I purchased a Bally Dixieland Bingo and was told that I had to take the 1962 Shoot-A-Line bingo that was hacked non-working and had the wiring harness cut in half. It was in 3 pieces disassembled into body, head, playfield, and had a box of "spare" parts. So the "FREE" S-A-L went in the truck destined for "when I can get to it status." After a couple months, I started putting it back together - legs on body, head on top, playfield underside pieces straightened out and screwed back on, and then the wiring. The entire wire bundle was cut so I spent a day attempting to splice 20+ pairs of wires back together the best I could. So far so good. I got the schematics from IPDB.org and attempted to make sense of the coin door, lifter motor, shutter motor, switches, and such. Clearly there were many hacks and modifications over the years. The ball trough for example had the switches cut off, a new exterior button was added to the ball lifter, and mysterious wires were run to the counter and R button. I'm not an electrical engineer guy and knew I would need help. I got that help over the weekend from Nick Baldridge and he's got all the hard stuff well on its way. He might be working on a podcast about this effort so be sure to check out his site about the technical details of the backbox wiring, coil challenges, and the other unique but competent hacks this machine offered.

Below I will be documenting the cosmetic fixes I am pursuing while waiting for coils and other parts to arrive.

Started with the parts that the player will touch during their bingo pinball experience. The lockdown bar and buttons were worn and needed replacement or refreshing.

Had to do some touchup work on the side rail paint job. The second coat I got a little happy with and got some runs. The runs I attempted to fix and made it worse, so I am waiting, then sanding and then repainting the rough spot. I just put nearly all the interior and door metal pieces into the dishwasher for deep cleaning. I'll take them out immediately, dry them in front of a fan, lube them up, then unlube them completely. The inside of the door paint job is complete. Tomorrow I will start putting the door back together. Good progress since Sunday. Thanks for looking.

Thanks for the nice comments Vic, much appreciated. I just got done listening to Nick's podcast.

Check out this podcast Episode 413. The part where Nick is talking
about my machines starts at the 16:00 mark. Very cool stuff. No one know his stuff like Nick. Wow !

Finished up two parts of the project - painted the front door inside and front door outside. I also refinished the apron. Before and after shots here. Will add the hardware back on the coin door both inside and out should look much better. The inside paint job of the door is the last picture above.

Sanded and evened out the staining on the apron. Probably 8-10 coats to get it just right.

Here are some more before pictures, sorry for the wacko order on the pics. This is my first go at a documentation and I didn't organize very well. But you can see the cut wiring harness, the playfield was a mess, the entire underside of the playfield was ripped off, the cabinet had lots of misc parts scattered about, and it was dang dirty too.

OK, well a lot has happened since my last post. https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/show-us-your-coin-door-restorations/page/2#post-4232859

I got a lot of work done on cleaning up the cabinet, painting the inside, cleaning and putting it all back together again. I also took off the side rails and shipped them off to be re-chromed and polished. I just couldn't keep the side rails looking that ratty. I know, its not original and all that. But they were literally worn down to the nubs.

I finished cleaning all the playfield parts, put new rubbers on, playfield got super cleaned and put 3 coats of wax on it, and touched up the ball trough path where the balls literally ate into the arch. I used bondo on the arch and just yesterday picked up a 5 foot x 12 foot piece of Golden Maple laminate from a cabinet/countertop shop called Reico. Thanks to a suggestion from Nick, my plan is to cut a 59" x 1" piece and carefully glue it around the arch from the ball launch area all the way around to a place behind the bumpers on the left side. I think it will really add some character to the machine. If it clashes and just doesn't look right, I will remove it and go back to the bondo and perhaps paint the arch path a cream color that is not noticeable. We shall see. I also went back and put the old lights back under the plastics on the playfield. I tried to use new lamp holders and just hated the result. The old ones worked just fine with a few modifications.

Good chance Nick will be coming in the next two weeks to finish the hard work behind the back box. I will upload pictures of the latest cosmetic updates when I get a chance.

Before and after - ball trail with laminate update. That is Vermont Maple laminate. Very attractive.
