Today is an auspicious day in pinball history!
150 years ago on May 30th, 1871 Montague Andrew Elijah Redgrave filed US patent #115,357 titled "Improvement in Bagatelles" and was approved by the US Patent Office and thus the FIRST mechanical pinball design was officially created!

    Now you know.

I've got two of his bagatelle's. 1871 and 1876. Great piece's of pinball history and a nice way to show people how pinball has evolved 150 years. Wish I could post pictures but I can't right now. Anyone else got any of there own to share?

What was the patent actually for? The shooter rod/spring?

    #8 2 years ago

That, and the fact that the table is tilted! Sort of a major development! Before this bagatelle had more in common with billiards.

    Takeaway quote....

"...combining gravity with muscular power to act as antagonistic forces..."

    Love it.

"Antagonistic Forces" describes a LOT of pinball drama around here...

Trivia: Weeks before the patent for this device was even filed, several companies had already begun producing aftermarket mods for it including chromed side rails, a detailed 1/350 scale Arc de Triomphe topper and a custom brass shooter knob engraved with the likeness of King Louis XVI.

That's true. That is where I dated the woman that became Yelobird 's wife.

NO. Heard it in the 13th Warrior movie. Sounded like a cool thing to post some day.
