Varkon up for auction in Orange County, California Post #72 in topic

I had a beautiful Varkon years ago. Was interesting to play for a few games but got boring very quickly. Sold it at one of the very first Allentown pinball shows, way back when it was in the parking lot at the firehouse, for around $300 or $400 or so. I don't clearly remember but it wasn't much. No great loss, but obviously I wish I still had it so I could sell it again for 12k!!

I would absolutely throw some $ at that Varkon if I was sure I could get it home in one piece. I guess they'll pallet it and hand it off to beltman, so there is that option. Eeek I got a buddy here with a van who just retrieved and tore up a Chucky Cheese game to get all the Whitestar boards and disposed of the rest properly, but no where to store the Varkon. I think.

We both know it will go for way more than that. I should have bought on at an similar auction years ago when one did go for slightly >$1000. Actually more curious as to the condition of the Time Fantasy up for auction (no photos posted yet) As Time Fantasy is a much better game, whereas the novelty of the VARKON wears off quickly.

your years ago must actually be decades ago. years ago it was still a 40k game. I owned one also till about 3 years ago I sold the Krull game after I bought Big Bang Bar. It was around 2007-2009 when I sold the Krull for $5k. Pricing was much different before 2013. I paid $4500 for a new in the box BBB in 2006-2007. Stern started the pro/premium/LE pricing level around ACDC timeframe. My LOTR was around $3100-3200. My Varkon was $700 and my original Capcom Kingpin was $5K. Times were different.

thank you, i would love to play varkon. maybe someday.. making such a game sure would be fun. those machines that i saw, it was very hard to get a feeling how long the playfield is, very hard to see inside. i guess that would create a limit of what is possible with such a machine, you'll nee a certain angle and then the machine shouldn't be too wide. and varkon has solved that with its gameplay in a really cool way. would love to see you make such a project :-)

This project is looking great so far, I'm a big fan of anything outside of standard game dimensions! It's interesting you bring up the shaker ball games and Varkon. I got to play a Varkon for the first time recently, and I was surprised how good it was. The vertical effect was a lot more effective than I would have thought, and changed how I experienced the game significantly. I've been thinking about making a mirror/"vertical" game myself since, there's a lot of design space in that format I think.

I own a Vulcan in pretty good shape. Paid less than $1,000 and wouldn’t dream of getting anything over $1200 and even that seems greedy on my end. It’s a well balanced game for the era still plan to keep it. Based on condition and auction prices it’s already worth more than what I once paid for a CV. [edit]: Oops, misread that are varkon.

Varkon is the most boring "pinball" I've ever played in my life. I didn't even bother finishing ... money. If you think it's engaging, in the slightest, I boo your bad taste in games! Varkon was made to for the footprint of an arcade/video game. Yes the smaller playfield ... less to offer. The few survived ended up with museums of serious collectors. I have play Varkon at the Ann Arbor Pinball Museum several times.

I'm bracing for the impending "boos!" from this comment... Varkon is the most boring "pinball" I've ever played in my life. I didn't even bother finishing my one game I've ever put on it. What a dog. If you want to own it because it's a rare conversation piece okay, your money. If you think it's engaging, in the slightest, I boo your bad taste in games!

Varkon Playfield scan? Post #1 in topic

Posted over 3 years ago by chad – in All Pinball ‐ Last reply over 3 years ago

Been kicking around the thought of building a Varkon pinball game. Cabinet repro available, as well as control panel, marquee , and overlay. The big hurdle obviously is the playfield, inserts , and routing , also the metal ball guides. I have tranformer panerls, doors , wire can be purchased. With all the home brew games and extra original games e.g. The Addams Family being built shows it not impossible. Anyone else had the Varkon itch?
