I had a similar problem but in a different machine with a center stand-up target. It turned out that I had installed a far stronger flipper coil on one side, so the ball would hit the target with too much power that it flew off the target (like a ball swing). If you have the right coil, try adjusting your EOS switch so that the flipper bat hits with less strength (but be carefull that it can produce enough velocity for the ball to make the ramps)

I assumed it was designed to softly kick out. If the ball gets kicked back hard into the STAR area every time it would get stuck up there. Achieving the Love Gun MB would be too easy. Mine occasionally kicks out hard enough for me to nudge it around and keep it up in that area. Usually it arcs down and out of that area back into the main PF area as I'm sure it was designed to do - otherwise Stern could easily shoot the ball at a higher velocity.

How does the garage ramp work? Ball goes into the ramp and then an up-kick sends it to the second playfield? The garage ramp is actually a jump ramp. The ball goes up the ramp and, assuming it has enough velocity, sails over the orbit and lands on a second ramp which takes it to the VUK at the back left of the playfield. If the ball isn't hit solid enough, it will fall into the orbit and then slowly roll back down towards the pop bumpers.

Force applied to the ball in a direction away from the playfield. Examples: a drop target that leans way back. A solid hit and the forward velocity of the ball hits the target and changes direction to upwards, smacking the glass. A ramp transition that has a bump in it. Ball hits bump, goes airborne. A post that isn't vertical anymore. Less likely to go airborne but still possible. Any bump on the playfield. Raised insert?

Posted over 9 years ago by Tmezel – in Pinball mods/toppers market ‐ Last reply over 8 years ago

I just hope the barn mod has a plastic skid plate on the bottom or the LEDs inside will get destroyed by the flying balls hitting there. I have put a ball through that area by hand (many times) with a very fast velocity and it does not hit the barn. The barn sits directly over the dip and does not get hit by the ball. During play testing it was in front of the dip and definitely got hit, so I moved it back a screw.

The balls don't fly off at the enterence, they fly off at the hump on the left side. It is mounted in the perfect spot in the video. Interesting. I thought it would be at the entrance, with the velocity of the ball we'd have lift off! Definitely in for this mod if it prevents ramp air balls. Please update us QG or mezel :)

You have got to have the the curvy ramps to slow the ball so it doesn't blow out the end of the ramps especially with a long straight down run. Using criss-cross ramps does the same thing taking away ball velocity so that at the end it doesn't cause great harm to the ramp ends. Sometimes an end of ramp foam bumper is still required to save the ramp and reduce the ball drop power that will drill a playfield hole.

Honestly these new ramps were a guess on how to fix the real issue. I've had both ramp versions, and they both will work reliable if set up correct. The REAL issue here is that the ball JUMPS off the ramp slightly (and loses velocity) from the transition off the wood to the ramp. If you smooth this out (by bending out the ramp jump) or adjusting the height of the entrance to the ramp, your balls will make it every time... and get up there fast.

You can also adjust the height of the drop target with that bottom screw. You want it just flush with the top of the playfield when down. Too high or low will cause the ball to bounce back sometimes. Also clean your spiral wire ramp so the ball maintains max velocity on launch.

Bent the little exit metal to make the ball drop center (so I could get it down that first left lane), then had the bright idea that if I pulled it forward a little more, it would give the ball more time to get to the left side on a tilt. Interesting. It's definitely not possible on mine, and it sounds like it's not possible on other people's machines as well. I wonder if there is something wrong with our crossbow mechs. When the ball is sitting in the crossbow, is it supposed to be resting on the plunger? On my game, there is a half inch gap. I would definitely try to fix that 1/2 gap between the ball and plunger. That can definitely have an impact on how much velocity the ball has when hit by the plunger.
