What pin do you regret buying? Post #105 in topic

Posted today by cait001 – in All Pinball ‐ Last reply today

EM games where the drops don't reset during the ball. Like Out Of Sight, Target Alpha, etc. You have to make them brutally difficult and steep because if you knock all the targets down you've got little else to shoot for. A game that did it well is Royal Flush / Card Whiz, where all the drops down reveals a target behind them that gives big points AND is risky.

Gottlieb Card Whiz Gate not staying open Post #1 in topic

Posted 18 days ago by gjm – in EM Pinball Tech ‐ Last reply 18 days ago

I have a Gottlieb Card Whiz that if not for the "ball gate" issue, the pin operates 100%. Trough, runway and EX switches are cleaned and gaped properly. Resistance at the coil reads 15. When the ball rolls over the lane guide on the right hand side, the gate opens as it should but then immediately closes so the coil is not staying energized. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Fast Draw turned out to be my all-time grail pin, but when I got it 30+ years ago I didn't know it yet. :) I know it's unlikely I'll ever find an EM I never get tired of playing all day long like FD but I could go for a Joker Poker or Royal Flush/Card Whiz. Or find another Flip A Card or Jacks Open to replace the ones I sold like an idiot. I don't like to think too much about the great ones I let go. The ones where you say "I'm never gonna sell this pin!" but somehow or other you did.

Gottlieb Card Whiz double bonus issue Post #1 in topic

Posted 49 days ago by gjm – in EM Pinball Tech ‐ Last reply 49 days ago

Recently picked up a working Card Whiz which is set on 3 ball. Everything works and scores properly but when ball 2 gets ejected into the shooter lane the "double bonus" light comes on and when the ball drains it scores double points and stays on for the final ball which is normal. When starting a new game the light stays off for the 1st ball. Everything by eye looks good with the "I" and "KY" relays. Thanks for any advice that can help.

I also found a switch that didn't go through the plastic latch correctly on the first ball (U) relay. Those have been corrected.

It looks like Royal Flush is consistently close to the top of you lists. What it it that brings you back to this game? I have Card Whiz, the two player version. It looks simple but it is not. Build the poker hands to maximize your bonus. Playfield is nothing to look at, but the backglass is very nice.

I also just picked up a Card Whiz. Everything works on it except the bonus count. There is a KX? relay on the bottom of the playfield with a sort of stepper mechanism. It’s having a hard time because the white gear in the center looks worn out. Are these available for sale?

Card Whiz: Correct Position of the 2C Switch Dog? Post #3 in topic

Posted 14 months ago by MarkG – in EM Pinball Tech ‐ Last reply 14 months ago

Curious, #card-whiz doesn't have the switch dog info. I wonder why. [att=4905488,1548613 caption=""] Otherwise they appear to be very similar even though #royal-flush-gottlieb has a few more switches. For those who aren't familiar, the numbers in the boxes represent the number and types of switches at each position around the score motor. 'A' switches are normally open. 'B' switches are normally closed. So in position 4B for example both games have (1A, 1B) 1 normally open and 1 normally closed switch.

This is from the #royal-flush-gottlieb schematic: [att=4905387,1548554 caption=""] The #card-whiz schematic probably has the same table but I'd double check. Now I'm curious. What's up with the switches in positions/columns B and D? Do they use a non-adjustable switch dog? /Mark

Card Whiz: Correct Position of the 2C Switch Dog? Post #1 in topic

Posted 14 months ago by BleacherBum – in EM Pinball Tech ‐ Last reply 14 months ago

Would a Card Whiz owner please confirm the correct position (S or L) for the switch dog at 2C? I cannot find this information on the schematics or the manual. Mine is currently at the S position. I am having what appears to be a timing issues. The previous owner did mention he had worked on the motor. Thanks, Phil P.S. If it is not too much trouble, while your at it would you also share the Switch Dog S or L position at 1C,1A, and 4C. Much appreciated!

#royal-flush-gottlieb/#card-whiz are similar to #quick-draw/#fast-draw I imagine: [att=4902006,1546762 caption=""] The white flash in front of the magician comes on with the Game Over and match lights and was probably intended by the designer. The other two were probably added for fun.
