In attract mode on the alpha numeric display I got E X T R all lit as they should be but a ball are all faint. Also in attract mode I get both rows of displays showing exact garbage in each digit.
New game eprom and the machine otherwise plays fine. Could it be the U7 (74hct373) chip causing this or has anyone else had this problem

I just fixed a problem identical to this with a system 80B display board. Gottlieb system 3 display boards are different from 80B display boards. In the case of the 80B display board it was U1, the first 10939 in the series.
I would diode test each of the 7400 series chips to look for irregularities.
