Been to many museums and arcades and have even tried Gameplan but found Gottlieb to be more exciting, fun, and restorable. Looking to get serious about this hobby and begin collection with a DD.
PM if selling.

In the club here.. Picked up one in fairly decent shape DD. Probably over paid a tad and will put way more money in the machine then its worth but saving it from the dumpster for the next generation to enjoy when I'm feeding trees is priceless to me. I love the artwork which was the biggest appeal to me. Right now mine powers on and has lights but that's about all it does. I already pulled the back box and play field. Going for a full restore within reason to my knowledge(learning as I go). Going to try and keep it classic and classy but may put a little 2019 moderation and umph into it. First thing is to clean the inside box, and switch out those horrible leg brackets with some Williams style for more support. I already have one corner separation i'm going to have to address. I will post pictures later on. Although may not be many active people on this thread it will still be here for anyone restoring one down the road for historic purposes.

#103 4 years ago

So will try not to spam this thread with to many pictures and will keep it minimal if anyone is interested So machine powers on with some lights but that's about all it does. Will have to repin all the connectors but tore it down anyhow to do a restoration. Started to paint the inside cabinet a lighter color and help protect that old MDF wood. Went with a almond color as that will go decent with the gold powder coat I'm doing on everything metal. Yeah a lot of the parts are in the cab but powder coating them will keep them fresh and not corrode in the future. Using enamel for inside the box due to its one coat and hardness. That old wood is sucking up the paint though so will for sure take a few coats. Also the enamel will help get rid of the musty smell. This machine smells like its been in my grandmas basement for 50 years lol. Powder coated the backbox brackets with sun gold, just to test out the color and I like it. So all metal will end up being that color. I realize my changes may not be for everyone but at least I'm saving the machine regardless The translate with the machine is pretty much in perfect condition so I got that going for me.

Looks Awesome!!

Does anyone have a photo of the inside of their cabinet? Not under the playfield, but, rather where the capacitor/bridge rectifiers and transformers are?

I picked up one of these about a year ago. I'm just getting to it today (had several other projects I've been working on).

It is in pretty decent condition. It was sitting in a basement on the ground since gottlieb went out of business. Man had bought it new, HUO from the sound of it, and he told me a switch would break every so often and they would come service it.

He said he stopped playing it and stored it when the switch broke and the company would no longer come and fix it.

I assume he had some sort of warranty through gottlieb when he bought it.

Anyway, it was sitting in a basement, had a room built basically around it and was a fun time getting it out without any keys or way in to take the head off.

Bottom is a bit corroded and musty. Diodes are all corroded as well as the power switch.

Just today wired in a new switch, turned it on, it powered on into attract mode, credited up with sound, and then errored when it tried to launch a ball and froze up.

Diving into this today and will hopefully have better news later

Side note, what's the going price for these guys?

EDIT:
So replacing the diodes at the bottom solved some issues, mainly allowing me power to the coin door and able to now use the self test.

I'm also able to start games. I can credit it up, start a game, solenoid fires but ball doesn't launch. Game makes a noise, P1 score display goes 00 and the credit and ball display go to E EE.

Getting there.

EDIT 2:
Fixed the game and it plays decently. Need some tweaking, rubbers, new balls, and a good cleaning, but all solenoids and switches working.

Just having issue with getting voice, and the credit display needs a bit of tlc but otherwise it's all done and ready for my living room

Hey guys, sorry to post on a members only thread, but I'm shopping around for a DD and found a couple leads. What's an acceptable price for a clean devil's dare? I know a couple years back when I was looking at one they were fairly cheap.

Hi Pinsiders,

joined the DD owners club last Christmas.

I always remembered the crazy plays on this pinball when I was 17.
It took me a lot of coins.

Santa was nice with me and finally brought me a nice one in good shape coming from Belgium.

I have also done great job on it :
It was an export model without speeching sound board, so I have found a speeching board and power supply,
cleaning and polishing all steel parts,
lightbox inside painting,
underwear and back black painting,
new targets decals,
new center plastic,
new door sticker,
worked on electronic fixing bumpers boards,
fixing grounds on all boards,
del everywhere,
more lights In starposts, especially on the right side which was a bit dark,
new playfield glass,
new playrules, scores and coinchute labels.

And the most important : the key ring

Now It is nearly perfect.

Reading through the Pinwiki guide on System 80s, and I'm at a spot where it's just not very complete.

I redid the PSU board, and am getting good power on the test points.

Displays 1 & 3 are lit up with just a single "0", doesn't rotate to "1", just stays at "0". Occasionally, when I boot it up, the system makes some beep-boop sounds, but after power cycling it again, no sounds. With the sound coming on (system is cold), still have "0" in the displays.

I will likely redo the MPU board, to put LEDs into it per the Wiki, to detect power levels.

I'm one cable at a time, cleaning, sanding pins and the card-edge connectors on the boards.

I'm wondering how to test the CPU, and Z7 and Z8.

I can check for a signal with the logic probe on pin 40 of the 6502 CPU, and I'll read up more from what I can find there - but sure don't know how to test Z7 and Z8.

Anyone have insight?

Excerpt from wiki:

===
8.2 Game Displays a single 0 or 1 on Displays

If an 80A game does not boot and displays just a single zero, just a single 1, or alternates between a single zero and single 1, this may indicate one or more bad IC(s) on the MPU:

CPU
Z7
Z8

The CPU itself may still output data that can be picked up with a logic probe, but still might be bad.

Hello,
I have the same problem on my DD.
Sometimes during playing, the DD freezes.
And just one 0 or 1 are heavy lighted in the displays 1 and 3 and in the credit display.
Then switch off and on, and everything is fine.
You say it is perhaps due to CPU, Z7 and Z8 failure?

#121 3 years ago

Probably not the problem, but just a friendly reminder to make sure you have between 5.0 and 5.1V at the MPU. I had some intermittent problems with my DD and that voltage was adjusted a little low. Put the voltage at 5.1 and all problems were gone.

Going through all of my left parts from various games. Came across these. If interested shoot me an offer.

I rebuilt my power supply, ran it at 5, 5.1, no change - I dug into PinWiki and am waiting for a replacement 6502 CPU as on my MPU, the IRQ (interrupt request) on pin 4 holds high when measuring with a logic probe.

I also lightly tested the 6532 RIOT (Ram, Input-Output, Timer) chips as well. They were not hot, nothing on the MPU was that I could find. I repinned connectors until my 'extraction tool' broke LOL. Cleaned boards, scrubbed card-edge connectors with sandpaper (1000 grit) and polished them up.

I need to do ALL the connectors, but need to get another extraction tool for those damned pins!

Matt08 Ok I found the issue on my DD. PSU rebuild was good, per PinWiki guide. I'm glad I didn't screw that up!

The issue for me was on the MPU board - the 6502 CPU was dead.

I used a logic probe on the 6502 (pulling 5VDC power for the logic probe from the PSU test points), and I used a 'chip clip' - over the 6502 so I could test the pins properly, pulling up a pinout of the 6502 so I knew what went where.

The IRQ (interrupt request) line on my 6502 never varied - it was high on startup, never any change. Got some really good advice from ChrisHibler on testing the 6502. Couldn't have done it without some help.

Took a gamble on a 6502, desoldered the old one from the board (low temp, engineered solder sucker, clipped all leads from 6502 so I could do it with low temp and so the 6502 would not act as a heat sink thus requiring more heat for the desoldering), heated each clipped pin up where I could and carefully tweezing them out, repairing landing pads and eyelets where needed.

Put a new socket in, and put new 6502 in.

MPU boots now! Game plays - still have work to do on the 'cave' kickouts and quite possibly the driver board transistors repsonsible for the main drop target bank and the cave kickouts, waiting on parts...

Hi all-

On my devils dare...I’ve got at least one lower slingshot that’s scoring when it shouldn’t. It’s odd though, it doesn’t do it as soon as a game starts. The erroneous scoring starts maybe halfway through ball one. The scoring starts slow, and then gets progressively faster until it’s constant

It appears that the slingshot scoring functionality is activated by of a switch installed similarly to a flipper EOS switch.

I can’t figure out what’s causing this. I appreciate your thoughts on the matter!

This game has a pascal all in 1 board, was working fine with the all in 1 board. The issue just randomly started

Thx!
Pete

Anyone know where this rogue wire belongs? I opened it up to see why the switch for the second to left drop target wasn't registering and found this. I'm guessing it's related to the switch, but can't see where it should go.

You can check on this
All wires go to A1J6
Check with the color code.
Seems that the red wire has been soldered to replace this one?

I actually got it sorted. Previous owner used the red wire to bypass a wire connecting a switch to that diode, for some reason. It wasn't related to my issue. Thanks though.

I recently picked up a Devil's Dare however it had quite a few issues with it and I have resolved them all except two things:

1) I'm not getting any of the controlled lamps working at all. I verified fuse @ F5 and tests good, also tried replacing fuse with same results. On the bare wire that runs along the underside of the playfield that is connected to the controlled lamps, I am getting anywhere from 1.9 VDC - 2.6 VDC and seems to not be consistent, but bouncing around in that range. I am going to assume is the problem, but not quite sure where to look/troubleshoot further.

2) None of the pop bumpers are working at all. I purchased a rottendog pop bumper board to eliminate any electronics on the existing 3 boards. It has a LED to verify that the board is getting power, and is not lit regardless of which of the 3 connectors I use for the bumpers. The coils for the bumpers all have 24VDC to them. I traced out the 5V line to pin 18 on the MPU board, and when not connected to the wiring harness going to the playfield has 5VDC. I then tested pin 5 of the pop bumper board and it reports about 1.5VDC when connected to any of the boards, but shows 5VDC when not connected. Maybe a short somewhere?

I have done the system 80A grounding mods, installed a new cap to replace the old orange one by the power supply and also replaced all 3 bridge rectifiers so far.

I'm a bit of a noobie when it comes to electronics repair/troubleshooting but am working to learn more

Any help/comments/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Recently got my DD project machine up running. Worked out all the issues and plays great. What a challenging machine to play. The devil is kicking my ass. For me hardest shot is the captive cave. Love the game. Anyway, is it normal for the ball to hit the glass so much? Never played game with so much ball hitting glass. Seems like every center drop target shot slams the glass, my flippers are rebuilt and I adjusted off of playfield with the thickness of a credit card ,rubbers are installed correct. Just curious if this is normal for this game.

I have not this hitting problem.
Perhaps your flippers are too low.
Try to put 2 credit cards, perhaps even 3 for thickness .
