Just got back from vacation and downloaded the latest Bond update. Everyone's super excited that the Bond Girl playfield multipliers work now! Now that it's finally "activatable", something messy immediately got my attention -- the rectangular white 007 Multiplier insert was only half lit:

Screenshot_20230610_023630_Gallery (resized).jpgScreenshot_20230610_023630_Gallery (resized).jpg

At first I thought it must be a malfunctioning light, but looking under the playfield, I found there is only one light board there, only on the left side of the insert, because there's another board in the way. I guess this was another case of "meh maybe they won't notice"?

Screenshot_20230610_024000_Gallery (resized).jpgScreenshot_20230610_024000_Gallery (resized).jpg

This inconsistent illumination instantly irritated me, so I spent a little time today trying to figure out a workaround. I dug through my stash and found I had some little RGB light boards from Comet, so I devised this (prototype!!) mount that would allow a second light board to slide under the adjacent large board (which has spacers so there's enough clearance). I also had to cut & repin the wires to snap into the molex connector that drives the light. I thought color-changing RGB would be cool for this light -- it's a big deal in the game so it should be flashier!

Screenshot_20230610_024203_Gallery (resized).jpgScreenshot_20230610_024203_Gallery (resized).jpg

While my little prototype mount (after some modification) fit the way I'd intended, and fully lit up the insert as intended, I learned something I didn't know about the RGB LED -- the time between color changes is relatively slow AND it reverts to red whenever the power is cut. Therefore, since it blinks when active, it's just red all the time -- not flashy & colorful like I'd hoped. (The current stays active enough during lamp diagnostics to cycle the colors, but in gameplay it flashes red.)

^ hard to accurately capture with the camera, but it's much more fully & evenly lit here.

So, since RGB wasn't going to work, Comet does make these boards in single colors too. But just for kicks I checked whatever else I had laying around. A 6-SMD pad didn't work, not enough juice to drive it I guess, but the 3-LED strips worked just fine -- and that puts 3 lights under there instead of two! With more lights and half the wires to monkey around with, it seems I'll likely rework my mount to accommodate the 3-LED strip instead.

I'm torn on what color would be best -- stick with cool white or try something more exotic like purple (for the multiplier animation backgrounds) or blue (for Diamonds are Forever, since that's the song that plays).

Here's a video (again, not captured well due to camera vs naked eye) of different colors from the RGB, for a rough idea. It definitely did not capture the purple well, lol

In the meantime:
1) Are you guys interested for me to make this mod available, or am I just being too picky? Look at your insert during PF multiplier gameplay and see what you think, and sound off below.
2) Should I stick to cool white, or do you like color option(s)?

Price will be reasonable but depends on the final Bill of Materials, mount design, and assembly time. Remember it's not just a strip -- the strip needs a mount, and the wiring needs conversion to molex.

Let me know what you guys think about my questions 1 & 2 above, and/or drop a note here to start forming a waitlist if you want it!

My daughter and I have a tournament on Saturday so I'll rework the mount on Sunday to accommodate the strip light. I'll also get some of the other colors on order so I can see how they look.

nice work and a great solution

#3 1 year ago

Great idea but all comes down to cost as a thick bit of frosted plastic does a good job of diffusing those single LED boards, I’ve done it on a few of my games where the insert is poorly lit.

However this would be my preferred solution price depending as you can’t beat more LEDs

#4 1 year ago

I noticed this too, was pretty disappointed in how well it's lit. I'd be interested in this.

#5 1 year ago

For some reason I am interested in Teal to match the LE side art and the Bond, James Bond Mode.

#6 1 year ago

Good idea and I'd be interested. I don't mind the white if more simple but color rotating looks cool.

Same here, I like to keep things somewhat stock, but if this is plug and play and reversible then count me in.

I'd be interested in purchasing a fix. Color options would be cool.

Thanks!

#9 1 year ago

I too would be interested. I personally think white looks best...

#10 1 year ago

Nice work Andy. I would be interested also in a teal to blend in with my LE.

#11 1 year ago

Thanks for all your work on this. I'd be interested. Have an LE. Plain white, teal, red, rotating... all good. Whatever is easy and keeps cost reasonable.

Awesome idea Andy! I'm super down for your Mod! If you start selling it please add me to your list! Kudos to you my friend!

Following this thread now - Depending on price and ease of installation, I’d be interested. White seems fine but color to standout could be interesting.

#14 1 year ago

I’d buy one

#15 1 year ago

Yes, interested. White works for me if the rotating RGB isn't easily accomplished.

#16 1 year ago

I would take one as well.
A warm white or cool white would be great.

#17 1 year ago

Thanks for all the interest! Yeah it'll be super easy to install -- 1 screw and a molex connector disconnect/reconnect and will be 100% reversible. Color changing won't work but specific colors can. More updates later tonight/tomorrow, heading out for tournament.

#18 1 year ago

Btw the purple idea for Diamond are Forever sounds cool. Can you share a photo with that color my friend?

I'd buy this if you made it available, thanks!

#20 1 year ago

I ordered each of the colors Comet carries, as I only have red & amber on hand. I'll redesign the mount tomorrow, and then will post pics with each color option once I have them in hand. Thanks for the positive feedback, stay tuned!

#21 1 year ago

Oooooh I just thought of one other setup I'm really excited to try:

Comet also makes "Fire" and "Blue Fire" bulbs, which I've used in various applications, but I thought they were only available as actual wedge & bayonet style bulbs. I just realized Comet also sells them in a flat style too (intended to go under clear posts). Since those are more 'rapid' blinking while they're on, it might give it a cool twinkling 'sparkling diamond' effect.

I've got these on order too. I have a few in my stash (just plain cool white, not fire) so I can at least get started on the mount for testing.

#22 1 year ago

Cool. Look forward to your findings.

#23 1 year ago

count me in, turquoise looks pretty cool...

#24 1 year ago

Super pumped, you guys. My updated mount design works perfectly -- super easy installation, and brightly & evenly lights up the insert. I ran this test with the cool white lights I had on hand.

pasted_image (resized).pngpasted_image (resized).png

So what's next? Again, my intent was to make this flashier than just white -- so I'm still waiting for the fire versions to arrive (both red and blue varieties). USPS teased me and said they were arriving today (Wednesday), but they didn't ... now it says Thursday, so fingers crossed I can have this finalized tomorrow night. I want to verify there's no issue with using the fire versions and then will post some videos. At that point we can see if there's an overwhelming preference for that version or solid colors, and then it'll be ready!

#25 1 year ago

Hell ya . Hopefully fire works because I’ll take a red fire one if you make a few sets

#26 1 year ago

I'm glad I waited to test with the Fire variations, because they drove me to modify the design AGAIN -- there were extra components on the back sides of the light boards, which were preventing them from fitting properly in the mount.

Here's what the finished product turned out to be:

pasted_image (resized).pngpasted_image (resized).png

Basically it consists of the custom designed 3D printed mount, two Comet star post lights installed into the mount, a two way splitter, and a custom Matrix-to-Molex connector I'm also making as part of the mod.

Adequately capturing what these look like in real life was practically impossible. Photos weren't coming out accurately AT ALL, so I took videos instead which got closer but still aren't 100% true to life. Here's a look at the various color options:

BLUE FIRE (below):

RED FIRE (below):

SOLID WHITE (below):

SOLID RED (below):

SOLID GREEN (below): (note -- more pale than it looks in this video)

SOLID PURPLE (below):

SOLID BLUE (below):

SOLID AMBER/ORANGE (below): (note -- more dim than it looks in this video, I do not not recommend so won't make this an option.)

Installation is stupidly easy, it's basically remove one screw, disconnect one plug, put mod in place, reinstall screw, reconnect plug. Here's the how-to video:

I've set it up in the shop for pre-orders -- going with pre-orders for now will help me gather data on the most desired colors so I can order the applicable ones without stocking up on colors no one wants. As such, the first batch will be a little delayed while I see what colors you guys prefer most, now that I have the videos!

As always, I agonized over pricing, since I want to keep it reasonable but want it worth the time/effort also.

Let me know via posts here (or just pre-order it!) which colors you like best.

Thanks to everyone for the support. Everyone who posted interest has been sent a PM!

I played a few games today and I'm loving this mod. The videos don't really do it justice at all. You'll love it, and whatever color option you choose, it's a VAST improvement over the half-lit stock configuration!

I just received my 007 PF Multiplier Light Corrector Mod and it looks very professional and is truly plug and play. It took me less than 15 minutes from start to finish to install the mod and the connectors and custom 3D printed LED mount are well engineered. The mod works perfectly and I am glad that I picked one up.

Happy to hear, Gord, thanks for the review.
Glad to know its as easy to install as I expected. Enjoy your fully lit insert!

Works as advertised and as usually with lighting, better in person. Nice work!

Excellent! Yeah pics & video just can't seem to capture it true to life so I'm glad to hear you agree that it's better in person!

I agree, this mod is a great improvement for an (important) area that Stern sadly skimped on. Looks great and a super easy install. It took more time to take the glass off and get the playfield up than it actually took to install. Super easy, 2 thumbs up!
