This thread will document the build of a Cheetah from scratch. I hope to have this finished in time for Pincinnati show. We will see..
I will also be bringing this machine to the next Louisville show.
For generic parts, I have a couple Galaxy's that I can snag pieces from, along with the backbox (backboxes are same size on the widebody games).

Since Cheetah is a wide body, apron and lockdown bar can be hard to find.
I've been sitting on these for awhile now.
I had new apron decal made.

Lower cabinet made from 3/4" Baltic birch plywood. You can buy this in 5' x 5' sheets which is perfect for 1 box.

1/4" prefinished plywood for the bottom.
Angle brace is there to keep box square until glue sets up.

I love these build threads. It looks like you’re off to a great start. Can’t wait to see it all come together

#10 1 year ago

The world needs more Cheetahs. Ya'll are in for a treat at Pincinnati. Play Big Game, which is great, then play a game that's even more fun--Cheetah. I'm upset that I dragged my feet on buying a CPR playfield for my Cheetah and now have to wait for them to restock--which I thought they said was a thing of the past with their new setup.

All the same price & wait of skilscreening without the pesky quality!

Love these threads and hope to play it in Cincinnati.

I hate to be that guy but do you have the large clear center lane guide for galaxy(the scoop and spinner guide plastic)?

I’m in the middle of a galaxy and all my plastics are fine besides that one. The easy break set is out if stock at Marco. I figured I’d ask since you’re tearing them apart for parts.

Thanks and cheetah is awesome.

#15 1 year ago

Thanks, not sure, but if the part is in one of those machines, it's yours.

Yeah, I wouldn't mind one; probably the only one left i want.

Bondo applied at all plywood joints, and sanded with #80. Ready for glaze (I apply as grain filler).
I made a simple template for locating holes for leg bolts

Glaze sanded to #120, 2 coats primer/sealer applied.
I'll block sand this with #800, and lay on 3 coats of basecoat in about 1 hour.

Next color will be yellow, but since yellow has very little pigment, it doesn't cover well.
So a white base helps before applying the yellow.

I knew I'd be spraying clear today, so I stripped and painted these legs, so I could clear them at same time.

Looking awesome so far, nice work! I'm working on some Stern projects as well (not a Cheetah, but still). I'll be making several new wire harnesses to boot. If you need some wiring supplies or harnesses, feel free to holler! I'll give ya a good deal if it's something I'm set up for

#36 1 year ago

Looking great. Man you make that cabinet fabrication look easy, and I know its not.

Thanks for the thread

#37 1 year ago

Thanks. I appreciate the interest

#38 1 year ago

the wiring harnesses are universal for this era of stern?

#39 1 year ago

No. I make the pf harnesses custom after populating the pf.
The cabinet and backbox harnesses are the same.

[quoted image]

I'm thankful so many people share their process here, I learn so much from each scratch build thread I read! I did not know that those protectors were a thing until now, and I already talked to djblouw about ball guides.

On your cabinet, how did you do your mitre joints? I'm about to build a cabinet as well, and I haven't decided how I want to do those joints. I've read that routing a locking mitre joint is the standard, but my Whirlwind and my Gottlieb Rack-a-Ball both have locking rabbet joints, no mitre whatsoever. Whenever I see a photo of a cabinet corner I zoom in to see how they're joined, and I've almost never come across an actual locking mitre joint.

#48 1 year ago

No reason for locking miter when corners are glued and screwed. I use 45 degree bevels.
