I hear those CD drives go bad after a while. There's a guy or two that repair them...or you can replace with an old/refurbished one. I removed the cartridge, reinserted the CDs and did a service reset of the player. Seems to be working fine now. It may have been sitting unused for a while, so it may just need to be worked a little. Fingers crossed.

I know this is old tech, but we have a CD that is starting to skip and get stuck in our CD player. It's a five CD player and the skipping/sticking also happens with other CDs. We tried the CD in our old boom box and it skips too. Could the player have damaged the CD or the CD damaged the player?

I used to think CDs and DVDs had good longevity until after about 10 years so or I started having issues with some discs becoming unreadable due to rot. I do have some BD-Rs though and I haven't been able to test those for longevity yet. I think my strategy will end up being DVDs or Blu-rays and VHS/LTO tapes as a second level backup. I don't trust hard drives as much as I used to. I see drives with 5 years of age or less develop bad sectors on the surface of the platters.

Plus I grew up on CDs (my first album was a CD in 1992). BTW I love this community; I put something a bit left-field from pinball but still gameroom related, and I get instant feedback from people also in the same boat. Awesome.

It really was a terrible medium. I appreciate it's importance, but I have no intention of ever revisiting it. I much preferred them to CDs. Obviously not pre-recorded stuff. Or at least 95% of it...but if you had quality gear, you weren't missing much. Always been a Taper, though. Always had at least a great recording deck and a real nice playback unit. I have shows that are 30+ years old that still sound great.

(and then he ended up taking half the box) I've also dropped a few boxes of CDs at Goodwill I know will never sell; somebody is probably finding things on the shelf there ... that has them scratching their head. In the process, I've found a number of CDs with disc rot. Some will still play but it's evident they won't for much longer.

Nah, keep your compact discs. I really struggle trying to justify buying an album of something I have on CD. And I have about 1000 CDs. Cassettes =Trash. But CDs are worth keeping. I don’t buy CDs anymore but still a viable format. Plus you can’t sell them for anything

I almost listened to that the other day but as I was flicking through my collection to find it I got distracted by a Gary Numan album I hadn’t listened to for ages. Must give Dummy a listen next week. The Theremin is beautiful throughout that album. Nothing wrong with getting distracted by Gary Numan. I need to get some on vinyl....why did I buy all those CDs? Speaking of CDs have any you guys sold your CD collection? I have over 2000 and would love to dump them and use the proceeds for more vinyl.

It's all of a piece with the return of vinyl (out-selling CDs), artisinal everything (beer, booze, food), americana music, etc. People are yearning for something more visceral, more tangible, less disposable. It's almost like every micro-brewery needs a game or two in the corner to provide that little bit of extra ambience. Time will tell if it's just a fad. But nice to see while it lasts.

Yes, Dave Weckl is really good. I just hold it against him that he had the much older Steve Gadd as a guest musician on one of his CDs and "so you could tell their drumming apart" had Gadd play using brushes while Weckl used sticks. Great drummer but a dick move. Of course, Gadd can make anything sound good, like when he played "boxes" on a cut of the first Rickie Lee Jones CD.
