tight and very crisp. Tonight going to work on making my patterns for the stencils and once that is done and verified will sand off the last of the paint and start dropping some primer on and doing some minor cabinet repair. Has a few minor scars and 3-4 holes to fill.

The playfield is actually very nice, some buffing compound really brought it back to life in the areas I tested. I'm going to strip it of most of the components and give it a good buff and wax.

Pictures of other variants. I swear I saw one where the inside edges of the backglass were blue but might have been a different title.

He painted the ball arch and apron too?
Look at that paint drip on the insides, jeez.
Good score (early 60s Ballys are hard to find.)
Good job on the restore.

Thanks! I'm not going to stop sanding and scraping till its all gone, BLEH! I might have even scored a nice apron for it.

Anyone know where to find the metal bushing plates for the flippers? There might be some machine work in the near future if I can't find any. She is a grand old lady, can't wait to see it all back together and buffed out.

Got lucky and scored a set of NOS bell coils off Ebay for $16 shipped, WOOT!

Quoted from Gerry:

Cool find saw that one on CL.. glad it got a good home

It took a LONG time to finally get it and MUCH persistence.

Seller was a little erratic is a bit of an understatement.

Quoted from Rat_Tomago:

I love Bally machines and this thread is right up my alley. Thanks for posting and sharing your efforts. I look forward to seeing the final results.

Sorry I have not been posting more this week, between getting taxes done and whipping a Jungle King into working order been stretched thin. The JK has been a BEAR but is finally up and running as it should aside from not always posting 5 balls on coin up.

I think it has a weak solenoid in the coin advance unit, it just seems to short stroke the last ball count. More investigation required.

Today was "make a stencil" day.

Now that I have a pattern, I'm going to stack 2 more pieces of contact paper under the first and cut all three out at the same time.

Did some painting today, polished some chrome, stripped some paint.

DSCN7556 (resized).JPGDSCN7556 (resized).JPG

1) Sandblasted the legs and painted them the original gray color with slight hammertone finish, never nice! Might get the coin door done tomorrow too. Leg levelers, rubber kit and flipper bushings came in today from PBR.

2) Spent some time on the buffing wheel cleaning up the plunger and related hardware.

3) Laid the lower cabinet on its side up on blocks (on the corners) and laid down a nice heavy final coat of paint. I'll let it sit for 48 hours, flip it over and do the same thing to the other side.

4) Have the day off tomorrow so I'm hoping to get the head unit into primer... assuming I'm not chasing after a new machine in the morning.

#17 7 years ago

Out in the sun to cure the paint a bit faster, polished and cleared the flipper buttons, installed, replaced missing button spring and installed tilt mech and wiring.

Sand blasted the coin door and surrounding trim and painted hammertone, they look gorgeous!

#19 7 years ago

Worked on the main control table so I could tuck it out the way. Went over it with a paint brush and compressed air to get all the dust out, replaced main solenoids 110V fuse holders and installed double snap rings to one of the solenoids. The original ring was missing and it had trouble resetting the relay bank for the 4 mushroom bumpers.

Installed the coin door and plunger.

Working on stripping the playfield so I can compound it out and decide if I'm going to clear coat it.

Stripped the paint off the apron, shooter panel and upper hoop.

Stripped the playfield, made some stands to keep the underside from being damaged, compounded and buffed the hell out of it. Looks nice but I'm going to check with the guy next door at work and see what he wants for clearcoating.

Sandblasted the lower and upper apron pieces and got them in primer.

Got the maroon paint off the rebound bumpers and polished them in the vibrating polisher.

Enjoying this thread! I have the Grand Tour in your last photo of the different heads.

Thank you and very cool!

It is nice to hear from other Grand Tour owners! I was starting to think there are very few of these old girls (Grand Tour/Happy Tour) left out there, though there were two on Ebay in the past month and have been checking them out for reference.

Playfield is at the body shop for clear coat along with the aprons and side rails to be painted.

Polished 3/4 of the play-field plastics this weekend and tonight sanded down the head, repaired the scar on the side, glued a broken wood piece, filled some random holes and should be in primer tomorrow after the glue dries.

#28 7 years ago
Quoted from Gerry:

I like, your cranking right along..

Thanks! I'm blasting it with paint now and working on my Touchdown pin between coats!

Odd problem with the 1 and 10 reels "chattering" when hit, 100 / 1000 don't do it. Thought it was bum coils but did not make a difference. Don't mind tossing coils at it, after all they are only $10 a pop. Time to break out the diagram again...

#31 7 years ago
Quoted from NicoVolta:

Also check your 10-point targets on the playfield and ensure they aren't bouncing/vibrating.

I'm actually triggering the coil with the coil from the 100 reel (they are connected with jumper wires) and bypassing everything by jumping the contacts.

Damndest thing.

#33 7 years ago

Update- The flippers went into the polisher tonight and look great! The cabinet head is all in fresh paint and setting up to dry, looks great as well. I need to find the red and blue paint soon so I can paint the spacer between the head and cabinet so I can assemble it all.

A present for Grand Tour owners.

I took the original card which was floating around the cabinet and scanned it in, cleaned it up as best able in Photoshop, made a "box" where the cutout normally is and then filled the box with the scoring info with a MS Gothic font.

You have the blank to use as a template for what ever you wish. Cut the opening out and set a card behind it as factory or add text as you see fit in editing program of your choice.

Quoted from Rat_Tomago:

Awesome job at a repro of those cards.

The font in the box is not quite right, it needs to be bold or something but I don't have that option installed on my computer. The "number of balls" card is from Inkochnito's which is close but the spacing is off from the originals.

#43 6 years ago
Quoted from Rat_Tomago:

Get with other owners or Inkochnito to see if they can either make or scan some files for you. Someone out there has to have originals they can scan for you.

Actually I sent what I had to Inkochnito and he generated sets for his website and the general public.

Still muddling along.. Playfield is back but not that satisfied with it.. one of the plastics got broken this weekend in a minor accident.. one fiber yoke got lost... I swear I'm almost ready to put this thing up for sale. Maybe after the truck is back on the road and Lucky Hand is done fate will smile a bit more kindly on me.

Well, maybe I'll do a little work.

Decided since the parts for the playfield are taking up two work tables that the best thing for me to do is finish cleaning/polishing the pieces and install them to get the space back.

Waiting for bushings and a coil from PBR before proceeding further. I need to tackle the backglass soon, I swear it has deteriorated since the project began.

Busy bee today!

Modified the flipper plates to accept plastic bushings and had to flip the EOS pin on the shoe to catch the EOS switch due to the flipped shoe. Fixed a few fussy light sockets (I'm sure more will show up) cleaned the match stepper as the thumper lights were erratic, cleaned the scoring reels, installed some frosted LED in the back box to protect the backglass and started painting.

My touch up skills are improving (my third job), back glass looks MUCH better. Some areas I did not touch up as they will actually look worse should you go there. Skin tones in particular directly in front of a light look like hell when touched up. Best to pull the bulb in that one spot if you can or just leave it alone if not too bad.

sounds are terrific in the video.
Thanks

You have no idea how many times I just wanted to set this game on fire; it has to be one of the most exasperating experiences ever!

Getting the playfield clear coated was a trip through hell.

Soon as I figure out how to mount my better camera to a tripod I'll do a much better video. I was pleased to make the "skill shot" through the open gate on the third ball and advance a city, its tough on this game!

Just an update; this is still a project. Decided to paint the cabinet proper with the webbing and waited till such a time that I was ready to tackle it. Now that I'm working on a Hearts and Spades I plan to practice and apply the webbing on both at the same time. Going the lacquer and glue route out of a gun for webbing. Seemed only right as the game has come this far not to web it as well.

So glad to see these classic Ballys getting "The Treatment"!

Just wish I got rolling sooner, lot going on the last 2 years. Last major project is a Bally Bazaar; have to replace the back of cabinet, full repaint and stencil. Playfield and backglass are beautiful though.

Forgot to mention; I'm still in touch with the Grand Tour former owner's children who have been getting restoration updates, they are curious how it is going to come out and glad it is being repaired.

#58 4 years ago

I'm ecstatic with the results so far! Not bad for $10 worth of stencil "supplies"

Still have the other side to do and the backbox sides before moving onto the blue portions, not going to rush at this juncture though.

Steady as we go!

Just a FYI for those interested; this is one of the first cabinets I had repainted and it sat for over two years before being webbed and stenciled. Since the base coat was done (on this pin) I remove the rails now for a proper refurbishment instead of leaving on. It takes longer but makes for a more through job. Always looking to up my game...

Also, the other side of the lower cabinet is done. Did not bother to post pictures for obvious reason, looks just like the first side.

#63 4 years ago
Quoted from Ballypin:

You repainted THEN removed the rails? Please share how you removed the nails to release the rails.

Sorry if I wasn't clear- I remove the rails now, strip, paint and then reinstall. This one and one other I never removed the rails before base coat painting. It was repainted in 2016 or 2017 and sat since I really didn't wish to do the stencils without webbing.

To get the nails out I tap a sharp putty knife under the rail causing it to lift and then use progressively thicker wedge tools till the head of the nail is high enough to grasp with vice grips or prying tool.

Your restoration is beautiful. You were fortunate that the play field and the back-glass were in such good shape. I have a Grand tour. I like the game, but the backglass was painted in spots and the play field was hammered. Not a good candidate for me to restore. But the game is fun gaining cities to tour.

Actually I had to do a lot of touch up to the backglass! Thank you for the kind words.

Good Morning all!

Just a follow up as I pulled the playfield a day ago and either replaced or repaired every single GI lamp socket and a few of the insert ones as well. Using Comet warm white retro bullet LED bulbs in the GI and the rest of the inserts and arch lamps are 47's. Lesson learned bench testing playfield lighting vs having it in the machine and playing several games. Everything is nice and even with no lamps dimming or going out altogether.

Last bit was replacement of flipper plunger and rollpin that was wonky, at this point the machine is 100%! 3 years in the making.

Quoted from Silverstreak02:

Wow that looks great. How does it play?

It is a challenging game, what I'd call a typical early 60's coin grabber. The old timers use to say if you were playing longer than 3 minutes there was money being lost. Even on 5 ball the game is pretty hard on you.

Breaking a 1000 points is a notable event with the majority of my scores in the 600-750 range. I might reduce the angle just a touch to see if it changes much. Making the inner loop can be deadly as often it will drain right down the middle as it fires out the other side. Making the upper gate shot skill shot is fairly easy, making the lower gate shot not so much. You either have to get lucky with the right flipper with a backhand or just catch the tip on the left flipper to propel it up and over. When you do get a good score or just sink the gate shot it is a feeling of accomplishment. It will making you a better player with those 2" flippers or else.

#80 4 years ago
Quoted from NicoVolta:

Excellent job... but you used LED’s as GI and filament bulbs under the inserts? Have not seen that before. I do it the other way around.

Uneven GI brightness drives me crazy.

Clear orange inserts are usually too bright with LED's hence the incandescent.. for now. As soon as I find a suitable LED with the proper light output I'll have it changed over to LED 100%

#82 4 years ago
Quoted from NicoVolta:

Agreed I like filaments under clear inserts... just looks better than BULB RIGHT HERE! Though at the museum gotta do LED's under them for maintenance sake.
Hmmmm. Lemme know what you find. Maybe the Comet retros? Needs to be non-ghosting though.

I have the comet clear dome bullet retros under the clear red inserts, they don't look to be ghosting any notable amount. Willing to drop a half dozen or so in the mail for you to try out. They do have halos which are less noticeable in the inserts but still there. I find them excellent for chaser lamps like on Black Hole. I may try frosted domes in 2 playfield locations, where the light is not dispersed very well.. Visible frosted on the playfield I find distracting though, clearly not incandescent when you see it.

916 is my best game this morning.. and under 3 minutes time. The prior game was 750 and I nailed the tour gate not once but twice! and reset the city count clearing all 10 cities again.

Post a video. I’d like to see it in action.

Here is an older video from a year or two ago when it was first put back together, matter of fact it was still on a rolling shop cart when I shot the video!

I have a hi-def camera now and will try and do a new video time permitting.
