I watched The Wraith (1986) last night on TV and noticed a pin in the gangs chop shop. The Wraith came in with a shotgun and blasted everything, including the pin! Sacrilege! The backglass shattered then the pin collapsed in a heap. I paused it and studied it. Not real clear but I thought it was a "guard" pin of some sort, so I checked IPDB and sure enough, it was either an "Elite Guard", "Royal Guard" or "Palace Guard" (1968 Gottlieb) that was destroyed.

Not if you do a full restoration - then an original pf looks out of place I did a pretty full restoration of a Royal Guard. Complete cab repaint, new backglass, new legs etc. The original playfield was pretty nice and just needed some touchups and a good cleaning. I don't think the original playfield looks out of place at all in the game. Then again I restored the game so it would look nice and be a good player, not to be judged in someone's concours dick measuring contest.

If the Last Ball in Play socket is wired with a 35ohm sand resistor, you actually *have* to put a flasher in there. (Cross Town is this way.) A 44 (or 47) will burn up too quickly otherwise. i'll have to look, i don't know... now that you bring that up though, that WAS the bulb that i was fixing to change on the royal guard when i went down the rabbit hole (theres a 47 in it now)... and that wasn't the first time it had blown...

Gottlieb used two different sizes of snowshoes (thicknesses, more accurately). The older style ones are thinner than the newer ones. PBR has the thicker, newer style ones. The older style thinner ones are unobtanium. Royal Guard probably used the newer, thicker ones, but I'm not sure offhand.

So far, this thread has led me to 10 pinball machine purchases (2 deals) a Sunshine from Chicago and spin and flip a card deal in Maryland that blew up into a 9 pin transaction. Anyone else have a tally? This thread and pm messages from great pinsiders have led me to four cool EM machines and one that got away. ElDorado got away, but I made a great three for one trade! I ended up with captain fantastic, abra ca dabra, and royal guard! Great thread o-din! Thanks to all who participate too!

If anyone is interested, here's a link to my restoration of my Royal Guard. https://picasaweb.google.com/108573906215038680889/RoyalGuardRestoration?authkey=Gv1sRgCJf9x9iqmdGIag I had to reglue the cabinet, replace the bottom panel, and fill a ton of holes. The cab had come unglued and had a ton of screws holding it all together. Well worth it, fun game to play.

When I restored my Royal Guard, I polished every single one of those "brass" brackets and every other part on the game. Bumpers, snap targets, you name it, I did it. I'm not entirely sure why, since nobody ever sees it, but I did it. I also replaced just about every screw in the game. Not factory, I went from slot to Phillips, but much easier to work with. This is how a restoration becomes a 6 month project. But in the end, it was worth it.

That's not the correct lightbox for "Royal Guard". I'd like to see the side art. From the front, it's like a "Kings&Queens" box, or possibly "Mini Pool"/ "Target Pool".

ABCDE - extra ball. No need to get C last. Also, the outlanes and center drain are also ABCDE from left to right. Either set of 4 snap targets hit - extra ball and reset. The fan targets just score 50 points. Get a good game going and you can roll it over rather easily. I don't know that I've ever rolled over a Royal Guard.

I love Palace Guard. Royal Guard, not so much. The add-a-ball rules make it a better playing game (in my opinion).

I had a Royal Guard for a little while this Winter. Having no room for it I never planned to keep it. After shopping it out I was surprised at what a fun and challenging game it was. It has a nice art package but I think the theme keeps this one under the radar. As hard as it was to earn a special on it, I would think Palace Guard would be that much better a game. Seems deserving to me.
